Description

view of my improved hounds bent.
FRED OLIN SMITH,
OF TIFFIN, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN WAGON-HOUNDS Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,420, dated September 26, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRIDOLIN SMITH, of Tif fin,'in the county of Seneca and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wagon-Hounds; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same,'reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side view of my improved hounds before being bent, to show the construction. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to improve the construction of bent hounds for wagons so that so many of them need not be spoiled in bending, and so that they may be stronger and better when bent; and it consists in the construction of the hounds as hereinafter more fully described.
A is a guide-block or dormer, which is made.
straight upon one edge and convex or rounded upon the other, as shown in Fig. 1. B is the hounds, or rather the strip of timber to form the hounds. The strip B is placed upon the rounded side of the guide block A, and is secured .to it by clamps O placed upon its ends and upon the ends of the block A, shoulders being formed upon the straight edge of the said block A to receive the said clamps, so that they may not be in the Way. The blockA and strip B are then passed through a sawing or other suitable machine and a strip, 1), sawn or otherwise removed from the said strip. By removing the piece b from the strip B while clamped to the rounded side of the formerA a straight out may be made, which will leave the strip B thinnest in the middle and gradually increasing in thickness toward the ends. The strip B is then removed from the block A and bent into an oval form, as shown in Fig. 3. By removing the strip 1) from the timber B before bending it the hounds may be formed without spoiling so manyin the bending as is unavoidable when they are bent in the ordinary manner. The hounds thus formed are also stronger and better adapted for use than when formed in the ordinary manner.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The hounds B, having a piece, b, removed from one side, leaving the strip or hounds B thinnest in the center and gradually increasing in thickness toward the ends, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The block A, rounded upon one side to receive and hold the strip B while the piece I) is being removed, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. The hounds B, bent into oval form and made thinner in the middle than toward the ends, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
FRIDOLIN SMITH.
