To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, CARL GLEICr-IE, a citi- -zen of the German Empire, and resident of Berlin, Germany, have invented certain 5 new and useful' mprovements in or Relating to Motor-Flows, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to motor-plows and has particular reference .toa motor plow, the frame of which is vertically adjustable relatively to one or both driving wheels about the spindle of' the corresponding driving piniony or pinions.
In motor plows, the frame of which can be vertically adjusted relatively to one or both driving wheels, the driving Wheel is preferably mounted on a branch or arm, mounted to swing about the axis of the gear spindle supporting the driving pinion. This construction has chieiiy the advantage that the exact engagement of the driving pinion mounted on the gear'shaft, with the teeth of the corresponding driving wheel is insured, at least when the plow, or more particularly its frame, is not subjected to any twisting. Such twisting always occurs in the working of plows, and 'results in constantv movements of the frame parts 'of the plow relatively to each other, more particularly of the frame girders situated at one side, relatively to those at the other side. This twisting of the frame is so consider able that, for instance, the radiator @t the engine mounted at the front end, has to be protected by special means from damage liable to be caused by the twisting of the for instance', as was done hitherto. the' branch or arm supporting the driving wheel, is pivoted to the frame of the plow, while the driving pinion 1s supported in the f driving pinions.
gear case, in accordance with the construction usual in motor vehicles, a twisting of the plow frame relatively to the casing must react more particularly on the wheels arranged on the said parts moving relatively to each other, or on the bearings of their spindles. In other words, in addition to a jamming at the bearings, there will also take place a change of position between the armpivoted to the plow. frame and supporting the driving wheel, and the driving spindle or its pinion, mounted invthe gear case, which destroys perfect engagement of the pinion with the driving Wheel. 'The same possibility of twisting exists even when the spindle of the driving pinion is also supported on the frame, as has already been suggested. In this case also, owing can exercise a strain only on the gear case,
and bring about a change of position only between the casing and the plow frame, but not between the two parts (driving Wheel and driving pinion) engaging with each `ether. Only in this way is it possible to insure completely a permanently correct engagemcn't` of the driving wheels with the In order to insure as "ar as possible the connection of the driving wheel arms with the plow frame ink such a method of support, the journal of. each driving wheel is extended inward according to my invention and guided in a link provided on the frame. ln this way, the driving wheel arm or branch as well as the driving wheel-itself, is given, at any 'verti- .cal position of the plow frame, a point of support against lateral movements and oscillation.
@construction according to my invention is illustrated inthe accompanying drawings in which,
Figure 1 isa side elevation of a motor plow-'according ton'm'y invention, and Fig. 2 'plan of the same. Figs.. 3 to 5 are diagrammatic views of vertical movements of the frame.
The engine 1, the gear case 2 and the plowbodies. 3 are all mounted'on a -rigid frame `4. The geancaseis provided at its sides with cylindrical projections 5, 6 supported in bearings 7 and 8, secured to the frame 4. Close to the outer end, each of the projections v5, Gis provided with a ball bearang 9 in which is supported the spindle 1() of a pinion llgenga'ging with the toothed rim v12'of the corresponding driving wheel 13 or 14.
On the parts ofthe gear'case projections 5, 6 surrounding the ball bearings 9, are pivotally mounted,'concentrically or rather coaxially with the pinion 11 andits 'spindle 10, arms or branches 15, 1 6 in which are supported the axles 17, 18 ofthe driving wheels 13.01` 14. Each of the axles 17, 18 supports an inside/journal 1S guided in a link 2O or 21 secured to the fraaie 4 and intended to protect its arms 15 or 16 from twisting.
With' the foremost-end of the branch 15 engages, through a powerful helical spring 2 2, a cable 23 carried over 'three rollers 24, 25, 26 'mounted on the frame 4, to a drum i 27` which is supported near the drivers 'seat 28 and can be rotated from the said seatby nieansof a crank'handle30 on a spindle 29. In the saine way, the cable'3lengaging with ltwo rollersy 32, 33 mounted on theframe 4, to
wheels13, 14 in its highest positionas shown va ldrum 34 which is arranged close below the drum 27 yd can also/be rot-ated by means-of the crank handle' 30 when it is appliedA to itsspindle. The frame Acanlbe moreover vertically adjusted relatively to the steering wheel 3G, from'the drivers seat in a well known manner by means of acrank handle 35, a positive connection 38 leading from the'spindle -3 7 supporting the crank 35, to a pinion .39 engaging with a toothed rack 41 secured to thefsupport 40 `of the steering wheel 36.
' When the plow isv being driven upon la road, the frame 4 is opposite' the driving in Figs. 1 and 3. If the plow is'- driven on thegfie'ld to be'plowed, it must work, provided thatl the first furrow has not .yet been 9Uoftlie driving pinions 11.
very important for the whole construction insured in any position,
#the frame. the front, end of thearm 16,.is carried'overl lVhile in the construction illustrated both Y driving wheels 13, 14. mustvbcl uniformly supported on the rigid frame inthe manner described, in branches or arms mounted to swing about the spindles of the driving piri- 'j ions of the said driving wheels, the said' method of support, in plowswith a separate plow frame adjustable relatively to the main frame, is necessary only for one driving. wheel, for attaining the purpose in question.`
Only av comparatively "small effort "is roquired for the vertical adjustment of the frame 4 relatively to the driving wheels 13,
14, .as the leverageof the branches. or 4arms 15 or 1G can be selected or proportioned in a very favorable manner. for the purpose. It4
is also important that the arms 15, 16 are supported in a reliable and firm manner on the parts of the outward projections 5, 6 of tlie gear case 2,*siirrounding the bearings It is further of the plow that lateral arms of the gear case a, viz., the above mentioned projections 5, 6 are used as bearings for the branches or arms. This arrangement, in addition to the A.advantages mentioned in the beginning, has
alsotlie further advantagethat the gear case itself forms a transverse girdei' for the frame 4, .and that the three-point-suspensioii which is desirable in all motor vehicles, is even during "the adjustment of the frame 4 or twisting of I claim: 1.
