COMBINATION WRENCH AND VISE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Ax'inonv NEUMAYER, a citizen. of the United States, residing at Belleville, in the county of St. Clair and State of lllinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination \Vrenches and Vises, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to combination tools and is more particularly concerned with a wrench so equipped as to render it capable of employment as a vise in addition to its customary functions.
As a principal object, this invention contemplates the provision of. a clamping bracket formed with sockets in which the special wrench of this invention is securable, such wrench being provided with jaw attachments fitting it for use as a vise when supported by said bracket.
More specifically, it is an object of this invention to provide a wrench having a stock seatable in the special bracket of this invention, a fixed jaw being formed upon said stock and a shank carrying a movable jaw being receivable in the stock, such shank being controllable from either of its opposite extremities and such jaws being provided with means fitting the wrench for use as different formsof a vise.
A further object of this invention is to provide vise plates and vise jaws which are respectively securable within the fixed and movable jaws of the special wrench comprehended by this invention in order to equip the; wrench for use in a variety of manners.
The above and additional objects which will become. apparent as this explanatory description proceeds, are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in the acc0m panying drawings, described in the following specification and then more particularly pointed out in the claims which are appended hereto and form a part of this application.
With reference to the drawings, wherein there is illustrated the preferred embodiment of this invention, as it is reduced to practice, and throughout the several views of which like characters of reference desig nate similar parts: Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view taken through both the Wrench and the supporting bracket of this invention, the former being equipped as a pipe vise, Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view of Specification of Letters Patent.

In the embodiment illustrated there is provided a wrench including a stock 10 preferably formed from a durable metal and having the reduced extremity 11, which is squared as is the main body of the stock. The opposite end of the stock 10 is bored to slidably receive the shank 12 which carries the movable jaw 13 adapted to coact in the customary manner with the fixed, jaw 14 integrally formed upon the bored end of the-stock 10. This shank is also formed with a longitudinal bore which in its case extends entirely therethrough, such bore 15 apgnmumcating with the threaded bore 16 orrned through the nut .17, this latter being secured to the shank '12 through the medium of removable bolts or screws 18. An extension screw projects through this threaded bore and the communicating bore 15, such screw 19 carrying upon its inner end the knurled nut 20 which within the customary slot 21 forimanuai control of movement :;5 the shank 12. Upon its other end the screw 19 is formed with a head 22 which is recess in the manner indicated by the numeral 23 for the rece )tion of the key member 24, the movement 0 which may be readily controlled through the medium of the operating hand wheel 25. It will be seen that the nut 20 and the wheel 25 form means whereby the wrench of this invention may havh its jaws adjusted handily in any of its embodied uses.
Adapted to support the wrench of this invention as a vise, there is provided the bracket designated 26 as a whole, such bracket being of the arcuate shape illustrated in Fig. 1, having sockets 27 and 28 formed recess or slot 27 is'forined with the teeth or corrugations 30 in order to'grip the surface of any support upon which the bracket of the combination visa is positioned. Threaded through the opposite surfaceof this slot is a screw 31 carrying upon its upper extremity the head 32 to which may be secured by any suitable means as illustrated, the clamping plate 33, the teeth 34 of which are adapted to engage the opposite surface of the support from that engaged by theteeth 30. The hand Wheel 35 similar tothe hand wheel 25 is employed for the ready positioning or removal of this bracket upon the support.
While the foregoing discloses the particular construction of the wrench in general and its amociated bracket, the means=for adapting such wrench to a variety of uses, as provided by this invention, is now to be disclosed. Upon reference to Fig. 5, it will be seen that both the movable jaw 13 and the rigid jaw 14 of the wrench are formed with the arcuate and toothed gripping edges 36 which are those most in use in the ordinary employment of the'wrench. It is proposed, however, to equip'the wrench with removable means facilitating the employment of this tool as a pipe-wrench and as both a pipe-vise and as one of ordinary construction in connection with squared work.
