vAREs, citizens of the United States, residing at Willows, in the county of Glenn and State of California, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Paper Carriers and Printers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for supporting rolls of wrapping paper in position for withdrawal by salesmen and for imprinting upon the paper as it is withdrawn advertisements or other matter.
The invention seeks to provide a device for the stated purpose which will be composed of few parts arranged in a very com pact manner and by means of which the paper will be presented smoothly to the action of the printing roller and may be positively held in position to be easily grasped by the user.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings and will be hereinafter first fully described, the novel features being subsequently particularly pointed out in the claims following the description.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a bottomrplan view of an apparatus embodying the present invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section.
The supporting frame 1 may be of any desired or preferred construction and will preferably be in the form of a rectangular boX or casing. In one end of this boX or casing is a horizontal slot 2 and'upon the outer side of the boX, immediately adjacent the said slot, is a knife 3 by which the paper may be severed when a portion of the same has been withdrawn from the bOX. At the opposite end of the boX or casing, we mount the paper-carrying roll 4 and a series of these rolls may be provided so as to carry a supply of paper of dierent widths. Between the paperparrying rolls and the slotted end of the boX, is a table 2a upon which the paper rests. Around the trunnions or journals 5 of rolls 4, we coil springs 6 havingl their opposite ends secured to the rolls and the boX, respectively, as shown at 7 and 8, whereby the roll will be normally held in a position in which the paper will be wound thereon and, consequently, as the paper is withdrawn, the tension of the springs will be increased and the paper, therefore, held taut so as to present a smooth surface to the actlonof the prlnting roller. The printing roller 1s shown at 9 and is preferably a substantial solid roller mounted in any con- Q venient manner within the boX so as to rotate freely and provided upon its circumferent'lal surface with longitudinal, grooves in whlch may befitted type faces, as shown at 10. The type faces may, of course, be of any desired character and arranged to form any preferred announcement. The longitudinal grooves will preferably be T-shaped in cross section and liners 11 may be inserted in the side portions of the grooves soV as to bear upon the type faces and lock the same firmly 1n position in the grooves. By providing a plurality of liners of different widths, theY user will be enabled to compensate for wear upon the type blocksl or the walls of the grooves in which they are mounted.` Adjacent the printing -roller 9 is a presser roller or platen 12 which is journaled in the side walls of the boXA 1 in any convenient manner'and is covered with rubber or similar material, as indicated at 13, so as to present a smooth firm, but not hard, surface to the paper so that the desired pressure may be had upon the type faces without liability of the same cutting through the paper.
The paper, indicated at 14, is mounted in a web upon the roll 4 and is then carried over the printing roller and under the presser roller or platen and then out through the slot 2 in the boX, as shown clearly in Fig. 2, and as will be understood. Within the boX, adjacent the slotted end thereof, are guides or supports 15 through which eX- tend arms 16 which project through the slot 2 and are joined in a frame 17 eXteriorly to the boX, as shown and as will be readily understood. The. said frame 17 is provided with a central projection or spur 18 to which at opposite sides thereof, are pivoted angl'e levers 19. The inner ends of the arms 16 are turned laterally inwardly so as to Y upperl ends of the jaws 23 which are pivoted upon the arms 16 and are bent laterally inwardly so as to coact-with the jaws 20 andV grip the paper 14.
The paper may be carried over the printing roller and between the same and the platten and thence out through the slot 2. The operator presses the free ends of the angle levers 19 toward the projection 1S and thereby exerts a pull upon the wires 21 which causes the jaws 22 to swing toward the jaws 2O and thereby grasp the paper. An outward pull is then exerted upon the frame 17 so that the arms 16 will move longitudinally through the supports 15 and thereby draw from the box the desired length vof paper which may be severed by merely twisting it across the edge of the knife 3. The grippingjaws will then be returned to the initial position by sliding the arms 16 and frame 17 longitudinally in the box, as will be readily understood. As the paper is withdrawn, it will, of course, be carried over the printing roller in contact with the type faces thereon and the pressure exerted upon the said face by the platen will cause an imprint to be made upon the paper. After the required quantity of paper has been Withdrawn and severed, the nippers are released whereupon the jaws thereof will separate and the spring 24 secured to the frame 17 and the box, will return the nippersy to initial position. The spring 6 will also retract and rewind the paper, the tension of `this spring being so adjusted that its retracting force will be spent just before the end of the paper reaches the platen 12 so that said end will be left on the table 2e with its edges between the jaws of the nippers.
The several working parts of our apparatus are all inclosed so that they are protected from injury from passing objects and, at the same time, will keep the paper clean.
" The gripping jaws enable the user to withdraw the paper positively and quickly without requiring preliminary pushing upon the roll of paper so as to project the paper a sufficient `distance beyond the knife to permit the edge of the paper to be grasped,
and the type faces may be readily changed or removed owing to the described construction of the printing roller.
I-Iaving 4thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:l
1. The combination of a casing, a printing roller mounted therein, a platen rotatably mounted adjacent the said printing roller, a paper carrying roll mounted within the casing, means for withdrawing the paperfrom the said roll over the printing roller and out of the casing, and a tension spring acting upon the printing roller in opposition to the ysaid paper withdrawing means. j
2. In a device for the purpose set forth, the combination of a casing, a paper carrying roll mounted therein, arms slidably mounted within the casing and projecting through one end thereof and provided at their inner ends with jaws adapted to bear upon the paper, coacting jaws pivoted upon said arms, a connection between said arms externalto the casing, levers mounted upon said connection, and flexible devices extending between said levers and the pivoted jaws.
