Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 22', 1916.
Application filed. June 28, 1915. Serial No. 36,847.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WARREN W. DOHERTY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York,- State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact description of the in vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. i
This invention relates to improvements in wrenches, and particularly to the type of wrenches known as rigid jaw wrenches.
One object of the invention is to provide a rigid jaw wrench which is provided with a plurality of interchangeable jaw members whereby the wrench can be made. to fit a large number of different sized nuts or screw caps.
Another object is to provide a novel form of removable jaw member and means for holding the jaw member to the wrench.
. Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is an elevation of a wrench made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 22 of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 33 of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the arm members removed.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 represents the shank of the wrench having the heads 11 and 12 respectively on the opposite ends. Each of these heads has a'recess 13 in the outer end, the upper and lower walls of which are formed with longitudinally extending V-shaped grooves 1 1. Rearwardly of each of the heads is a transverse opening 15 formed through the shank in which is rotatably disposed the knurledhead of a screw bolt 17 engaged through a longitudinal passage formed in the head. The outer end of the threaded portion of the bolt is disposed within the inner end of the recess 13.
The movablej aw member, as clearly seen in Fig. 4 comprises a pair of leg portions 18 and a connecting end portion 19, the outer longitudinal faces of the leg portions are formed with longitudinal ribs which are oppositely beveled as at 20 to fit within the V-shaped grooves 14 of the head of the wrench. The space between the leg memhers is adapted to engage diametrically opposite faces of a nut or a screw cap. The outer face of the connecting member 19 has a threaded socket 21 which receives the outer end o f'the bolt 17. As will be noted in the drawing, the outer sides 22 of the ribs are parallel with each other, and perpendicular to the faces of the legs whereby there are formed small triangular spaces between said sides and the adjacent portion of the walls of the V-shaped grooves. These small spaces thus hold the portions 22 at the sides of the ribs from obstruction by dents or nicks in the walls of the grooves 14. This will facilitate the ready insertion of the jaw members which are used in connection with the wrench so that by interchangeably securing the jaw members within the head of the wrench differently sized nuts and screw caps can be quickly and easily acted on.
Vhat is claimed is:
A wrench comprising a shank, a head on the end of the shank having an open-ended recess formed therein, said recess including parallel walls having longitudinal V-shaped grooves formed therein, a screw disposed in the inner end of the recess, the shank having a transverse opening adjacent the head, a thumb-piece carried by the screw and disposed in the said opening, and a removable jaw block of substantially U-shape and disposed within the recess, said screw engaging in the inner end of the said jaw member and longitudinal ribs formed on the outer faces of the arms of the U-member, said ribs being substantially V-shaped in cross section and having portions of their side walls arranged in parallel relation.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in the'presence of two witnesses.
WARREN w. DOHERTY.
