To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY P. EASTMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Livingston Manor, in the county of Sullivan and State ofNew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tie- Stretchers; and I. do hereby declare the fol,- lowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in tie stretchers, and has for its principal object to provide a device which will maintain the tie in a fresh condition and eliminate wrinkles and the like, thus giving worn ties the appearance of being new.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device whichmay be used in press- 'ing ties and holding the same in such a position as to avoid any wrinkling or injury thereto.

With these and other objects in View, the

invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth 1n the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which,

Referring now to the drawings by characters of reference, the numeral 1 designates as an entirety a tie stretcher constructed in accordance with this invention comprising the tapered base 2. This tapered base is provided at its reduced end with the longitudinal axial bore 3 which extends part way thereinto and has communicating therewith intermediate its ends the slot 4. The enlarged end of the base 2 is provided with the beveled faces 5 to enable a number of these devices to be piled one upon the other when the same are to be used in pressing. These tapered faces 5 also serve to prevent the clamp, which will be more fully hereinafter described, from sliding upwardly and releasing its hold upon the ties. The clamp hereinbefore mentioned comprises the clamping bars 6 which are connected at one end by the bight portion 7, which bight portion is enlarged to give the proper resiliency to the arms. These arms 6 are arranged so that they normally curve outwardly at their free ends, and one of the arms is slotted as at 8 to receive the turn button designated generallyby the numeral 9. This turn button 9 comprises the disk 10 having formed at each end the reduced portions 11, one of which terminates in the enlarged semi-circular portion 12, while the opposite end projects through an aperture formed in the arm opposite the one in which the slot is formed to pivotally secure the button 9 in place. When these arms are to be clamped the semi-circular portion 12 is passed through the slot 8 and turned slightly as illustrated in Fig. 1. In this position-it will be apparent that the same may be easily released by pressing the free ends of the arms toward each other and causing the edges of'the slots to engage the edges of the disk 10, thereby causing the button to turn on its pivot 11 into such a position as to enable the ends of the arms to separate and permit the head or enlargement 12 to pass through the slot, thereby eliminating the use of more than one hand in releasing the dev1ce.

Slidable in the longitudinal bore 3 in the reduced end of the base 2 is the plunger 13 which is provided at its upper end with the cross bar 14. This plunger is also provided with the pin 15 which extends through the slot 41 and holds the plunger in the proper position. A suitable coil spring 16 is arranged to exert upward pressure against the lower terminal of the plunger 13 to force the head 14 upwardly when the tie is in place. In order to hold the plunger and cross piece 14 downwardly when a tie is to be put in position, the hook 17 is pivotally secured as at 18 to the base 2 and the upper end of the v hook is arranged to engage the pin or nail 19 to hold the plunger inwardly when a tie is being put in place.

It will be apparent from the foregoing that in use the cross piece and plunger are first forced inwardly and hooked by means of the hook 17. The tie is then put in place and clamped by means of the clamp bars 6 and drawn tightly thereover. The hook is then released permitting the spring 16 to exert upward pressure on the plunger, and it will be apparent that the ties will be stretched, and wrinkles and creasesremoved therefrom.
