To all whom t may concern:
lle it known that l, Josnrrr l. EsoLn, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Fedro, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Combination-Padlocks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
rl`his invention relates to an improved combination padlock and more particularly to a lock of this type designed for the purpose of locking the steering post of a motor vehicle so as to prevent the unauthorized use of the vehicle.
lt is a more particular object of the invention to provide a simply constructed and positively operating locking device, the combination of which may be readily changed by the owner so as to preclude the possibility of the lock being opened and removed from the steering post.
t is another and more specific object of the invention to provide a body or casing having a stud integral therewith adapted for engagement in openings provided in the steering post and the steering shaft mounted therein, a shackle pivotally connected at one end to said body, a spring-pressed locking dog mounted in the casing to engage the free end of the shackle, a shiftable releasing clement for coperative engagement with said dog, a rotatably mounted plate having means co-acting with said element, and combination locking mechanism through the 1nediam of which said plate is actuated.
lt is a further general object of the invention to provide a locking device for the above purpose, which consists of a relatively small number of parts of simple form, whereby the device may be manufactured at nominal cost.

This body 5 has a concave recess in one end thereof and a lug or pin 6 centrallyv projecting from the wall of said recess. To the body 5, at one side of said recess, one end of the shackle 7 is pivotally connected, as at S. 9 designates the lined steering post of a motor vehicle and 10 the steering shaft mounted therein. rlhe walls of the post and the shaft are provided with openings 11 and 12 respectively, which are adapted to receive the pin or stud 6 when the post is turned so as to bring said openings into coinciding relation.
Within the body of the case, a shaft 13 is arranged, said shaft having a rectangular bore to receive a square shaft 111s. Upon the shaft 13, a series of spaced tumbler disks 15 are loosely engaged and a single tumbler disk 15 is engaged upon the upper end of the square shaft 14. Fach of the disks 15 is provided with a circular series of openings 1G therein, and beneath each of the disks a plate 17 'is loosely engaged upon the shaft 13. Between each of these plates and the next lower disk 15, a washer 18 is disposed, and a similar washer is also arranged upon the upper end of the shaft 13 between the upper disk 15 and the disk 15. Each of the plates 17 is provided upon its outer edge and at opposite points with the lugs 19 and 19 respectively, which project in relatively opposite directions. its clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the upwardly projecting' longer lugs 19 on the plate 17 extend through one of the openings in the next upper tumbler disk 15 and project above the upper face of said disk, while the downwardly projecting lug on each plate 17 is spaced from the upper face of the next lower disk 15. lt will be understood that any desired number of these tumbler disks and plates 17 may be employed. A lug 15a is formed in the bottom face of the uppermost Y 25. rIhe free end of a dog 26, which is pivotally mounted upon the plate 23 as indicated at V27, is adapted for engagement in the notch 25.` The dog 26 has one end of a rod 28 fixed thereto, said rod extending in parallel relation to the shaft 13 and normally bearing against the edges of the tumbler disks 15. Each of these disks 15 is provided in its periphery with a notch or recess 29 adapted to receive therrod 28 when the notches in all of said disks are alined. The notches in the disks 15 are of square or rectangular form, `while thedisk 15 is provided with a notch 29 in its outer edge having an inclined wall 29. A leaf spring 30 has one end fixed to the plate 23 and bears at its free end against the dog 26 and operates to force the free end of the dog inwardlyV toward theperiphery of the disk 24.
Immediately above the dog 26, the shiftable releasing member 31 is disposed, said member being in the form of a flat, elongated, metal plate having a transverse slot 32 therein opening upon one edge of the plate and adapted toV receive the pivot pin or studV on which the dog 26 is mounted.

as at 34, within the lock casing 35, and is provided upon one end with a shoulder 36 for engagement in a notch or recess 37 formed in the free end of the shackle 7. The coil spring 33facts against the other end of this dog to force the same inwardly and normally hold said dog in its locking position. This latter end of the dog is opposed to one end of the releasing element 31.
Upon the upper faceY of the lock case, a Vdial plate39 is suitably fixed and is recessed rto receive the lower portion ofthe knob 20.
A disk is rotatably mounted in the dial plate 39 and-engaged upon the upper end of the square shaft 14. This disk is formed with a plurality of spaced openings indicated at 20a, any one of which is adapted to receive a pin 22 projecting downwardly from the knob Vor head 20.` This knob carries a suitable indeX or pointer indicated at 40, which is adapted to be positioned with respect to any one of the graduations on the face of the dial. These graduations are suitably numbered, lettered, or otherwise differentially characterized so that the user in possession of the key to the combination may readily manipulate the knob 2O so as to open the lock and remove the same from the steering post of the vehicle.
