Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 10, 1916.
Application filed October 18, 1913. Serial No. 795,864.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRITZ L. ANDREN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Table-Beds, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates particularly to a combination table and bed; and the primary object of the invention is to provide an improved structure of simple form.
The invention is illustrated in its preferred embodiment, in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a vertical sectional view, showing the structure in open or extended form; Fig. 2, an enlarged broken hor izontal sectional view taken as indicated at line 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a complemental view taken as indicated at line 3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a broken vertical section showing the structure closed; Fig. 5, a broken section taken as indicated at line 5 of Fig. 4; Fig. 6, a broken section taken as indicated at line 6 of Fig. 4; and Fig. 7 a broken section taken as indicated at line 7 of Fig. 4.
In the construction illustrated, A represents a table provided with a top A which may be thrown to an open position; and B, a folding-bed which is normally housed within the frame of the table beneath the top A. The table may be of any approved construction. As shown, it comprises end standards 1 connected at their rear upper portions by a rear side piece 2, the leg portions, of the frame being joined by longitudinal members 3 and cross-members 4.
The table-top A is shown equipped on its lower side with arms 5 having cam-members 6, which engage rearwardly, and upwardly inclined cam-members 7 which are secured to the inner surfaces of the end-pieces 8 of the frame. The top A may be swung to the standing position shown in Fig. 1, where it will engage the rear legs of the table and be stably supported by the arms 5.
The folding-bed B comprises a main section 9 which constitutes a head-section; a main intermediate section 10 and a main section 11, which constitutes a foot-section. The sections 9 and 10 are pivotally connected with a spacing section 13; and sections 10 and 11 are pivotally connected with a spac ing section 14.
The section 9 is suspended on pairs of links 15 and 16 which depend from pivots 17 and 18 carried by the ends of the table frame. The links 16 have upper extensions or arms 16, which, taken in connection with the links 16, afford curved levers. Section 13 is provided with the usual truss 13-; the outer portions of the bars constituting the section 10 have pivotally connected therewith legs 19 provided with upward extensions which are joined by links 20 to the spacing section 13. The spacing section 14 is provided with the usual truss 14 which is pivotally connected with the angle bars comprising said section. The arms of the foot-section 11 have pivotally connected with their outer portions legs 21 having upward extensions connected by links 22 with the spacing section 14. The legs 21 are equipped with arms 23 having locking notches 24 adapted to engage studs 25 carried by the intermediate section 10.
At the joints between the sections of the bed are provided the usual shoulders for preventing the bed from buckling when in the extended position, and for causing the sections to turn as a unit, after one section assumes a position substantially at right-angles to another section in the folding operation.
Referring to the structure in the open position, a front piece 26 for the table-frame is suspended by links 27 pivotally connected with the end standards of the frame some distance in the rear of the front legs, and by links 28 pivotally connected with the main intermediate section 10 near its junction with the spacing section 13.
In folding the structure, the section 11 is swung upwardly (see Fig. 1) until it is at right-angles to the section 14, after which the section 11 is carried to a position parallel with the section 10, the section 14 being turned upwardly to a position at rightangles to the section 10. In this operation, the legs 21 are folded and the notches 24 in the arms 23 are brought into locking engagement with the studs 25. The sections 10 and 11, thus secured in folded relation, are then swung upwardly and rearwardly as a unit until the member 10 is in vertical position, after which the section 13 turns with the section 10 until the section 13 assumes approximately a vertical position, and the section 10 assumes an approximately horizontal position. During this movement, the arms of the section 11 engage the arms 16 of the links 16, thus causing the headsection 9 to be elevated somewhat as the links 15 and 16 are caused to swing forwardly and upwardly. WVhen the bed is thus in folded condition, the table-top may be lowered to rest on the upper portion of in front of the folded bed structure, as
shown in Fig. 4. This result is accomplished by the links 28 bearing over or upon the horizontal flanges 10 of the section 10, as shown in Fig. 4.
The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding only, and no unnecessary limitation should be understood therefrom, but the appended claims should be construed as broadly as permissible, in view of the prior art.
That I regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of a table frame, links depending from the end portions thereof, a bed suspended on said links and comprising a plurality of foldably related sections, and means engaged by one of said sections in the folding operation and serving to swing said links upwardly when the bed is converted to a folded condition.
2. The combination of a table frame, pairs of links depending from the end portions thereof, one pair of said links provided with upwardly extending arms, and a bed suspended on said links and comprising a plurality of foldably related sections, one of said sections adapted to engage said arms in the folding operation and swing said links upwardly.
3, The combination of atable frame, and a folding-bed mounted thereon, comprising three main sections" and two spacing sections connecting them, and a front piece for the frame suspended beneath the inner spacing section and connected with the folding-bed structure near the junction between the in ner spacing section and the intermediate main section, whereby said front piece will be carried to an elevated vertical position in the operation of folding the bed structllI'e.
