IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,845, dated October 10, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J. W. HAMPTON, of Mount Pleasant, in the county of Henry and in the State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a washing-m achine, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side view, part in section, of my washing-machine. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same.

A represents the box, of suitable dimensions, resting uponlegs B B, and provided with a hinged lid, 0. Upon this lid is firmly secured a semicylindrical casing, D, in which is placed a long vertical pinion, E, the lower j ourn al a ofsaid pinion passing downward through the center of the lid. Opposite the casing D is a casting, E, with brace G to hold it straight. In this casting and in the upper end of the casing D the journals of a large cog-wheel, H, have their bearings. These journals extend on both sides from a hub, b, which hub is placed eccentrically in the wheel, as shown. I represents a lever attached to the wheel H, and is movable so that it can be placed on either side of the hub, whereby the operator is enabled to wash a heavy bed-quilt with the same case as light apparel. Upon the journal a, below the lid 0, is secured a casting, J in the shape of afourarmed cross, each arm having near its outer end a pin, i, projecting downward. The lower end of said journal on passes through the center of two arms, K K, which are let into each other in the form of a cross, and are secured to the journal by a nut, d, on its lower end, the pins 1' 2' entering holes in the upper sides of said arms. From the ends of the arms K K rods L L, or rather round bars, extend downward, which bars form the washing mechanism. At one end of the box A are two upright posts, MM, slotted vertically, as shown, and in said slots are placed the journals of two rubber rollers, N N, one above the other. The journals of the lower roller rest in the ends of the slots, while the upper roller rests upon thelower, and itsjournals extend far enough beyond the posts M M to receive bearing pieces 6 e on top. Aloop, formed on the upper end of a rod, f, is placed over each bearing piece, and the lower end of each rod is attached to a lever, O, pivoted to the leg of the box. The two levers O 0 meet in a mortise or opening in the end of another lever, P, pivoted to a post under the box. A cord, h, passes from the other end of the lever P overa pulley, k, to a treadle, It, and by these means the operator may produce any desired pressure on the wringer-rollers. Under the rollers N N is apan, S, conducting the water into the box A.

Above I have described how a clothes-wringer may be attached to the washing-machine box and operated; but I make no specific claim to such invention under this patent.

Havingthus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination of the casing D, casting E with brace G, elongated pinion E, eccentric cogwheel H, and movable lever I, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.

2. In combination with the casing D, casting E with brace G, elongated pinion E, and eccentric cog-wheel H, all secured to the hinged lid of the box A, the cross J with pins M, arms K K with round bars L L, and the pinion-journal a with nut d, substantially as and for the purposes hereinset forth.
