GARMENT-FASTENER.
Application filed April 13, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, MAX SoHoDsKY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Garment-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to garment fasteners and has for its object to provide an arrangement in which the cooperating members of the fastener are capable of being connected together or detached from each other in a simple manner and with a minimum of effort and which when in cooperating engagement are firmly held against unintentional separation from each other.
A further object of my improvement is to reduce the construction thereof to the simplest form and the cost of production to a minimum.
My invention will be fully described hereinafter and the features of novelty will be pointed out in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing which illustrates examples of my improvement and in which Figure l is a vertical section of one form thereof; Fig. 2 is a plan view of one of the members; Fig. 3 is a similar view of the other member and Fig. 4 is a section similar to Fig. 1, of a slightly diiferent arrangement.
As shown in the drawings my improved fastener comprises two preferably dished members 5 and 6 adapted to be secured in any suitable manner as by sewing, to two opposed portions ofv a garment and whereby said garment portions may be detachably connected together. The member 5, which may be termed the male member is provided with a stud extending outwardly from its face and comprising a shank or stem 7 and a relatively enlarged head 8 as shown in Fig. 1. The member 6, which may be called the female member is formed in its face with a relatively wide open ended slot 9 terminating in the peripheral flange 6 of said member and communicating with a relatively narrow continuing slot 10 which in the illustrated example terminates in a closed end at a distance inwardly from the periphery of the member 6 as shown in Fig. 2. The width of the slot 9 is preferably such as to permit the head 8 to pass through the same in a direction parallel to the axis of the fas- Specification of Letters Patent.

tener while the slot 10 is preferably of relatively smaller dimensions and of such a wldth as to permit the shank or stem 7 to be readily moved into the same in a transverse direction as will be more fully explained hereinafter. The said member 6 further includes a resilient tongue 11 which is located beneath and in registry with the slots 9 and 10 and preferably extends diametrically across said member 6 as illustrated in Figs. 1 and d. This tongue 11 may be an integral element consisting of the material stamped or otherwise removed from said member 6 to form the slots 10 and 11 in which latter case the tongue would have the same general shape as said slots and at one end would form a continuation of the peripheral flange 6 and at its other end a continuation of the end face of said member 6 into which it merges as shown in Fig. 1. In this case the tongue 11 is shaped to form shoulders 12 and 13 spaced apart a distance corresponding approximately to the diameter of the head 8 and in the preferred arrangement being located an equal distance from the center of the member 6 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the shoulder 13 being preferably formed by the bend in the tongue located at the point where it merges into the end face of the member 6 and the shoulder 12 projecting slightly above the tongue if desired. The said tongue may also be stamped from the member 6 in the form shown at 11 in Fig. at in which case its inner end is completely severed from the slot 10 and extended beneath the end face of said member 6. This inner end of the tongue 11 may be permitted to remain free or it may be secured to the flange 6 by solderingor otherwise as desired. The said tongue 11 is also preferably formed with shoulders 12 and 13 corresponding to the shoulders 12 and 13 of Fig. 1. In some cases said tongue may comprise a separate element having that end which is adjacent to the entrance end of the slot 12 suitably secured to the flange 6- and its opposite or inner end either free or also suitably connected with said flange.
To operatively combine the members 5 and 6 when it is desired to connect the garment portions together, the head 8 of the stud which forms part of member 5 is introduced into the slot 9 so as to rest upon the tongue 11, after which the members 5 and 6 are moved toward each other in a direction transverse to their axes. The head 8 is in this manner caused to travel along the tongue 11 and beneath the end face of the member 6 which operation brings the shank 7 into the relatively reduced slot 10, the movement of the members 5 and 6 as described being continued until the head 8 passes beyond the shoulder 12 of said tongue 11, the tongue 11 being depressed against its tension as said head 8 passes over the shoulder 12. As soon as the shoulder 12 has been passed the tongue 11 owing to its resiliency snaps back to its normal position in which condition the head 8 is located between the shoulders 12 and 13 in the recess formed thereby and thus clamped between the tongue 11 and the end face of the member 6 with the shank T in the slot 10.
