To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD C. MEIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Phoenixville, in the county of Chester and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in boilers, and more particularly to an auxiliary heater which may be utilized as a preheater for water or a superheater for steam, and which may be located in boilers as they are now manufactured and utilize products of combustion which would be otherwise wasted.
A further object is to provide an attachment of the character stated which constitutes one or a battery of counter-current de vices, whereby the water or steam, as the case may be, is compelled to travel in a rela tively narrow path between metal surfaces, and be rapidly heated in its travel.
A further object is to provide a counter current device of the character stated in which the water or steam is compelled to travel in a whirling circuitous path and scour or keep clean the metallic surfaces by reason of the force of steam or water.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in horizontal section illustrating a boiler of a well known type eqiiipped with my improved attachment. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is an enlarged broken view in longitudinal section illustrating one of the heaters shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4i is an end elevation of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a view in transverse section on the line 55 of Fig. 3.
1 and 2 represent the water legs of a boiler, which are connected by water tubes 3, and are provided with stay tubes 4 which brace the walls of the water legs. Through these stay tubes, at one or both ends of the boiler, 1 project my improved heaters 5, and shall hereinafter refer to the heaters as preheaters for water, but it is to be understood that the heaters may be utilized for superheating steam as well as preheating water.

Figs 1 and 2, I illustrate the boiler equipped with a battery of heaters, and as all of the heaters are precisely alike, the description hereinafter of one will apply alike to all. Each heater 5 comprises an outer tube 6 which, in the form shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4L, and 5, has a closed inner end 7, and at its outer end is secured in an opening 8 in a box 9. An inner tube 10 of appreciably smaller diameter than tube 6, is located within the tube 6, and at its inner end terminates short of the inner end 7 of tube 6. The outer end of tube 10 is secured in an opening 11 in a plate 12 which closes the outer end of box 9. 13 represents a covering plate located against the plate 12, and having a passage 14- therein communicating directly with pipe 10, and the passage 14: of one heater is connected to the passage 14 of the next adjacent heater by means of a pipe 15. The plates 12 and 13 are secured together and to the box 9 by bolts 16, and gaskets 17 are interposed between the plates and the box to secure a tight oint. The box 9 is provided with a screw-threaded opening 18, which is connected by a-pipe 19 with a similar opening 18 in the next adjacent heater. Between the tubesG and 10, I preferably locate a spiral partition 20 which compels the water or steam, as the case may be,'to move in a swirling circuitous path, and keep the metal surfaces clean as well as increase the time of exposure to the heat.
Referring to Fig. 1, it will be noted that the water enters pipe 15 of one heater, ex-
tends through the inner tube 10, thence between the tubes 6 and 10 into box 9, from box 9 the water passes through pipe 19 into the box 9 of the adjacent heater, thence between the tubes 6 and .10 of the adjacent heater to the end 7 of the outer tube, and thence through the inner tube 10 to passage 14 and pipe 15. lit will therefore be noted that the water in one instance moves inwardly between the tubes and outwardly inside of the inner tube, while in the next adjacent heater the passage of water is just reversed, although this particular direction of flow is immaterial and may be varied to suit conditions.
The heaters are projected through the stay tubes 4. into a space which is normally a waste space, and hence the heater will occupy an area and receive heat Without red g the efiiciency of the boiler, but in fact, increasing the efficiency because of the preheating or superheating action of the attachment.
The partition 20 operates as a spacing device in addition to compelling a circuitous path of the water.
-With my improved heater, the water or steam is compelled to move into the heating space, and thence return and receive in both directions of flow the heat from the fire. In one direction the heat is intense, because of direct contact with the outer tube, and the movement of the water through the inner tube utilizes the radiating heat from the Water between the tubes, and a quick heating is the result.
With my improved attachment, I can equip an ordinary type of boiler with a preheater without increasing the boiler space, and I can, as above stated, utilize this heater for steam as well as water, and am not limited to the particular use.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a boiler having water legs, and a series of stay tubes in the water legs, of a heater comprising a series of boxes located outside of the water leg, said boxes having holes in their inner walls and being open at their outer ends, detachable plates secured to said boxes and covering the open end thereof, said plates having holes therein, tubes secured within the holes of said inner walls and projecting through the stay tubes in the water legs, tubes smaller than the first-mentioned tubes located inside of the first-mentioned tubes and secured within the holes of said plates, end plates each having a passage communicating with the ends of said small tubes, pipes connecting said passages of certain of said boxes, and other pipes communicating with the interior of certain of the boxes, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a boiler having water legs, and a series of stay tubes in the water legs, of a heater comprising a series of boxes located outside of the water leg, said boxes having holes in their inner walls and being open at their outer ends, detachable plates secured to said boxes and covering the open end thereof, said plates having holes therein, tubes secured within the holes of said inner walls and projecting through the stay tubes in the water legs, tubes smaller than the first-mentioned tubes located inside of the first-mentioned tubes and secured within the holes of said plates, end plates each having a passage communicating with the ends of said small tubes, pipes connecting said passages of certain of said boxes, and other pipes communicating with the interior of certain of the boxes, said end plates and boxes having flanges thereon between which the first-mentioned plates are located, and bolts projecting through the flanges and partitions securing said parts together, substantially as described.
