CAR-Boor. v
To alle hom/t may concern:
Be ifTnown that I, RICHARD VEBB BUR- NETTt residing at `the city of Montreal, Province of Quebec, Dominion of' Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Roofs; andI do hereby declare that the followingjis a full, clear, and
Vexact description thereof.
The/ object of my invention is to provide a car roof all strains between the principal memberswhereof are converted into shearing action at'the points of union and to this end the invention consists of metallic pur-v v lins and metallic cai-lines of angular crosssection with their fiat sides 1n contact and vrigidly connected together thus forming an .horizontal sectional view of a car roof containing my invention taken on line A A Fig.
2-; Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical sectional 'View taken on line B B Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a part side elevation and part longitudinal sectional viewtaken on line C C Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail sectional view taken on line D D Fig. 1.
The sides 2 2 and ends 3 of the cai` may be of any preferred construction with Z- plates 4 and angle-iron end plates 5.
According to my invention the roof framec'onsists of a Series of arched carlines 6 of `channel-iron and a series' of inverted channeliron purlins 7 arranged back-to-back and rigidly connected by electric welding. The ends yof the purlins'rest upon and are riveted to Vthe end plates 5 as at 8 and the carlines have the ends of their flanges cut ,ofl and the portions contiguous to the ends sheared ofi' :as at 9, the ends 10 of the webs being bent down lover the side plates and riveted there- Specification cf Letters Patent.

to as at 12. This homogeneous frame carries the roof' sheets which consist of corrugated metal, the sides of the Sheets being bent over-the flanges of the cailines as at 13 with their edges turned up as at 1l to afford means of attachment permitting maximum play of the sheets without wearing upon the edges of the cai-lines. This attachment means comprises a series of studs 15 welded to the carlines and threaded to receive nuts 16, the turned up edges 14 being borne upon by the edges of curved plates 17 through which the studs project, such plates being clamped in place by the nuts 16, thus affording the freedom of play for the sheets as above mentioned.
vThe running board 20 is carried on Z- lbrackets 21 electrically welded to the bottom webs of the cai-lines. This construction has the advantage of direct connection between the carlines and purlins and between the running-board brackets and the cai-lines and with electrically soldered joints that all strains upon these members are converted into shearing action at the point of union which is rendered of the electrically welded joint.
What I claim is asfollowsz- 1. lnacar the combination with the rooffraine containing a series of cliannel-iron cai-lines, of' a series of roof-sheets having downwardly bent side edges of' snlliciently greater width than the flanges of the carlines to lprovide clearance spaces therebetween, and means securing the extremities alone of the said side edges4 to the interior of the webs of the carlines.
2. In a car rooi',V a metallic`carline of channel cross-section arranged with its flanged portions extending upwardly, a securing member welded to the top of' the web maximum strength by l with dbwnwardly turned side edges entering 'the carlnes and hevmg turned-back ex- -treme edges, and means fastening the turned back edge-portions to the interior of the carlnes.
' In'testimony whereof I have signed my r'name to this specification 'm the presenceof two Witnesses.-
RICHARD WEBB B'URNETT. Witnesses:

T. J. GRIFFIN.
