Be it known that I, MARIA J. YOUNG, citizen of the United States, residing at Barnesville, in the county of VClay and State of Minnesota, have inventedcertain new and useful improvements in Combined Quilting- Frames and Curtain-Stretchers; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in curtain stretchers and quilting frames of the combined type and resides in the provision-of a simple, inexpensive and effective device that can be adjusted to different sizes and which takes up vlittle space when not in use.

Another object is to provide a device of the character described having improved means whereby the device may be readily adapted for use as a quilting frame or curtain stretcher, in an expeditious manner and without requiring a series of adjustments.

Another object is to provide a curtain stretcher and quilting frame of the character described that will operate in a reliable manner and not in any way injure the curtain or-quilt as the case may be, and which is also inexpensive to manufacture, and light so as to be capable of easy handling.

The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specication and then more particularly pointed out as claimed.

With reference to the drawings, wherein l have illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention as it is reduced to practice, throughout the several views of which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts, Figure l is a side elevation of my improved device assembled, Fig. 2 is a top plan view, Fig. 3 is an end elevation, Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on the plane of line 4-4 of Fig. 2 showing the detail arrangement of adjusting means provided at the ends of the frame in elevation, Fig. 5 is a detail horizontal sectional view taken through the end pieces of the frame showing the adjusting arrangement, Fig. 6 is a ltransverse sectional view taken'on the plane of line 6-6 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 7 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view showing in detail the arrangement of ratchet I Specification of Letters Patent.

Fig. 8 is a fragmental side elevation of the' inner face of one of the side bars showing the recesses and openings for receiving the removable Ldesignated 2 as an entirety and which consists of side bars 3 and 4 and end members 5 and 6 that are connected with one another.

rllhe side bars 3 and 4 are provided with trunnions 7 on their ends which are inserted through openings in the upper ends of the legs 1 and openings in the end members 5 and 6. These bars 3 and 4 are arranged to be rotated when the device is to be used as a quilting frame and are provided-with a plurality of spaced upstanding pins 8 that are to be used when the device is operated as a curtain stretcher.

The end members 5 and 6 each consist of two slidable bars 9 and 10 that slidably engage one another and are each longitudinally slotted as at 11 and have their slots alining with one another. Mounted within the slots in the bars 9 and 10 are slide blocks 12 that carry upon their outer faces metallic plates 13 which engage the outer faces of the bars 9 and 10. rlhis slide block 12 prevents upward and downward movement of the bars relative to one another. An adjusting screw 14 is inserted through the plates 13 and block 12 of each end member and is provided with a nut 15 turned on its unheaded terminal. The plates 13 are loosely carried on the sides of the blocks 12 and by tightening the nuts 15 the plates 13 serve to clamp the bars 9 and 10 and hold them in adjusted position.

It will be readily seen that the frame 2 may be adjusted so as to accommodate a curtain or quilts or dierent sizes through the medium of the slidable bars 9 and 10.

As a means to adapt the device for stretching curtains l provide a detachable bar 16 that carries a number of spaced pins 17 similar to the ones 8 and is provided at its ends with trunnions or reduced extensions 18. A plurality of y spaced recesses 19a' provided with openings 19 are formed adjacent to certain ends of the bars 3 and 4 and adapted ends of the bar 16 resting in the recesses 19 of the bars 3 and 4 prevents rotation thereof, said bar adapted to be fitted in certain alining openings and recesses so that curtains of diderent sizes may be readily operated upon. To effect the removal or positioning of the bar 16 the end members 5 and 6 are adjusted as described so that the bars 3 and e are spaced properly relative to one another.

`When it is desired to use the device as a quilting frame, the bar 16 is removed from the frame so that the side bars 3 and 4 can be rotated. Keyed upon the outer ends of the trunnions 7 are ratchet Wheels 20 that are arranged to coperatie with pawls 2l.

To operate the device as a quilting frame,

The device may be used as a curtain stretcher and adjusted to suit the size of the curtain as Will be clearly seen. The curtains are secured by means of the pins 17 and 8,
