To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WALTER M. HAMMER- SLEY, citizen of the United States, residing at J effersonville, in the county of Clark and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tall-Paper- Handling Devices, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to wall paper handling devices, and more particularly to a device of this character to which the paper may be readily attached and detached to permit of the hanging of the same on a wall.

The primary object of my invention is to provide a device of the above character which is simple in construction, cheap to manufacture, strong and durable and effective in operation.

Another object of my invention is to provide a wall paper handling device which may be used for hanging a. strip of paper in position on a wall, means being provided for retaining the paper during the hanging operation and for releasing the paper after the same has been placed in the proper position.

A further object of my invention is to provide a wall paper handling device which, with a slight modification, may be used for hanging paper on a ceiling or for placing the border in position.

With the above and other objects in view my invention resides preferably in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth in the specification and illustrated in the accompanylng drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevational view of one form of my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary enlarged elevational view of one of the gage members. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line H of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a side elevational view of a modified form of my invention. Fig. 6 is a top plan view of the same, partly broken away. Fig. 7 is a front side elevational view of a further modified form of my invention.

Similar reference characters indicate similar parts throughout the various views of the drawings.

In Fig. 1 one form of my invention is shown, this form being particularly adapted for usein hanging wall paper on the walls of a room, and comprises a carrying frame 1 substantially rectangular in cross section and preferably formed of tubular metal in order that the same may be light in construction. The frame 1 is provided with a lateral portion 2 into which a supporting arm 3 is re ceivable as indicated to advantage in Fig. 2 at the point 4. The arm 3 is formed in two sections, the lower section designated 5 serving as a handle portion, sections 3 and 5 adjustment in length.

I provide means on the frame 1 for gripping and holding one marginal edge of a sheet of wall paper indicated in dotted lines and designated 7. This clamping means comprises a strip 8 having a tongue 9 of resilient material extending laterally therefrom and substantially at right angles there to. The tongue 9 is riveted or otherwise secured to the lateral extension 2 of the frame 1, as indicated at 10, and is shown in normal position in Fig. 2. The marginal edge of the sheet 7 is adapted to be gripped between the strip 8 and the adjacent face of the frame 1, and to clamp the paper in position. The clamping strip 8 is moved into the dotted line position 11 shown in Fig. 2, the paper inserted, and the clamping strip 8 released. This will retain the paper in position with a minimum amount of gripping surface and will not tear or mutilate the paper. A releasing cord 12 is connected at 13 to the clamping strip to facilitate releasing of the same when the paper is hung in position.

The ceiling line is designated 14 in Fig. 1 and it is known to those skilled in the art that in hanging paper on the walls of a room it is necessary that the upper marginal edge of the paper strips be spaced a short distance from the meeting line of the ceiling and the wall, so that the border strip may be placed in position. I have provided a gage means for limiting the distance to which the upper marginal edge of the paper is disposed and this gage means includes a plurality of bars 15, said bars being provided with a plurality of apertures 16 to facilitate adjustment'of the gage bars. Said bars 15 are bolted or otherwise detachably secured at the opposite extremities of the frame 1 as indicated at 17 in Fig. 1. Suitable securing bolts 18 are provided having wing nuts 19 thereon which are adapted to clamp the bars in position. The adjusted position of one of being slidably engaged as at 6 to facilitate the bars is indicated by dotted lines and designated 20 in Fig. 3, it being seen from Fig. 4 that the bolt 18 extends through one of the apertures 16 provided.

In use a sheet of paper is clamped in position on the frame 1, suitable adhesive material being placed on one face of the paper and the same raised to the desired height. The gages: 16 will limit the distance to which the frame may be raised relative to the ceiling and the paper may be brought into contact with the wall. A downward pull is now directed on the cord 12, releasing the paper and allowing the frame 1 to be drawn downwardly over the paper, serving to compress the same into engagement with the wall.

In Figs. 5, 6 and 7 I have illustrated two additional forms of my invention adapted for use in papering the ceiling of a room,

and for placing the border sheets in position.