The method of connecting a member 5 with a member 6 having the tongue 11 as in Fig. 4: is exactly the same, the operation of the parts likewise being similar, with the head 8 finally seated between the shoulders 12 and 13 as will be readily apparent. Owing to the fact that the diameter of the head 8 is greater than the width of said slot 10, a separation of the members 5 and 6 by a force exerted in an axial direction is impossible, while accidental or unintentional separation of said members in a transverse direction is prevented by the shoulders 12 or'12 as will be apparent from an inspection of Figs. 1 and 4. The shoulder 13 or 13 holds the head 8 against a movement beyond the centers of said members 5 and 6 and serves to properly and effectively position said members relatively to each other. The latter shoulder 13 or 13 may in some cases be omitted or the slot 10 may terminate at a point near the center of the member 6 and so as to arrest the movement of the shank 7 when the members 5 and 6 are substantially in axial alinement with each other. The slot 1.0 extends materially beyond the center of the member 6 as shown in the drawings preferably only when the tongue 11 is stamped from the member 6 in which case the shoulder 18 or 13 or its equivalent is desirable in the arrangement; if the tongue 11 is a separate element connected with the member 6 the said slot 10 may if desired be made shorter as described above or otherwise arranged to properly arrest the inward movement of the shank 7.
To separate the members 5 and 6 it is simply necessary to exert a pressure in a direction to cause said members to move away from each other, suflicient to move the head 8 beyond the shoulder 12 or 12 and again depress the tongue 11 against its tension, this movement being continued until the said head is in registry with the slot 9 and free to be passed therethrough. If desired the slot 9 may be omitted and the slot 10 continued to the flange 6 in which case the head 8 is passed beneaththe end face of the member 6 by an immediate movement of said members 5 and 6 toward each other in a direction transverse to their axes.
It will be noted that the members 5 and 6 instead of being connected together by means of a. pressure toward each other as is usually the case with fasteners of the present type are connected together or separated from each other by a transverse sliding movement relatively to each other. This is accomplished with a minimum of effort and is more readily brought about than is possible in the heretofore known arrangements as it is unnecessary to overcome the sometimes excessive resistance offered by the male and female elements of present fasteners and owing to the fact that the stud otthe member 5 is readily brought into registry with the slot of the member 6. This is particularly true if the relatively wide slot 9 forms a part of the structure as this slot 9 serves as a means for guiding the stud of the member 5 into the slot 10 of the member 6.
The members 5 and 6 also remain in connection with each other under a maximum of strain which may be exerted thereon if the garment should fit rather tightly on the wearer and similarly do not become disengaged if the garment should happen to be a loose fit.
My improved fastener may be combined with gloves, or garments of any description and is also capable of being used in other connections so that I do not desire the term garment fastener to be taken in a restricted I00 sense. In addition to this the fastener is extremely simple in construction and consequently is cheap to manufacture.
It will further be apparent that the tongue in whatever form it is arranged may be provided with a single projection extending upwardly therefrom in registry with the axis of the member 6 and arranged to cooperate with a recess similarly located in the end face of the stud 8 to maintain the members 1,10 5 and 6 in engagement with each other. In such case one or both of the shoulders hereinbefore described may be omitted from the tongue.
Various changes in the specific construction shown and described may be made with in the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim:
1. A fastener comprising a member provided with a peripheral flange and having a slot in its end face, said slot having anenlarged portion the open end of which inter- 'rupts the periphery of said end face and an inwardly continuing reduced portion, a re-. silient tongue in registry with said slot, said tongue having its one end formed integrally with said flange and its other end extending upwardly and formed integrally with said end face, a second member, a projection 11.30
thereon adapted to enter said slot and an enlarged head on said projection adapted to be clamped between said tongue and the end face of said first member.
2. A fastener comprising a member provided with a peripheral flange and having a slot in its end face, said slot having an enlarged portion the open end of which interrupts the periphery of said end face and an inwardly continuing reduced portion, a resilient tongue having its opposite ends integrally connected with said flange and end face respectively, said tongue extending from said flange at a point between the free edge thereof and said end face in registry with said slot and then upwardly to said end face, a second member and a projection carried thereby and adapted to enter said slot and to be clamped between said tongue and the end face of said first member.
3. A fastener comprising a member providedwith a peripheral flange and having a slot in its end face the one end of which slot interrupts the periphery of said end face, a resilient tongue having its one end formed integrally with said flange and extending therefrom at a point between the free edge of said flange and said end face 7 in registry with said slot, a second member and a projection carried thereby and adapted to enter said slot and to be clamped between said tongue and the end face of said first member,
