ANDREVT BGSSHARDT, OF '75 R EIQNSYLVANIB.
Application filed Eune 16, 191.4%.
To In whom it may concern Be it known that I, Anonnw nossrmnn'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at York, in the county of York, Sta to of Pennsvlvania, have invented certa'n new and useful. 1mpi-(wenients in PenciLSharpeners, and i do hereby declare the following to ho a full clear, and exact description of the inventioin such as will enable others skillet in the art to which it appertains to make and use the Jame.
This invention relates to a pencil sharpeuer.
Mn object of the invention is to provide a very simple and small sharpener which may be attached to a pencil and left thereon in such position that it may be readily brought into use.
A further objcct of the invention is to provide means for clamping the device on the pencil.
A still further object of the invention isto provide means for releasing the clamp, the further movement of which will apply the cutting knives.
lVith these and other objects in view such as will appear as the description progresses, my invention comprises the combination and arrangement of parts as herein set forth and subsequently claimed.
Referring to the drawing: Figure 1 is a side elevation of device on a pencil in inoperative position. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the same in operative position. 3 is a section on line 38 of Fig. 1. Fig. l is a detail with parts broken away showing the frame of the clamping fingers.
Referring to the drawing wherein like parts are indicated by like characters tlirouglmut the several views: My device comprises an annular casing having a vertical front wall 2 with a circular hole 3 formed therein. A tubular portion 4- extends rearwardly from this hole and spaced from this portion a and formed integrally with the periphery of the plate 2 is an annular plate 5. Rotatably mounted between the plate 5 and the tubular member 4c is a collar 6 having a cam face 7 on its forward end and an operating shank 8 on the rear end thereof which extends beyond the rear end of the plate 5 and is cut-away on its lower face, as at 9. On the rear end of this tubular member 4 is formed fingers 10 on which are located wedges 11 which fit into the cut-away portion 9 ofthe mem- Spccification of Letters Patent.
- 15 have longitudinally extending c .t 21g elges 17 so that when the device is rotated Serial 1T0. 84.51%8.
her 6. An outwardly projecting portion 12 is formed on this collar 6 and a pin 13 pro- ]ects trom this portion and extends throu h an egee slot 1%. Pivotally secured between the plate o and the tubular member a are a plurality oi knives 15 having rearwardly extending arms 16 which nor cam race of the member 5. Tlhese and the knives are in contact with the point of a pencil the same will be sharpened.
lrssuming that the device is in place on a At this time the pin 13 is in the rearmost portion of the slot 14:. The binding action between the mc1nher 6 and the wedges 11 is due to the fact that as the fingers 10 are resilicnt and the plate 5 is rigid, the riding up of tie wedges on the cut-away portion 9 of the member 6 pushes the said fingers into engagement with the pencil.
hen it is desired to sharpen the point of the pencil it is only necessary to grip the operating shank 8 of the member 6 and turn the same slightly, which causes the pin 13 to ride in the slot Ll and thus relieve the pressure between the wedges 11 and the cutaway portion 9 of the member 6, the entire device may then be moved to the end of the pencil, at which time the member 6 is turned farther and as it is turned the engagement of the pin 13 with the slot 14 causes the said member (3 to be drawn forwardly and the projections 11' to ride up on the cam face 7 so that the knives 15 will be thrown downwardly at an angle and the cutting edges thereof will contact with the portion of the pencil to be sharpened. The plate 5 is then gripped and rotated in the opposite direction to that in which the member 6 is rotated, which causes the knife edges 17 of the knives 15 to cut the material of the pencil and thus sharpen the same. After the pencil has been sharpened the operation may be reversed and the device clamoed up on the upper end of the pencil out 01. the way but ready and convenient for the next operation.
From the foregoing description it may be seen that I have provided a very simple but small pencil sharpener which may be readily attached to a pencil and kept thereon, while the same is being used'so that it will be in a convenient position for use and will thus save a great deal of time in sharpening a pencil.
It is obvious that the number of knives ranged to engage a pencil, means on said body portion to clamp the same to the pencil, knives pivotally mounted on the body portion, said clamping means being construeted and arranged to move the knives to operative positions when operated to release the pencil. V V
2. In combination, a body portion constructed and arranged to engage a pencil, knives pivoted to said body portion, means 011 said body portion to grip the pencil and means to actuate said gripping means and on the reverse movement to move the knives to operative positions.
3. In combination, a body portion of annular formation and having a tubular mem ber extending therethrough, said tubular member having resilient fingers on the rear end thereof, wedges on the resilient fingers, a collar mounted in the body portion and having a cam face on its forward end, knives pivotally mounted in the body portion having extensions engaging the cam face, means for causing the collar to move the knives to operative positions when movedin one direction, and to actuate the resilient fingers to grip the fingers when moved in the other direction.
4. In combination, an annular body portion adapted toreceive a pencil, knives pivoted thereto, means rotatably mounted in said body portion to throw the knives into operative position, said means maintaining the knives in such position during the reverse movement of the body portion in one r direction to cut the point of a pencil.
In testimony whereof, I ailix my signature, in the presence of two wltnesses.
