Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. OCoNNoR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Spring Draft-Gears, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in spring draft gears.
An object of the invention is to provide a spring draft gear of simple construction, few parts which may be readily assembled and disassembled, and in which the necessity of stop castings is eliminated.
The invention furthermore consists in the improvements in the parts and devices and in the novel combinations of the parts and devices as herein shown, described or claimed.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a longitudinal central vertical sectional view of a draft rigging, showing one embodiment of my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken substantially on the line 22 of Fig. 1 and Figs. 3 and 4: are vertical sectional views taken substantially on the lines 33 and l4 respectively of Fig. 1.
In said drawing, 1010 denote the center sills which are in the form of channels having their flanges outwardly turned, said sills being provided with slots 11 at one portion and elongated slots 12 in front thereof, the latter slots being adapted to receive a conpler key 13 therethrough and the slots 11 receiving a stationary transversely extending key 14. The gear proper comprises an outer casing 15 which, as shown, is substantially square in cross section and provided with forwardly extended side arms 16, each of which has an elongated slot 17 in which reciprocates the coupler key 13, said key 13 also passing through a slot provided in the rear end of the draw bar 18. The casing 15 is also provided with elongated slots 19 at the rear thereof, so that the casing 15 may slide back and forth on the stationary key 14:. The rear end of the casing 15 is closed by the wall 20.
Telescoped within the casing 15, is another casing 21 also of substantially rectangular cross section and having a closed to slide back and forth on the key 141, the
rear of the follower 25 engaging the rear wall 20.
The operation of the device is as follows z-Upon forward movement of the draw bar, the casing 15 is pulled forwardly by the coupler key 13 which thus causes a forward movement of the follower 25, thereby compressing the springs 24 between the follower 25 and the front wall 22 of the inner casing 21, the latter being held stationary by the key 14. Upon buffing movement the draw bar engages the inner casing 21 and forces the same rearwardly, thus compressing the springs between the front wall 22 and the follower 25, the latter being prevented from rearward movement by the rear wall 20 of the casing 15 which is held by the key 14:.
1. In a railway draft rigging, the combination with draft sills, of a stationary key mounted in said sills, a drawbar, two casings, one telescoped within the other and both of which are slidable with respect to said key, one forwardly only and the other rearwardly only, cushioning means mounted within said casings, and a coupler key connecting one of said casings with said drawbar, said coupler key being slidable with respect to said casing.
2. In a railway draft rigging, the combination with draft members, of a stationary key mounted in slots in said draft members, a casing slidably mounted on said stationary key, said casing being provided with arms extended forwardly of the key and also with portions thereof extending rearwardly of the key, said forwardly extended arms being slotted and adapted to be connected to adrawbar by a coupler key, a second casing telescoped within the first named casing and sliclable rearwardly with respect to said stationary key, said casing being adapted to have its front end engaged by the butt end i of the drawbar under buff, and cushioning means within said casings. v V
3. In a draft rigging for railway cars, the combination with draft sills, of a stationary key in said sills, two telescoped casings slidably mounted on' said key, each of said casings having a'closed end, said closed ends being oppositely disposed, a follower separate from either casing and slidably mounted on said key and engaging the closed end of one of said casings, springs mounted'within said casings and between said follower and the closed end of the other casing, and means for connecting one of said casings to the draw bar.
4. In a draft rigging for railway cars, the combination with draft sills, of a horizontal stationary key mounted between said sills, two'telescoped casings, the outer of said casings being closed at its rear end and the inner at its front end, both of said casings having longitudinally extending slots and thereby slidably mounted on said key, the outer casing being provided with forwardly extended side arms slotted to receive a coupler key, a draw bar, a coupler key extended through said draw bar and the slotted arms of said outer casing, the rear end of said draw bar engaging the front end of the inner casing, and a spring mounted within .end thereof and said follower, and means for connecting the outer casing with a draw bar. a