To these ends recesses 37 are formed in the jaws of the wrench and preferably in the staggered relation of Fig. 6 where one of the slots in the jaw 13 centrally op oses the two similar but spaced slots forme in the rigid jaw 14. In each of these slots is accommodated a right angular gripping jaw illustrated in detail in Fig. 8, such jaw 28 "including a pair of legs 39 the inner edges of which are toothed as at 40, and bolt means 41 extending through apertures formed through the jaws and registering with the similar apertures 2 at the apex of each j aw 1 38. Tllhesc jaws 38= while fitting the wrench for use both asa. pipe-wrench or pipe-vise cannot be used advantageously for the handling of squared work. Accordingly, there is provided for this latter use the vise plates 43 as shown in Fig. 9, each plate having a body-portion of sufiicient width to extend beyond the sides of the jaws l3 and 14, as shown in Fig. 1, the extending portions carrying guide flanges 44; which serve to seat each plate upon its respective aw. Rear wardly carried by the plate is a small lug or projection 45 which is adaptedto enter the accommodating recess 46 formed at the base of each aw. Forwardly of the jaw and of the plate ixcd thereto are provided the respective and registering threaded aperturesd? and 48 to'accommodate the bolts or screws 49 whereby the plates are securely and removably associated with their jaws.
Fig. 10 illustrates a socket 50 of the usual character in which the stock 10, or the reduced portion 11 thereof, may readily be seated and secured through the medium of keys extendin through the socket apertures 51 and with t e' registering stock apertures 52. Acsimilar means is employed to retain the wrench within its bracket 26, key apertures 53 being formed at right angles to each other through the walls of the bracket sockets and being adapted to severally register with the aperture 54 formed longitudinally of the reduced stock 11 in orde'rto accommodate the securing key '5 5 which removably connects the wrench with the bracket.
From the foregoing detailed description, the operation of the combination .wrench and vise of this invention should be readily apparent in all of its embodimentswhen being used in the normal manner as a monkey Wrench, the tool should be used in the mannor of Fig. 2, manipulation of the jaw 13 being secured through the medium of the knurled nut 20. When equipping the tool as a pipewrench the aws 38 are inserted into the wrench jaws in the manner clearly indicated by Figs. 5 and 6 while a pipe-vise is similarly secured by placing the wrench thus fitted in one of the sockets 28or 29 of the bracket 26 and securing it therein by means of thekey 55. In this form the hand wheel 25 is preferably employed for adjustment of the jaws 13 and 14. When a vise-for the handling of squared Work is to be furnished the plates 43 are oppositely positioned 11 on the re: spective jaws 13 and 14 in the o vious manner made known by Figs. 3 and 4. It should accordingly be apparent that a wrench such embodiment of this invention, a reduction to practice thereof should be by the appended claims.
What is claimed is limited only 1. The combination with a wrench includ v ing a. stock, having a reduced extremity, a shank slidable in the opposite extremity of said stock, a jaw rigid with said shank, and a jaw rigid with said stock, of a bracket formed with intersecting sockets for the several receptions of said reduced extremity in variously positioning said wrench as a vise. 2. In a Wrench, :1 stock having a longitudinal bore, a shank slidable in said bore, and similarly bored from end to end, a jaw carried by said shank, a jaw carried by said stock. a screw for determining movement of said t ank with relation to said stock, and means for operating said screw at each extremity thereof.
The combination with a wrench including a stock, a shank slidable in said stock, jaws carried by said stock and shank, a screw member controlling the movement of said shank, a nut carried at one extremity of said screw member for manual control thereof, removable key means operable at the opposite extremity of said screw for a similar control thereof, of a bracket formed with intersecting sockets for the reception of said shank in variously positioning said wrench as a vise, and means for mounting said bracket upon a support.
4 The combination with a wrench having a longitudinally bored stock with an integral laterally projecting jaw on one end and a re duced extension on the other end in alinement with said stock and provided with a trans erse perforation, a longitudinally bored shank slidable in said stock with a jaw on one end mating with the jaw on the stock and a short thread terminating the bore at its opposite end, a screw in the bore of the shan passing through the threaded nd and engaging therewith, means at each extremity of said screw for operating the same, a sup port for holding the wrench having a socket in one end for the reduced extension on said 3 stock, and a key fitting transvei sely in said support and the perforation in the reduced extremity.

In combination with a Wrench having a longitudinally bored stock opening through one end only, an integral laterally projecting jaw on the open end of said stock and a reduced extension on the other closed end in alinement with said stock and provided with a transverse perforation, a shank slidablc in said stock with a jaw on one end mating with the jaw on the storm, said shank having a longitudinal bore ex tending entirely through the same, a nut re movably secured to the end of the shank opposite the end provided with the jaw, a. serew in the bore of the shank passing freely there-- through and engaging with said nut, a h lt on the inner end of said screw for turn ing the same and moving the shank longi tudinally. a socket in the opposite end of said screw to receive means for turning the san re, a support for the wrench having a socket therein for the reduced extension on tlu' shank, and a key fitting the transverse per forations in the support and the perforation in the reduced extremity.
