Description

// A. c. CUMMINS.
CHAIN CONNECTOR.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 24. I916.

ARCHIE C. CUMMINS, OF LONGMONT, COLORADO.
CHAIN-CONNECTOR.
Application filed March 24, 191 6.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARCHIE C. GUMMINS, a citizen of the Un1ted States, resldmg at Longmont, in the county of Boulder and,
State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chain-Connectors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has for its object to provide a simple and effective device primarily designed for detachably connecting the opposite ends of the side chains of anti-skidding attachments for motor vehicle wheels.
Another object is the provision of a connector embodying a novel type of guard, and means for retaining the guard in adjusted position with relation to the connecting element.
Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 represents a plan view of the improved chain connector, Fig.2 represents a longitudinal sectional view therethrough, Fig. 3 represents an enlarged detail sectional view therethrough, and Fig. 4 represents a detail sectional view on the line 4l of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 5 indicates the connecting plate of the connector, which is preferably of flat elongated formation and provided at one end with an aperture 6, receiving a pin or rivet 7 whereby the link at one end of a chain 8 is permanently attached to the plate 5. One longitudinal edge of the plate 5 adjacent the end opposite the aperture 9 is formed with a pair of spaced and substantially L-shaped recesses 9, the inner extremities of which are directed away from the aperture 6 and are of such size as to receive the link at he opposite end of the chain 8.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 3, 1916.
Serial No. 86,432.
A hollow sheet metal guard 10 is slidably mounted upon the plate 5 and is formed adj acent one end with longitudinal slots 11 receiving the rivet 7. The longitudinal edge of the guard 10 overlying the recessed edge of the plate 5 is formed with inwardly ex tending slots 12, which when. moved into registration with the parallel portions of the recesses 9 permits of the insertion or removal of the chain link 8, but, when moved in the opposite direction, to the position illustrated in Fig. 1, the portions of the guard lying adjacent the slots 12 overlie the mouth or throat of the recesses 9 and thereby prevent accidental removal of the chain link from the connector.
Intermediate the innermost recess 9 and the aperture 6 the connecting plate 5 is formed with a transverse recess 13, receiving a shank 14, carrying a pair of eccentrically arranged heads 15. The heads 15 are of circular formation and are rotatably mounted in correspondingly shaped apertures 16 formed in the opposite sides of the guard 10, and are formed with diametrical slots 17 adapted to receive the blade of a screw driver or other suitable tool, whereby the adjusting element may be rotated to effect the desired adjustment of the guard 10 with relation tothe connecting plate 5. It is further evident that the adjusting element if snugly fitted. in the guard 10 and plate 5 will effectively retain these elements in their adjusted position.
What I claim is:
1. A chain connector including a plate adapted for pivotal connection with one end of a chain and having L-shaped recesses in one longitudinal edge thereof adapted to receive the free end link of the chain, a guard element slidably receiving said plate, a shank rotatably mounted in said plate and eccentrically arranged heads carried by said shank rotatably mounted in said guard element for adjusting the latter with rela tion to said plate.
2. A chain connector including a plate adapted for pivotal connection with one end of a chain and having L-shaped recesses in one longitudinal edge thereof adapted to reel e the free end lin of said. h Said,
plate having a transverse recess therein, a guard element slidably receiving said plate and adapted to overlie the outer extremities of the L-shaped recesses to prevent removal. of the chain link therefrom, a crank rotataelement for adjusting the latter longitudinally of said plate.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
ARCHIE O. CUMMINS.
bly mounted in the last-mentioned recess, WVitnesses: and eccentrically arranged heads carried by G. W. Ross, said shank rotatably mounted in said guard E. L. OGDEN.
