Application filed August 23, 1915. Serial No. 46,863.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN F. MEYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cheyenne, in the county of Laramie and State of lVyoming, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Attaching Telescopes to Firearms; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for quickly and easily attaching telescopes to and detaching the same from firearfilns, more particularly army and sporting r1 es.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this class which although being very simple and inexpensive, will be eflicient and durable and applicable to a number of makes of guns.
lVith this general object in view, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and in unique combinations of parts to be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In describing the invention I shall refer to the accompanying drawings which constitute a part of this application and in which:
Figure 1 is an edge view of a device constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the application thereof to an army rifle; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the invention applied; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the portion of the rifle with which the invention coacts. Fig. 4; is a top plan view of such portion; Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the device; Fig. 6 is an elevation showing the edge of the device opposite that seen in Fig. 1; Fig. 7 is an end view; and Fig. 8 is a vertical transverse section, as viewed along the plane indicated by the line 88 of Fig. 6.
In these drawings wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 1 has reference to a horizontal elongated plate having in its lower side a circular socket 2, such socket being here shown as positioned near the front end of the plate. The opposite ends of the plate 1 are formed on ares having as their centers the center of the socket 2. Each of such ends is provided with an outstanding flange 3, one of which is provided with screw threads 4 throughout its length for a reason yet to be set forth.
Ofiset laterally from the plate 1 is a horizontally disposed bracket bar 5 whose intermediate portion is increased in width at one edge as disclosed at G and joined (preferably integrally) to said plate. The opposite ends of the bar 5 are offset downwardly and are provided with dove-tail ribs 7 which may be either secured thereto by screws or the like, or may be formed integrally therewith as shown in the present embodiment of the invention.
In applying the device to use, the socket 4 2 receives therein the usual upstanding stud 8 on the upper side of a number of types of rifles such as that disclosed at 9 in the drawings, while the flanges 3 on the ends of the plate 1 are received beneath the front and rear overhanging flanges 10 and 11 which rise from the rifle at points spaced respectively in front and rear of the stud 8, in which position the attachment is locked by an appropriate set screw 12 which is threaded downwardly through the plate 1 and which bears against the portion of the firearm from which the stud 9 and flanges 10 and 11 rise. The device is not locked by the set screw 12, however, until properly adjusted by the usual transversely positioned thumb screw 13 which is carried by the front angular flange 10 with its threads exposed to the rear thereof, such threads being therefore received by the threads 4 on the front end of the plate 1. By this means, it will be evident that proper adjustment of the screw 13 will swing the plate 1 laterally to such an extent as to properly position the bracket bar 5 in respect to the barrel of the rifle, the adjustment being facilitated by the scale 4.
Vith the parts constructed and arranged as above described, the front and rear mounts 14 and 15 of an appropriate telescope 16 are engaged with the dove-tail ribs 7 and locked against movement there on by thumb screws 17. The construction of the telescope and its mounts, however, as well as the manner of securing the latteragainst movement, constitutes no part of the present invention and is merely illustrated for the purpose of more readily disclosing the application of the latter to use. Furthermore, it is to be understood that the stud 8, the flanges 10 and 11, and the adjusting screw 13, may be found on a number of types of rifles for securing the rear sights thereof in adjusted position.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be understood that a very simple and eiiicient device has been provided for accomplishing the desired results, that the same may be quickly and easily attached and detached, and that when not in use, the device being light and compact, may be readily carried in one of the pockets of the user.
I claim:
1. A device for attaching telescopes to firearms, comprising a horizontal elongated plate having in its lower side a circular socket, .and having its opposite ends formed on arcs having as their centers the center of said socket, and a horizontal telescope attaching bar carried by the plate and offset laterally therefrom in substantially a horizontal direction.
2. A device for attaching telescopes to firearms, comprising a horizontal elongated plate having in its lower side a circular socket, and having its opposite ends formed on arcs having as their centers the center of said socket, and a horizontal telescope attaching bar carried by the plate and offset laterally therefrom in substantially a horizontal direction, said bar having its opposite ends oflset downwardly and provided with telescope attaching means.
3. A device for attaching telescopes to firearms, comprising a horizontal elongated plate having in its lower side a circular socket, and having its opposite ends formed on arcs having as their centers the center of said socket, one end of said plate being provided with screw threads for engagement by an adjusting screw carried by the firearm, and a telescope attaching bracket carried by said plate.
4. A device for attaching telescopes to firearms, comprising a horizontal elongated plate having in its lower side a circular socket, and having its opposite ends formed on arcs having as their centers the center of said socket, one end of said plate being provided with screw threads for engagement by an adjusting screw carried by the firearm, and a horizontal bar oflset laterally from the plate and having its intermediate portion increased in width at one edge and joined to said plate, the ends of said bar being offset downwardly and provided with telescope attaching means.
5. A device for attaching telescopes to rifles comprising a horizontal telescope attaching bracket bar having a laterally oil'- set attaching base to be received in the seat usually receiving the rear sight of the rifle.
6. A device for attaching telescopes to rifles comprising a horizontal bracket bar having an attaching base to be received in the seat usually receiving the rear sight of the rifle, said bar having downwardly offset front and rear ends provided with means for attaching the telescope thereto.
7. A device for attaching telescopes to rifles comprising a horizontal bracket bar having a laterally offset attaching base to be received in the seat usually receiving the rear sight of the rifle, said bar having downwardly offset front and rear ends pro- 1 vided with means for attaching the telescope thereto.
