SANITARY TROUGH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 3, 1916.
Application filed June 26, 1916. Serial No. 106,027.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK LESLIE TR M- PER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Winters, in the county of Yolo and State of California, have invented certain .new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Troughs, and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in feeding orwatering troughs for the use of fowls and animals, and the same is especially provided with means by which it may be kept clean and sanitary in an easy and eflicient manner.
Another object of this invention is to provide a sanitary trough of this character which is pivotally mounted between two end Supports, and which may be locked in this position, and which may be detachedand swung to a substantially inverted position whereby it may be also looked so that the trough may be thoroughly and effectively cleansed when the contents are dumped therefrom.
Still another object of this invention is to provide a sanitary trough of this character which is provided with a strap iron supporting means and which is also provided with a center brace that prevents the trough from sagging or bending in the middle when in use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple and durable in construction, ineX pensive to manufacture, and one which will be very eflicient and reliable in operation.
lVith these and numerous other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features of construction and the combina* tion and arrangement of parts which will be herein referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the trough in operative position; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same; Fig. 3 is an end elevation; Fig. l is a vertical transverse section taken on the line l1 of Fig. 1; and also showing in dotted. lines the dumping position of the trough.
In describing my invention I shall refer to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts trough therebetween as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. These end supports 1 and 2 are substantially alike in construction. The end supports are provided at their upper ends with openings 3 therethrough which are adapted to form bearlugs for the pivots of the trough in a manner to be hereinafter more fully described. The lower ends of the arms of thesupports are bent laterally as shown at 4 to form attaching feet or means for securely positioning the ends of the supports on the ground. Connecting the arms of the end supports are vertical cross straps 5 which have their opposite ends secured to the said arms as shown at 6, while their center portions 7 are twisted horizontally, that is given a quarter turn, so that they will be disposed at right angles to the said straps. These cross straps 5 are positioned a short distance from the ends of the arms and are disposed in substantially a single plane.
When the end supports 1 and 2 are in position, they are adapted to hold therebetween a substantially semi-circular trough 8 which has riveted to its opposite ends pro jecting pivots 9. These pivots 9 are adapted to be positioned through the openings 3 in the upper ends of the end supports and the trough will be consequently rotatably mounted between the supports so that the same may be swung easily to an inverted position to dump the contents therefrom. The pivots 9 are positioned substantially on a line between the opposite edges of the trough, and the ends are extended upwardly a short distance above the same to enable the pivots to be securely riveted in this position.
The trough 8 is provided intermediate its ends with a center brace 10 which comprises a substantially U-shaped inverted strap iron frame having its connected ends and adjacent portions twisted at right angles to the other portion of said frame and dished so as to conform substantially to lL-A center brace 10 are connected by avertical cross strap 12 which has its opposite ends secured thereto as shown at 13 and has its center portion twisted as shown at 14, that is given a quarter turn at right angles to the said strap.
The end supports and center brace of this device are connected by a pair of longitudinally extending straps 15 which have their opposite ends connected to the center portions7 and 14 of the cross straps 5 and 12 of'the end supports and center brace respectively, by bolts 16 as clearly shown in Figs.
1 3 and at of the drawing. Owing to the fact that the cross strap 12 of the center brace is disposed in a plane beneath the cross straps 50f the end supports, these longitudinally connected strapswill be positioned at an angle and will extend from the end supports downwardly to the center brace. These straps are removable and form additional braces that will securely hold the supports of the trough in position.
Riveted to the dished portion of the center brace 10 and to the adjacent outer surface of the trough 8 are catches which are adapted to lock the-trough 8 either in upright position or in substantially inverted position. These catches which are designated by the numerals 17 and 18 are substantially cylindrical in shape and are positioned adjacent. the opposite edges of the trough, and on the outer surface of the dished portion of thebrace, in such a manner that when the trough is in upright position, these catches will be disposed in alinement whereupon a pin 19 is adapted to be inserted therethrough to securely lock the trough in this position. 7
From the above description, it will be obvious that I have provided a sanitary trough which is preferably formed of galvanized iron which is adapted to be pivotally supported in a manner that it may be easily swung to inverted position to remove the contents therefromwhen desired. This trough 1s also provided with a center brace that prevents the same from sagglng when in use.
The'catch which is disposed on the center portion of the trough and on the center I brace thereforwill securely hold the trough in upright position as has beenabove described but when it is desired to invert the trough to thoroughly cleanse the same, the
pins 19 are removed whereupon the trough may be swung to the inverted position as shown in dotted lines in Fig. i of the drawing, and when in this position, one of the catches 17 will be disposed in alinenient with the adjacent one of the center brace, so that when the locking pin 19 is inserted there through, the trough will be held in this position. It will be obvious that when the trough is so held that its inner surface is readily accessible for thoroughly cleansing the same, and the contents may be entirely removed therefrom. After the trough has been thoroughly cleansed, the locking pin 19 is removed and the trough will imme diately swing back to its original upright position, whereupon it may be locked in the hereinbefore described manner.
From the foregoing description of the construction and operation of my improved sanitary trough, it will be obvious that I have provided a watering or feed trough which can be easily kept in an absolutely sanitary condition. This trough may be easily dumped to remove stale water or feed therefrom and when desired, the same may be thoroughly cleansed. The ends of the arms of the center brace 10 are bent laterally to provide feet 10 by which means the center brace may be supported on the floor, and secured in any desired manner.
I claim 1. A device of the class described comprising a pair of substantially U-shaped inverted strap iron end supports having their arms united by cross straps, a substantially U- shaped inverted strap iron center brace with its connected end dished to conform to the troughand having its arms connected by a cross strap, longitudinally extending straps connecting the cross straps of the supports and brace, a trough having its opposite ends mounted in said end supports and supported intermediate its ends in the dished portion of the center brace, and catches on said trough and brace whereby the trough may be locked in upright position or in substantially inverted position. r
2; A device of the class described comprising a pair of substantially U-shaped inverted strap iron end supports, vertical cross straps with horizontally twisted center portions connecting the arms of said supports, a substantially U-shaped strap iron center brace having its connected end and adjacent portions twisted at right angles thereto, the end being dished to conform to the trough, a vertical cross strap with a horizontally twisted center portion connecting thearms of said brace and disposed in a plane beneath theplane of the cross straps of the end supports, longitudinally extending straps connecting the center portions of the cross straps, a trough having pivots on its opposite ends mounted through the uppermost points of the end supports, and supported my hand in the presence of two subscribing interiniediate its ends in the dished connected Witnesses. end 0 the center brace, and detachable catches on said trough and brace whereby FRANK LESLIE TREMPER' 5 the trough may be locked in upright position Witnesses: or in substantially inverted position.
