Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing a`Vicksburg, in the county of Warren and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Liquid` cet whereby to heat liquid issuing there.

The primary object of my' invention is to provide a heater of the above class which is simple in construction, cheap to manufacture, strong, and durable and one which is easily attached and detached from a faucet.
Another object of my invention is to provide improved means for mounting the -heating elements, as well as the manner of association with the liquid conducting member.
A still further object ofmy invention is to provide means whereby to ventilate the heater while in use so as to prevent burning out of the heating elements.
Vith the above and other objects in view my invention resides preferably in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth in the specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a heater embodying the improvements of my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of my invention.
Similar reference characters indicate Asimilar parts throughout thejvarious views of the drawings. j v Y Referring more particularly to the drawings in which the preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated, I provide a casing ,1 threaded externally at its opposite extremities as indicated at 2 and 3 to receive end caps 4 and 5 respectively.
The end cap 4 is substantially frusto-conical in configuration and is provided with a i threaded aperture 6, which aperture tapers as at 7 to provide a reduced threaded portion 8 for a purpose which will hereinafter appear. A connecting member is provided which comprises a bar 9 having a projecting sleeve 10 intermediate its-length provided with an aperture 11, said projecting sleeve 10 being threaded for engagement wlththe threaded opening 6 in the cap 1. A suitable washer 12 of'rubber or the like is mounted in the aperture 11 to facilitate engagement.

A wire gauze strainer 11 is provided in the inlet aperture 11' and is retained therein by the projecting sleeve 10. The cap 4 is provided with an annular internally threaded flange 15 for engagement with the screw threaded portion 2 of' the casing 1.
On the opposite extremity of the casing 1 from that on which the cap 4 is mounted l provide a cap 5 substantially heini-spherical in contour, said cap 5 being recessed to provide an annular shoulder 17 and a flange 18, which flange 18 is threaded internally for engagement onthe threaded portion 3 of the casing 1. The cap 5 is further provided with an annular recess 19, which recess communicates with the outer surface of. the cap nozzle 25 is provided, 'externally threaded' for engagement in the threaded portion 22 Iof the opening 21, and contains a plurality of Wire gauze strainers 26.
The lheating elements of myy invention are disposed Within and longitudinally of the casing 1, said casing having a plurality of supplemental inner casings disposed therein providing annular chambers in which the4 heating elements are dlsposed. The caslngs mentioned are designated 27, 28 and 29, said casings being disposed one Within the other and -in this instance supporting a liquid conducting member and the heating lelements. It is tobe understood that While three of these casings have been shown, the
number of the same may be varied.
The containers for the heatin elements of 'my invention comprise a plura ity of tubular members 30,'being lined as at 31 with y insulating material such as asbestos, rubber or the like. 'The heating elements com rise coils of Wire of some metal having ahig resistance cotlicient, such as German silver or the like, and are designated-92. Tubular members are mounted in space relation in l the annular chambers provided by the outer casing 1 and the casing 27 and the two inner casings 28 and 29 as shown to advantage in Fig. 2. The annular chamber between the casings 27 and 28 is utilized in the present instance for the' liquid conducting member which comprises a coil 33, the convolutions of which are placed about the casing 28 as shown to advantage in Fig 1, the opposite extremities of said coil being connected to the inlet and outlet openings in any suitable manner, these extremities being designated 34land 35.
The casing 1 is lined internally with asbestos or the like as indicated at 36 for an obvious purpose, this not only serving to retain the heat within the casing 1 but preventing the outer surface of the casing itself from becoming heated during operation.
The heating elements 32 are connected in series by means of conductors 37 in this form of my invention. However, it is to be understood that the peculiar connection of the heating elements does not necessarily enter into the present invention. The terminals of the heating means are designated'39 and 40 and are mounted on an insulating lplate 41 disposed at one end of the casing 1.
A plurality of electric conductors, which are connected to some source of electric energy, are designated 42 and pass through an insulating bushing 43rdisposed in the cap 4, said conductor being connected to the binding post or terminals 39 and 40 in any ap proved way. The cap 4 is provided with a Ventilating opening 44. In order to insulate the heating elements and their containers from the end-cap 5 I provide an insulating plate 45 disposed in said cap and against which the containers 30 are adapted to engage. Suitable ventilating openings 46 are provided in the plate 45, these openings allowing air to circulate in contact with the coil 33 whereby to assist in the heating operation and quickly cool the coil when not in use. The openings 46 also allow liquid to escape through the openings 2() should there be any leak in the coil 33. The innermost casing 29 may be used as a ventilating duct or may be provided with heating members.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that a clear and comprehensive understanding of the construction, operation, and advantages of my invention may be gathered. It will be noted that in using the device it is only necessary to connect the same to the faucet and turn on the electric current. By opening the faucet, water or similar liquid will be allowed to How through the tube 33, and it will instantaneously become heated and pass out through the nozzle 25 at any temperature desired, it being, of course, understood that a controlling rheostat may be provided for increasing or decreasing the heat generated by the heating elements. Any liquid which may leak from the tube 33 will be conducted downwardly through the apertures 46 to the chamber 19 and thence through the openings 2O to the outer face of the cap 5 thereby indicating that there is a leak. Of course, it will be understood that the device may be operated even though the tube should leak, since the insulating plates 41 and 45 are secured in a water tight manner to the containers 3() and casings 1, 27, 28 and 29.
lVhile I have shown and described my invention as possessing a peculiar form and construction, it is desired that it be understood that I may make such changes in the details thereof that do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A liquid heater, including an outer casing, a plurality of concentrically arranged supplemental casings therein providing annular chambers, heating elements in the outermost and innermost of said chambers, and a coiled conduit disposed therebetween and communicating with a liquid supply.
2. A liquid heater, including an outer casing, a. plurality of concentrieally arranged supplemental casings therein providing annular chambers, heating elements in the outermost and innermost of said chambers comprising tubular members disposed longitudinallyv of the casing, and liquid conducting means between said heating chambers.
3. A liquid heater, including, in combination, an outer casing, a plurality of concentrically arranged supplemental casings therein providing annular chambers, end caps for said casing having a coiled conduit carried thereby and disposed in one of the chambers, and longitudinally arranged heating elements in certain other of the chambers inside and outside `of the conduit and in spaced relation thereto to permit ventilation.
