To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FERDINAND WESEL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Brooklyn, of the city of New York, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cans, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a can for holding liquids that are easily volatilized.
The invention is also directed to a plug or stopper that normally closes the can, said plug being constructed so that it comprises a member that can be moved by external pressure to permit the flow of liquid from the can and which plug also comprises a relief valve to automatically permit the escape of vapor from the interior of the can when the pressure becomes excessive.
Another feature of the invention is the constructing of a can plug or stopper with a hollow member through which liquid can fiow from the interior of the can when a hand operated valve is open and also providing within said hollow member a relief valve to permit the escape of vapor from the interior of the can.
As showing a specific embodiment of the invention reference is made to the drawings forming a part of the Specification and in which Figure 1 shows a transverse sectional View of a can provided with a stopper the latter being shown in its normal closed position. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional View of the upper portion of the can provided with a plug, the latter being shown in open position. Fig. 3 is a side view of the movable member in the plug through which the liquid flows from the interior of the can. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views of a tube in which a relief valve is fitted, and Figs. 6 and 7 are detail views of the hollow screw plug member in which the movable member shown in Fig. 3 is slidably mounted.
The can body A is provided with a screw threaded ring B in which the plug or stopper 0 is held. The plug or stopper C comprises the hollow screw threaded plug member D and the hollow movable member E which is provided with relief means F to permit the escape of vapors from the interior of the can when the pressure becomes excessive. The plug or stopper also comprises between the hollow screw plug D and Patented Aug. 15, 1916.

the hollow movable member E a valve G which normally closes the passage-way from the nterior of the can to the interior con ductlng portion H of the hollow member D. The joint between the ring B on the can body and the hollow plug member D is made tight by the packing K in the annular opening L of said plug member.
The movable member E is normally held in the closed position shown in Fig. 1 by the compression spring M. By merely pressing the fingers on the flange N of the movable member in the direction of the arrows indicated in Fig. 2, the parts can be positioned asshown in said last mentioned figure. It will be observed that in this position the packing portion G of the valve G will be moved from the seat G I thus opening the valve whereby liquid can flow from the can in the direction of the arrows through the openings 0 and tubular portion H. The movable membenE also comprises as a part thereof the member E having a screw threaded connection at E and a seat E for holding the packing G which is preferably made of leather. The member E is also provided with the open ing P communicating with the vent opening Q. There is also screwed into the member ET the tube R having the restricted opening R communicating with the vent opening Q. The outer diameter of the tube R is less than the interior diameter of the tubular portion H so that there is a free passage from the openings 0 through H. The restricted opening R is normally closed by the ball relief valve S normally held in closed position by the spring T, the upper end of which spring is seated against the member U which is secured to the tube It in any suitable manner. The tube R is also provided with the small openings R which permit the escape of vapors passing through the openings Q and R when the valve S is raised due to the excess of pressure within the can. The member E of the movable member E is also provided with ears Y to which a ring W and chain V are riveted at X. The outer diameter of the ring W is greater than the interior diameter of the ring B which is secured to the can body and therefore the stopper C can be removed from its normal position on the can only a limited distance, dependent upon the length of the chain. This construction constitutes a practically permanent connection between the stopper and the can and permits the can to be readily filled but prevents the stopper from being completely detached from the can.
It is obvious that various forms and modi fications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. lhe combination of a can body and a plug, the can body being provided with a screw threaded plug receiving portion, the plug having a screw threaded member which is secured in place on the can by being screwed into the screw threaded portion of the can body, the plug also having a hollow movable member slidably mounted in said screw threaded member of the plug, the plug also being provided with a compression spring surrounding the hollow movable member and engaging said last mentioned member and said screw threaded plug member whereby the spring will press a valve packing on the hollow member into engagement with a valve seat on the screw threaded plug member so that the contents of the can will be prevented from flowing from the can past said valve seat and packing when the hollow movable member is held in its outer position by the spring, the screw threaded plug member and the hollow plug member being constructed so that when the hollow member is pressed inwardly the can contents can flow past said valve seat and packing directly into and from the hollow slidable plug member, said last mentioned member being provided with a spring pressed relief valve which normally closes an opening leading from the interior of the can to the hollow portion of said members, which valve is arranged so that it will permit an escape of gas from the interior of the can when the pressure within the can exceeds a certain amount.
2. A can body and a plug, the plug comprising a fixed member which can be detachably secured in place on the can body, a hollow member which is slidable in the fixed member and a compression spring which normally forces the hollow member outwardly whereby the hollow member and the fixed plug member can cooperate to prevent a flow of fluid from the interior of the can between said members into and from the hollow member when the hollow member is held in its outer position by the spring, said hollow member and said 'fixed member being constructed so that when the hollow member is pressed inwardly the can contents can flow between said members into and from the hollow member, the hollow member also being provided with an opening leading from the interior of the can directly into the hollow portion of said member whereby a relief valve carried by the hollow member will permit an escape of gas from the interior of the can when the pressure on the interior of the can rises above a certain amount.
