BAG-FEEDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 559, 1M5. Serial No. 58,567.
-5 and useful. Improvements in Bag-Feeders;
and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and The primary object of this invention is to provide simple and highly ellieient means for separating the topmost bag or bag-tube from a pile or stack thereof, preparatory to feeding it to a printing-press or other long handling machine.
According to my invention restraining pressure is applied at or near one longitudinal side of the pile, on the top thereof, and
perferahly near one corner, and by introducing a separating element between the upper and, lower portions of the top-most bag-tuliie, the other longitudinal edge of the latter, at the opposite side of the pile, will be drawn inwardly a sufficient distance to clear a hold-down element, whereupon as the separating element is withdrawn the raised or separated edge of the bagtube will be prevented from returning to the pile.
The separated bag-tube may then be fed from the pile, 4
In the av ompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top FlaI) view sl'iowine; my improvement. Fig.
, is a view in side elevation of the parts. show -in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end view oh a pile o1. .l'iag-tubes showing the separator in engagement with a bag-tube. Fig. 4 is' a view similar to Fig. 3 but with the separator withdrawn and the feeding means 40 in position to engage the edge of the bagtube.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a stack or pile of bag-tubes which may be maintained at practically a -constant level.
by any suitable or known means. The longitudinal axis is perferably at right angles to the fowl-path to a. printing press or other hag-handling machine. The top of the pile is engaged by a presser 2 which is designed to bear against the, topniost hag-tube at a.
point near one edge of the pile, and prefen ably-in close proximity to one of the corners. The pressure exerted must be sutlicient to prevent any bodily'displacement of. the
topmost hag while such presser naintains a nxed 16l&l23.011 to the pile. I also provide an additional hold-down 3, for engagingthe opposite edge of the pile. This hold-down,
pile provided. it exerts less friction thereon ()ne hold-dow11 3 will than the presser 2 suiiice but more may he used. I
designates a reciprocating separating member which is designed to enter between the two sides, or upper and lower portions, of the topmost bag-tube, and by moving inwardly a suiiieient distance separate the upper and lower portions of the bag-tube to suoh an extent as to draw the one edge thereoi. upwardly and forwardly from beneath the hold-down. 3. This withdrawal of the edge of the bag-tube is rendered possi: ble only by maintaining pressure on the top of the pile through the medium of presser :2.
In the form illustrated, while the edge of Patented July 25, 1916,
come together it will fall against and rest upon the holddown 3. In this way the edge of the topmost bag-tube is held suiiiciently above the top oi the pile or stack to enable the bag to be engaged by suitable means, such as indicated at 6, and removed from the pile. In the form shown this is facilitated. by moving presser 2 from engagement with the pile. By the time the bag is we moved from the pile the presser is again moved into engagement with the pile so as to exert the necessary pressure thereonloefore the separating element 5 acts on the next bagg tuhe to a sufficient extent to draw the edge thereof inwardly and forwardly e'tore described. 7 Any suitable means may he employed for manipulating the various parts, that is to say, fori'aising and lowering the presser and hold-downs; for reciprocating the separating'elen'irnt; and for removing the topmost or separated bag-tube irointhe pile.
The advantages of my invention will readily heappreciatedbythose' skil in the art, and it will be observed that by means thereof I am enabled to easily and positively insure the separation of the topmost bag from a stack thereof.
1 do not restrict myself: to any particular construction for carrying out this invention, since it is manifest that any suitable means may be employed for applying suiiieient pressure against the top of the pile to insure the withdrawal of one edge of the topmost bagtube from its normal position and for pre venting it from returning to its former po sition after the separating means has been withdrawn. 13y top of the pile is meant that portion of the pile adjacent the separating means, and topmost hag-tube refers to that hag which is directly in position to he acted upon by the separating means.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a hag-tube feedeiy'means for apply ing pressure against the top of a pile of bagtubes near one side thereof, means for separating the two sides of the topmost hagtube while pressure is applied thereto by the first mentioned means, such separating means serving to raise and draw inwardly one longitudinal edge of the topmost bagtube, and means i'or removing said bag-tube from the pile.
2. In a hag-tuhe feeder, means for applying pressure against the top of a pile of hagtuhes near one side thereof, means for separating the two sides of the topmost bag-tube while pressure is applied thereto by the first mentioned means, such separating means serving to raise and draw inwardly one longitudinal edge of the topmost bag-tube, and feeding means for engaging said longitudinal edge.
In a bag-tube feeder, means for applying pressure against the top of a pile of hagtuhes near one side thereof, means for entering between the upper and lower sides of the topmost hag-tube while pressure is ap' plied thereto by the first mentioned means, a hold-down member for engaging the pile,
and means for engaging and feeding such topmost hag-tulle from the pile.
4,. In a hag-tube feeder, means for applying pressure against the top of a pile of bagtubes near one side thereof, means for entering between the upper and lower sides of i the topmost bag-tuhe while pressure is up plied thereto by the first mentioned means, a hold-down member for engaging the pile near the other side thereof and upon which the topmost bag-tube is designed to rest, and means for engaging and feeding such topmost hag-tuhe from the pile.
In a hag-tube feeder, means for applying pressure on the top of a pile of bag-tubes near one of its Corners, means for entering between the two sides of the topmost bagtuhe and drawing one side edge toward the side upon which such pressure is applied, hohhdown means engaging such pile when such topmost bag-tube is moved by said entering means, and means for feeding the topmost hag-tube from the pile.
\5. In abag tuhe feeder, a presser member for engaging the top of a pile of bag-tubes near one side thereof, means for separating the upper and lower portions of the topmost hag-tuhe while the latter is engaged by said presser member for drawing the 1011- gitudinal ,edge of said topmost bag-tube away from the other side of the pile, a, holddown member for engaging the pile when said topmost hag-tube is drawn away from said side and upon which said hag-tube is designed to rest when said separating memher is withdrawn, and means for engaging and feeding such topmost bag-tube from the pile. I
in testimony whereof, I have signed this speeifieatimi in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
