A. C. BECKER.
CURTAIN FASTENER.
APPLICATION man lULY 3. 1915.

"UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADOLPH C. RECKER, 0F OAKVILLE, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO WATERBURY MFG. 00., OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION.
CURTAIN -F.ASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 19, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADOLPH C. BECKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakville, in the county of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new, and useful Improvement in Curtain-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in
Figure l a top or plan view of a curtain fastener constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 an underside view. Fig. 3 is a side view. Fig. 4 an end view. Fig. 5 a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 6 a transverse sectional view. Fig. 7 a perspective view of the spring strip detached. Fig. 8 a perspective view of the headed stem, detached.
This invention relates to an improvement in curtain fasteners and particularly to that type which comprises a base or post with a turn button connected-thereto and adapted to be turned at right angles to the post, the object of the invention being a simple construction and arrangement of parts whereby the button will be held in its locked or unlocked position; and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claim.
In carrying out my invention I employ a base or post 9 preferably struck up from sheet metal forming an oval chamber 10 and a flange 11 with perforations 12 through which screws or rivets may extend to secure the post in position. In the top of the post is a clearance opening 13 for the screw threaded end of a shank 14 which is provided at its lower end with a head 15. This head has fiat sides and is located between the ends 16 and 17 of a strip 18 of spring sheet metal which is located within the chamber 10 and formed with a hole 19 through which the screw stem passes, the
ends of the strip being turned inward at substantially right angles so as to bear on opposlte sides of the head 15 yet adapted to yield as that head is turned. Between the head and the strip is a coil spring 20. Secured to the threaded stem 14 is a turn-button 21 oval in cross-section and correspond mg in dimensions at its base to the upper end of the post 9. After the turn-button has been screwed onto the stem so as to draw the head 15 between the ends 16 and 17 of the spring strip 18 and placing the spring 20 under tension, the turn-button is firmly secured to the stem in any desired manner. As herein shown the button is struck inward on opposite sides forming indentations 22 and forcing a portion of the metal of the button into the sides of the stem so as to prevent the button from being turned off from the screw when it is turned on the base. These buttons are used in the usual way for fastening curtains which are preferably provided with the usual gromets which set over the posts 9. When the gromets are in place over the post 9, the turn-buttons are given a quarter turn so that the ends of the button project beyond the sides of the base or post. The coil spring 20 tends to hold the turn-buttons in engagement with the post, and the engagement of the ends 16 and 17 of the flat spring 18 hold the post in either position in which it may be turned, either to allow the gromet to be passed over it, or in its turned position to lock the gromet with the post.
I claim A curtain fastener comprising a chambered post, a flat spring strip located in said chamber and having its ends turned inward, a headed stem extending upward through the chamber, the said head being located between the ends of the spring strip, a coil spring located between the head and strip, and a turn-button fixed to the upper end of the said stem.
ADOLPH C. BECKER.