1n the practical use of the invention, it will be understood that the several plates 17 are adjusted in relatively different positions between the spaced tumbler disks 15 and the upwardly projecting lugs 19 on said plate inserted through selected openings in the respective disks. The operator, upon turning the knob or head 20, rotates the shafts 13 and 14 and the disk 20, on the upper end of the latter shaft and also the uppermost disk 15 mounted upon the rectangular shaft 14. lThe lug 15CL on the disk 15 is thus brought into contact with the lug 19 on the plate 17 which projects upwardly through the next lower disk 15. This disk and consequently the plate 17, will thereby he rotated and the downturned lug 19 on the plate 17 brought into contact with the lug 19 projecting upwardly through the next lower tumbler disk 15. A further turning movement will rotate this latter disk and this operation is continued until the disks have been successively rotated and the recesses or notches 2O brought into alinement. At this time, the spring will act upon the pawl 26 and throw the free end thereof into the notch or recess in the disk 24, the vertical rod 2S entering the alined notches 29. The operator may now further rotate the inner shaft 13 and thus transmit movement to the plate 23 through the medium of the lock disk 24 and the pawl or dog 26 engaged therewith. In the movement of this plate it will be seen that the releasing element 31 will be shifted and the end thereof engaged against the end of the dog 33 to force the same outwardly against the actionof the spring 33, thus moving the other end of said dog inwardly and out of locking engagement with the shackle 7. The lock may then be readily removed from the steering post. Upon a reverse turning movement of the knob 20, the disk 15 is rotated and the beveled or inclined wall 29a of the notch 29 in the edge of said disk acts to force the post or rod 2S out of the notches in the other disks 15, and in the continued rotation of this disk rotation is transmitted to the several disks 15 through the interposed plates 17 to disaline the notches in the edges of the latter disks.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, manner of operation and several advantages of my invention will be readily understood. The combination may be radically changed by re-arranging the plates 17 between the tumbler disks 15, or the combination can be partially changed by readjusting the knob 20 and engaging the pin 22 thereof in another of the openings in the disk 20. The several parts of the locking mechanism can be readily asllO sembled, and as they are all of simple form, it will be seen that the device is not liable to get out of order and, therefore, will be positive and reliable in its operation.
While l have referred to my improved lock as particularly designed for the purpose of locking the steering post of a motor vehicle, it is, of course, apparent that the same can also be employed for various other analogous purposes.
While l have shown and described the preferred construction and arrangement o-f the several parts, it is to be understood that the device is susceptible of considerable modification therein and I, therefore, reserve the privilege of adopting all such legitimate changesl as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is l. A combination padlock including a casing, a shackle pivotally connected at one of its ends to said casing, a spring-pressed locking dog mounted in the casing to cooperatively engage the shackle, a shiftable releasing element for engagement with said dog, a rotatably mounted shaft, a plurality of spaced tumbler disks loosely mounted upon the shaft and each having a notch in its periphery, means arranged between said disks to transmit rotation successively from one disk to the other, means fixed upon the shaft to rotate one of the disks, and relatively movable means operatively connected to said releasing element adapted to engage in the notches of the loosely mounted disks when the same are alined, whereby said element is shifted upon a further rotation of the shaft to release the locking dog.
2. A combination lock including a casing, a locking dog mounted in said casing, a shiftable releasing element for engagement with the locking dog, a rotatably mounted shaft, a plate loosely engaged upon said shaft and operatively connected to said shiftable element, a plurality of spaced tumbler disks loosely mounted upony the shaft and each having a notch in its periphery, means adjustable upon the shaft between said disks to transmit rotation successively from one disk to the other, an additional disk rotatable with said shaft and also provided with a notch in its periphery, a spring-pressed element carried by said loosely mounted plate to engage in the notches of said disks when lthe same are alined, whereby rotation is transmitted to said plate upon a further rotation of the shaft and said shiftable element is actuated to release the locking dog.
3. A combination padlock including a casing, a shackle pivotally connected at one of its ends to said casing and a locking dog pivoted intermediate of its ends within the casing, a spring acting against one end of said dog to cooperatively engage the upper end thereof with said shackle, a shiftable releasing element for engagement with the latter end of the dog, a rotatably mounted shaft and a plate loosely engaged upon said shaft and operatively connected to said shiftable element, a disk fixed upon 'said shaft, a spring pressed pawl mounted upon the plate and adapted for locking engagement with said disk, a vertically disposed rod carried by said pawl, a plurality of spaced tumbler disks loosely mounted upon the shaft and each having a notch in its periphery, means adjustable upon the shaft between said disks to transmit rotation successively from one disk to the other, an additional disk rotatable with said shaft and also provided with a V-shaped notch in its edge to receive said rod, the notches in the loosely mounted disks also receiving said rod when said notches are alined to transmit rotation to said plate upon a. further rotation of the shaft and shift said element to release the locking dog, one of the inclined edges of the notch in the fixed disk on the shaft forcing said rod out of the notches upon a reverse rotation of the shaft.
