clare the following to be a full, clear, andy exact description of the invention, such as willA enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a card construction on which belt fasteners are adapted to be positioned and secured. The method of securing the fasteners'to said card and the package produced thereby form the subject matter of a previous application, Serial No. 875,921, filed December 7, 1914, from which application the present one is a division. Previously, belt fasteners have been secured to a card consisting of a base having upwardly bent sections integral therewith, one of said sections being provided with an outturned portion, the ends of the fasteners being inserted through holes in the upturned sections and the body of the fasteners being received in slots in said outturned portion. It has been customary in attaching belt fasteners to this card to form the card from a fiat sheet of material with the base and an upturned section at each side of the base and with an outwardly turnedportion integral with one of said upturned sections, the fasteners being attached by machinery and the outturned portion forced against the fasteners and pressed between them, the bodies of the fasteners crushing their way into the outturned portion. In order to successfully accomplish this it has been necessary to especially prepare one edge of the card to give it proper qualities permitting it to be pressed outward between the fasteners and still leave firm sections between the bodies of the fasteners to hold the fasteners separated one from the other. Accordingly a great deal of expense and trouble to thus especially. prepare the cards has been necessary but it has heretofore been impossible to eliminate it.
It is the object and purpose of the present invention to avoid and do away with this especially prepared edge of the card using in its stead a very simple and economical construction requiring no particular prepa- Seral N0. 57,819.

The card whichis to be used for holding the belt fasteners is -formed as a thin flat strip l of any suitable material, preferably thin card-board, which is provided with spaced apart rows of circular openings 2 located as shown at a distance from the edges of the strip. The card is further provided closely adjacent one edge with a plurality of elongated openings 3 equal in number to the number of the circular openings at one side of the card. The openings 3 eX tend inwardly from the edge of the card and at substantially right angles thereto.
When the belt fasteners are attached the card is bent along the dotted lines a, b and c, in this manner forming a base 4L between lines a and with upstanding ksections 5 and G bent inwardly toward each other, there being also provided an outwardly bent portion 7 which is turned from the upper end of section 6. In applying the fasteners to the card, the fasteners being of the forma* tion shown at 9 in dotted outline in Fig. 2, the pointed ends thereof are first inserted through the circular openings Q- and the portion 7 of the card is brought against the inner side of the legs of the fasteners with the openings 3 opposite the respective legs. Part 7 is then bent outward and the legs enter the slots 3, first disrupting the very thin section at S which lies between the outer ends of the slots 3 and the edge of the card. It will be evident that this can be accomplished without any disruption or destruction of the intermediate parts of the card between the openings, the bodies of the fasteners being received within each opening 3 while the intermediate portion forms a tongue to separate and hold the fasteners separated from eachv other. Furthermore there will be a tendency for the thin part at 8 which has been disrupted on entrance of the fastener into the openings 3 to return to position and insure against any aed cidental displacement of a fastener.
It will be apparent from this construction that a very simple and economical card is produced for carding belt fasteners and one produced at a much less cost than the one before required where a special preparation of the card at one edge was needed.
