JACOB KAISER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
SORAPER FOR PRINTING-ROLLERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 17, 1916.
Application filed January 21, 1916. Serial No. 73,451.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB Karsnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scrapers for Printing-Rollers; and I do hereby declare the following t'o'be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to scrapers and more particularly to a detachable type which may be inserted in a press to contact with the periphery of any one of the set of.distributing rollers.
It has for an object to provide a simplified form of scraper which collects the ink from the distributing roller and through its contact with the inking roller, the ink from the inking roller, and to deliver the collected ink to any suitable receptacle.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a scraper to coact with a cleaning liquid such as an oil for removing ink from the surface of printing rollers.
Further objects will be apparent from the.
following specification, appended claims and drawings in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of parts of a printing press showing the scraper applied thereto, Fig. 2 is an end elevation of a scraper contacting with a distributing roller, Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the scraper, Fig. 4 is a plan view of one end of the supporting means of the scraper, and Fig. 5 is.
a front elevation of the scraper.
This device will be made in different sizes to satisfy the requirements for different sized presses,-but in each instance the principle will remain the same in having a strip of flexible material bent to form an angular extension which may be sharpened to present a scraping surface. This strip of metal has its lower edge rolled to form a gutter to direct the ink and oil collected by the scraping edge to any desired receptacle and this strip of metal is supported by a bar which may be detachably carried by parts of a printing press as well as having said bar mounted upon trunnions to permit the contact of the scraping edge to be varied as desired with the surface of the distributing roller. 7
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a frame 10 having the inking rollers 11 journaled therein, and having the distributing rollers 12 contacting with said inking roller. One of the rollers 12 of each set has its periphery disposed to contact with a scraper comprising a strip of flexible and resilient metal bent to form a body portion 13 from which an extension 14: is formed and this extension has its edge sharpened as at 15 to present a scraping edge. The lower edge of this sheet of metal or other desired material'is rolled as at 16 to form a'gutter and this gutter is inclined from 'one edge of the scraper to the other to permit the lower end of said gutter to discharge the ink and oil into any desired receptacle.
The scraper is carried by a bar 17 which runs across the back of the scraper at any .desired elevation and this bar extends slightly beyond the edges of the scraper. The extensions of said bar receive fittings l8 and these fittings comprise hooks 19 for engagement over trunnions 20 which may be secured to the frame of the press. The fittings 18 may be screwed or otherwise secured to the bar 17 as at 22.v One fitting 18 also has a trunnion 23 formed thereon about which a band 24 carried by a handle 25 fits. The handle 25 may be slotted as at 26 and also provided with a screw 27 to permit said handle being adjustable on the trunnion 23. This is necessary because the scraper will not always be positioned in the vertical line as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing, but may have to be inclined to meet the several requirements. The handle 25 enables an operator to impart the desired frictional contact between the scraping edge 15 and the roller 12.
When it is desired to clean the inking rollers of a press, the scraper will be inserted in the frame and mounted upon the trunnions 20, after which the press may be run as in ordinary usage and a cleaning oil commonly used by printers added to the inking rollers. After the press has been run for a while, the distributing roller 12 with which the scraper 13 contacts will collect all the ink and deliverthe same to the gutter 16 from where it will be discharged to the desired receptacle.
It is thought that the operation of this device will be clear to those skilled in the art and that it is applicable to almost any type of press, as well as being capable of many modifications without departing from the general spirit of construction and usage.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for Having thus described this invention, I claim 1. A scraper of the class described comprising a strip of material, one edge of said strip of material being bent to form a lateral extension, the extreme edge of said extension being sharpened, the opposite edge of said strip of material being diagonally rolled to form an inclined gutter, a supporting bar for said scraper, trunnions to support said supporting bar and a handle carried by said supporting bar to control the frictional contact, of said scraping edge With a moving surface.
2. A scraper of the class described comprising a strip of resilient material, a lateral extension formed therefrom, a scraping edge formed on said extension, the lower edge of said strip of material being rolled diagonally to form aninclined gutter, a supporting bar for said strip of material, fittings secured to said supporting bar, said fittings having hooks extending therefrom to engage trunnions carried by a printing press, a trunnion carried by one of said fittings and a handle adjustably carried by the trunnion on said fitting.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
JACOB KAISER.