I will first describe Figs. 5 and 6 which embody the preferred form of my invention for hanging paper on a ceiling of a room. In this form of my invention I pruvide a carrying frame having an intermediate portion 21 formed preferably of tubular metal and substantially rectangular in cross section. The intermediate portion 21 is provided with a laterally extending portion 22, into which a handle or supporting arm 23 is receivable. A pair of relatively parallel frame members 2 1 and 25 are formed on the opposite extremities of the intermediate portion 21, these frame members being preferably formed integral with and i at rightangles to the intermediate portion 21 as indicated to advantage in Fig. 6 at the points 25. Both of the frame mem bers 2 1 and 25 are provided with clamping means, this means being substantially identical with that form of my invention shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the clamping strips being designated 26 and 27 and the resilient tongues 28 and 29 respectively. As shown in Figs. 5 and 6 the clamping strip 26 is in operative position and in engagement with a sheet of wall paper shown in dotted lines and designated 30. The cord 31 is shown connected at 32 with the clamping strip 26. It is, of course, understood that the cord 31 may be detachably connected with the strip 26 so that when it is desired, the clamping strip 27 may be used. In this form of my invention a sheet of wall paper may be secured by'one of its marginal edges to the frame member 24:, as indicated to ad vantage in Fig. 5. Suitable adhesive material having been placed on the upper face of the paper, the-frame may be raised until the surface of the paper engages the ceiling. When the paper has been hung in position, the clamping strip 26 may be moved out of engagement with the paper, thereby releasing the latter and by a gentle lateral movement of the frame the paper maybe,

pressed firmly into position.

In Fig. 7 is shown a form of my invention preferably for use in placing border paper in position. This form of my invention is practically a modification'of the first form of my invention shown in Figs. 1 to f. A supporting frame 33 substantially T- identical with that form of gage shown in Figs. 3 and 4 hereinbefore described. Releasing cords 43 and 44 are provided, said cords being connected respectively with the clamping strips 37 and 38. \Vhen using this form of my invention a strip of border paper shown in dotted lines in Fig. 7 and designated 45 is clamped adjacent its'free extremities and along one margin thereof by the clamping strips 37 and 38. The gages may be set to the desired position and the device raised into position for hanging the paper. Of course, it is understood that the paper will be coated with an adhesive material and when the same is placed in the desired position, the clamps 37 and 38 may be withdrawn from the paper, releasing the latter and the frame may be drawn downwardly overthe paper to insure its securement to the wall. 7

From the above description taken in cons nection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that a clear and comprehensive understanding of. the'construction, operation, and advantages of my invention may readily be gathered. It will be noted that the walls, ceiling, and the border sheets may be quickly and accurately disposed in position on a wall or ceiling and that the structure employed is, while strong and durable, simple in construction, thereby tending to,-

ward a cheapness of construction and manuvention as possessing a peculiar form and construction, it is desired that it be understood that I may make such changes in the details thereof as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A wall paper handling device, including a frame substantially T-shaped in c011- figuration, a handle associated therewith, gage members thereon for insuring a predetermined placing of the paper with relation to a ceiling, and clamping means carried by said frame.

2. A wall paper handling device, including a frame, a handle thereon, gage members for insuring a predetermined placing of the paper with relation to a ceiling carried by the frame, and a clamp on the frame for engagement with a sheet of paper.

3. A wall paper handling device, including a frame, a handle extending laterally therefrom, means for engagement with a sheet of paper, and means for gaging said frame for insuring a predetermined placing of the paper with relation to a ceiling.

a. A wall paper handling device, including a carrying frame, ahandle associated therewith, gaging means carried by said frame for insuring a predetermined placing of the paper with relation to a ceiling, and clamping means on the frame for engagement with and retention thereon of a sheet of wall paper.

5. A wall paper handling device including a supporting frame, carrying frames carried by said supporting frame, and means on said carrying frames for engagement with a sheet of paper, and gaging means carried by said frame for insuring a predetermined placing of the paper with relation to a ceiling.

6. A wall paper handling device including a supporting frame having a plurality of carrying frames associated therewith, clamping means on said frames, and means associated therewith for releasing said clamping means and gaging means carried by said frame for insuring a predetermined placing of the paper with relation to a ceiling.

7. A wall paper handling device, including a frame, a handle associated therewith, a clamping strip resiliently mounted on said frame in engagement therewith to retain a sheet of paper in position thereon, releasing means therefor, and a plurality of gage members associated with said frame for insuring a predetermined placing of the paper with relation to a ceiling.

8. A wall paper handling device, including a supporting frame, carrying frames on said supporting frame, clamping means on the carrying frame, gaging means carried by said carrying frames, for insuring a pliedetermined placing of the paper with relation to a ceiling, said carrying frames and clamping means adapted to co-act for re tention of a sheet of paper or the like.

9. A wall paper handling device, including a carrying frame having an intermediate portionan d parallel portions at right angles thereto, means on said carrying portions for clamping a sheet of paper, and gaging members carried by said frame for insuring a predetermined placing of the paper with relation to a ceiling.
