Be it known that I, JOHN F. OCONBOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Draft-Yokes for Railway-Car Draft-Rigging, of which the follmving is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in draft gear yokes for railway car draft rigging.
The object of my inventlon is to provide an efficient draft yoke having means for readily detaching a draw bar therefrom.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in vertical, longitudinal section of a draftyoke embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line 2-2 of Fig.1. Fig. 3 is a front end view of the And Fig. 4: is a perspective View of the rotatable segment.-
Referring to the drawings, .the numeral 5 indicates the upper limb and 6 the. lower limb of the draft yoke. At their rear ends, the. said limbs are connected by a preferably integral member 7. The pocket 8 within the yoke is adapted to,receive a draft gear in a manner that will be well understood. At its forward end, the yoke is provided with a preferably integral, hollow head 9 formed by the upper member 10, which is preferably the integral forward end of the upper limb 5, the side plates 1'111 and the lower plate 12. The lower plate 12 is preferably a forward extension of the lower limb 6 curved downwardly and then upwardly, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The side'plates 11 connect I the'upper and lower limbs of the yoke and are suitably spaced apart laterally to permit the reception within the hollow head of the yoke of the butt 13 of the draw bar 14. The upper portion of the head is provided at its forward end with the 'inturned gib 15 adapted when the draw bar is in position within the yoke to be engaged by the upper shoulder 16 of the draw. bar. The draw bar is likewise provided with the usual lower shoulder 17. The space between the lower face of the gib 15 and the lower plate 12 is sufiicient to permit the entry therethi'ough of the draw bar butt. A member '19. which is preferably integral with the side plates 11, passes transversely of the head near its lower portion, the. upper surface thereof beingsubstantially flat and the lower face being suitably curved to form between it and the member 12 a curved channel 20 adapted to receive the similarly curved locking segment 21. The locking segment is of a suitable length to ernnt its insertion in the channel 20 with the front end 22 thereof in the same plane or below the plane 23 of the floor of the yoke head, formed by the front end of themem-ber 12 and the upper surface of the transverse member 19. When the locking segnient is in this position, the
draw bar may be inserted in the head until the. shoulders thereof are back of the gib 15 and the forward opening 24 of the channel QO. lVhen in this position, the draw bar is lifted until the upper shoulder 16 thereof engages the gib 15 and the locking segment is then rotated in the channel 20 until the forward end thereof is inengagement against the lower shoulder 17 of the draw bar,-as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The segment is provided with a groove 25 which, when the segment is in its boltis such that, in the most usualcar constructions, it will be sufliciently beneath the draft sills of the car to permit its ready insertion and removal without the slotting of said draft sills. The side plates on their inner faces near the bottom portion of the head are provided with the upper shoulders 31-31 against which the forward edge 32 of the locking segment engages when in its locked position, thus on forward pull of the draw bar, its connection with the yoke is maintained through the engagement of the upper shoulders against t e gib 15 and through the engagement of the lower shoulders against the locking segment, which looking segment is held in. position by theshoulders 31 and through it is secured within the channel 20. i
