Description

incassa LNFOR) v2l'. DAVIS, 0F BATTLE CREEK, MICHIGAN.
RECEPTACLE-SUPPORT AND COVER OPERATING AND LOCKING MEANS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 22, 1916.
Application filed March 15, 1915. Serial No. 14,423.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, LINFoRD J. DAvIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Battle Creek, Michigan, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Receptacle- Supports and Cover Cperating and Locking .Meansb of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in receptacle supports and cover operating and locking means.
My improvements are especially designed by me for use as garbage holders and I have illustrated the same in the accompanying drawing adapted for such purpose. My improvenients may, however, be readily embodied in structures designed for other purposes.
The main objects of this invention are: First, to provide an improved receptacle holder and cover operating and locking means. Second, to provide an improved receptacle holder and cover operating and locking mechanism which is adapted to lock the receptacle upon the support when the cover is closed. Third, to provide an improved structure embodying these advantages which is simple and"economical and not likely to get out of repai'j and one which is easy to operate. u
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
l accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the followingspecification.
The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly-illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming va part of this spe icatio, in; which':
Firure l is a .de elevation of a structure emp odying the features of my invention. Fig. 1I is a horizontal section on a line corresponding' to line 2 2 of Figl with the receptacle removed. Fig. Ill is an enlarged detail vertical section through the cover actuating and locking mechanism.
' In the drawing. similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are. taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the drawings, the supporting frame in the structure illustrated comprises a pair of cross base members 1 and 2. the ends of the base members being turned down# wardly to provide legs 3 which terminate inf.,y feet 4. An upright 5 is formed integrally '60 with the rear legs 8 it being avcontinuation, thereof. The leg portions are provided with return bends or folds 6 which constitute re` I' taining members for the receptacle 7. The' i base members are crossed at right angles and secured togetherby rivets 8. A hinge arm 9 isprovided for the receptacle coverl 10, the hinge arm being pivoted on the 11p-" per end of the upright 5 at 11. The upright j is given'a quarter twist at 12 so that the arm 'lfO 9 lies side by side therewith thebetter to receive the pivot 11. The cover 10 is provided y with a socket 13 for the hinge arm 9. A j foot lever 14 is pivotally mounted on the 1.1' base at 15, the foot lever being circular' in, 75 form, see Fig.' II. The lifting bar 16 is con-l nected to the lever by the pivot/17. 'The l lifting bar 16 has a longitudinal slot 18 therein engaging the pin 19 on the hinge arm 9 thus providing a lost motion connection for the lifting bar and cover. A looplike latch 20 is mounted on the pivot 19 to embrace the upright 5. The upright is pro vided with a notch-like keeper 21 with which the latch engages when the cover is closed thereby locking the cover in its closed position and also securing the receptacle upon the support. The latch is connected to the lifting bar by the link 22 which is pivoted to the lifting bar at 23 a to the latch at 24 so that during the initial movement of the lifting bar the latch is disengaged and on further movement of the lifting bar the cover j is raised.` This arrangement secures a positive operation of the latch to and from its engaging position and also an operating means which effectively releases the catch without liability of injury to the parts evenl should they become coated with ice or otherwise obstructed. When the cover is raised the receptacle is freed so that it can be removed from the support and another receptacle substituted therefor. A brace 25 is provided forthe upright.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a receptacle support, an upright on said support, a receptacle ar- 'ranged on said support, a cover for said pivoted on the receptacle support, a longi- 4tudinally slotted lifting bar mounted on said lever, a pin on said hinge arm engaging said slot in said bar, permitting a Vlimited movement of the bar before the coverf is raised, a: loop-like latch pivotally mounted on said pin to embrace said upright, said upright being provided with a 'notch-like keeper with which said latch engages when the cover is closed, and a link connecting said latch to said lifting bar whereby the latch is disengaged on the initial movementof the lever.
2. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a receptacle support, an upright on said support, a receptacle arranged on said support, a cover for said receptacle, a hinge arm for said cover pivotally mounted on said upright, a :foot lever pivoted on the receptacle support, a longitudinally slotted lifting bar mounted on Said lever, a pin on said hinge arm engaging said slot in said bar, permitting a limited movement of the bar before the cover is raised, a latch pivotally mounted on said hinge member, said upright being provided with a keeper coacting with said latch, and a link connecting said latch to said lifting bar whereby the latch is disengaged on the initial movement of the lever.
.3. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a receptacle support, an upright on said support, a receptacle arranged on said support, a cover for said receptacle hinged to said upright, a foot lever pivoted on said support, a liftingbar mounted on said lever and-having a lost motion connection with said cover, a latch for said cover, a keeper coacting with said latch, and a link connecting said' latch to said lifting bar whereby the latch is disengaged on the initial movement of the lever. ln witness whereof, I have hereunto set .my hand and seal in the presence of two witnesses.
