TRIPOD-SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 9, 1915. Serial No. 54,927.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALEXANDER C. EL- PHINSTONE, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Vest Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tripod-Supports, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to supports for various uses and particularly to devices ofthe class made in the form of a tripod; and the object of the invention is to provide an improved support of this class particularly designed for use as a supplemental support for a chute of a coal wagon or other vehicle which employs a chute into which the coal or other material is shoveled and by which said material is conveyed to a distance from the vehicle; a further object being to provide a support of the class specified which may be used for various other purposes and all the parts of which are detachably connected, whereby the support may be folded or packed in a suitable space for transportation and other purposes, and quickly and easily set up for use whenever desired.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of my improved tripod support showing the parts in position for use and with part of the construction broken away; Fi 2 a transverse section on the line 22 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 a transverse section on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
In the practice of my invention, I provide a support of the class specified, comprising a tripod member a, a vertical standard I) composed of separate telescopic parts 0 and cl and a transverse head 6 connected with the standard I) and preferably detachable.
The tripod member a comprises a sleeve head a provided at the top with a plurality of pairs of ears a preferably, three in number, and between which are pivoted legs a. The sleeve head a is of predetermined length and the opposite sides thereof and a predetermined distance from the top thereof are provided with transverse slots or openings a which divide the sleeve head a into a top part and a bottom part a which is connected with the top part by oppositely arranged web members a which areforced outwardly, or extend outwardly, and which are integral with the said sleeve head, or the separate parts thereof.
The standard 6 consists of a bottom part c and a top part d,'and the bottom part c is tubular in form and the top part d may be tubular in form, or consists of a rod. The sleeve head a is provided at one side with a longitudinal slot a which extends the full length thereof, and said sleeve head is also provided in the top thereof and at one side thereof opposite, or nearly so, the slot a with a recess a, and the bottom part c of thestandard b is provided at one side there of with equally spaced lu-gs or projections 0 c and c which are preferably rectangular in cross section as is also the recess a in the top of the sleeve head M. The inner walls of the bottom part c of the standard are thickened at the top, as shown at 0 and said thickened part is provided at one side with a vertical groove 0 the upper end portion of which is beveled outwardly, as

shown at c, and the top part d of the standard is provided at one side thereof with equally spaced lugs or projections (Z (l and (Z which are also preferably rectangular in form and the top-of the bottom part c of the standard is provided opposite the groove 0 with a recess 0 to receive the lugs or projections 6Z2, (Z3 and (Z The transverse head 6 may be of any preferred form but is provided at its ends with upwardly directed members 6 and said head is also provided centrally with an en largement 6 having an aperture 0 which is angular in cross section, and the top cl of the standard is provided with an angular tenon d which passes through the aperture 6 and by means of this construction the head 0 is detachably connected with the standard, or the top part 03 thereof, but my invention is not limited to this construction.
With the above construction the bottom part 0 of the standard is movable longitudinally through and rotatable in the sleeve head a and the top part cl of the standard is also movable longitudinally through and rotatable in the bottom part c. The bottom part c of the standard 7) is provided at the top thereof with an annular bead or projection 0 which rests on the sleeve head a when the standard, or the bottom part thereof, is in its lowest position.
The distance between the lugs or projections 0 and 0 is slightly greater than the vertical dimension of the sleeve head a between the top thereof and the transverse slots or openings a in the opposite sides thereof, and the vertical dimensions of said slots or openings are slightly greater than the vertical dimensions of said lugs or projections, and when one of the lugs or projections of o 0 is resting in the recess a in the top of the sleeve head, the next lug or projection thereunder will be in one of the transverse slots or openings a in said sleeve head.
In Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawing, the parts of my improved tripod support are shown as extended and ready for use and the bottom lug or projection a is resting in the recess a", and in order to telescope the separate parts, as shown in dotted lines, the standard is slightly raised and said standard is then rotated so that the lugs or projections 0 c and 0 will pass downwardly through the vertical slot or opening a in the sleeve head, after which the top part (Z of the standard may be slightly raised and partially rotated so that the lugs or projections (Z (Z and d will pass downwardly through the groove 0 in the top of the bottom part c of the standard, after-which the cross head 6 may be detached. Of course, the cross head 6 may first be detached and the top part (Z of the standard telescoped into the bottom part 0, after which the bottom part 0 may be telescoped through the sleeve head.
In order to adjust the standard to different heights the bottom part c is first raised and slightly rotated, and then moved downwardly until'the lug or projection c enters one of the transverse slots or openings a after which said part of the standard is rotated until the lug or projection 0 will enter the recess (i and in this operation the lug or projection 0* turns in one of the transverse slots or openings (4 and the standard, or the part 0 thereof, may be moved vertically slightly with said lug or projection in one of said slots or openings, r
and this enables the lug or projection 0 to be raised out of the recess a so as to permlt 7 the standard, or the bottom part thereof, to
be rotated, and in this way the standard, or the bottom part thereof, may be adjusted vertically to any desired extent; and it will be understood that the top part- (Z of the standard may be correspondingly adjusted in the bottom part 0.
Copies of this patent maybe obtained for five cents each, by addressing the With my improvement, I provide a sup port of the class specified, the parts of which may be telescoped and packed together so that the length thereof will be approximately the length of the legs a, or the length of the transverse head 6, and the said. support will then occupy but small space and may be carried about from place to place, or shipped from point to point very conveniently in a small receptacle, if desired, and while I have shown and de scribed the preferred details of my improvement, my invention is not limited thereto, and changes therein and modifications thereof may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages. 7 7
Having fully described my invention, what I'claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A tripod support, comprising a tubular sleeve head to which the legs are pivoted, and a standard vertically movable in said head and composed of top and bottom parts, the top part being vertically movable in the bottom part, said standard being also rotatable in said head and the top part thereof being rotatable in the bottom part, means whereby the standard may be locked against vertical movement in the head when rotated, and means whereby the top part of the standard may be locked against vertical movement in the bottom part when rotated.
2. A tripod support, comprising a tubular sleeve head to which the legs are pivoted, and a standard vertically movable in said head and composed of top and bottom parts, the top part being vertically movable in the bottom part, said standard being also rotatable in said head and the top part thereof being rotatable in the bottom part, means whereby the standard may be locked against vertical movement in the head when rotated, and means whereby the top part of the standard may be locked against vertical movement in the bottom part when rotated, the top part of the standard being also provided with a detachable cross head.
