Description

B. JANUSZCZAK.
GRIPPING TOOL. APPLICATION H150 JUNE-11', 1915.
1,191,702. Patentd July 18, 1916.
WITNESSES GRIPPING-TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 18, 1916.
Application filed June 11, 19-15. Serial No. 33,611.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BRONISLAW JANU- szozan, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and residing in Point St. Charles, in the city of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gripping-Tools; and I do hereby declare that the following 1s a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
The invention relates to improvements in a gripping tool and its object is to devise an instrument whereby it will be possible to reach bottles or the like when on a shelf that is too high and not accessible otherwise than by raising a foot ladder.
The invention consists in a rod of convenient length provided at one of its ends with a jaw like member otherwise called the gripping member actuated by means of a lever and held in a closed positionby a strong sprlng.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention. Fig. 2 is a plan View showing the jaws closed. Fig. 3 is a plan view showing the jaws opened.
Like numerals of reference indicate corre sponding parts in each figure.
Referring to the drawings, 1 is a handle or rod of any suitable length, size and material.
3 is a cap embracing the end of the handle 1 and rigidly secured thereto, said cap having the projecting arm 3 the outward end of which is slightly enlarged and has the bolt hole 4.
5 is a plate secured to the handle 1, having the hand-lever 6 pivotally secured at 7.
8 is a bracket rigidly secured to the handle 1 and 9 is a lever fulcrumed at 10, one end of said lever having lateral projecting pins 11 and the other end is pivotally secured to one end of the rod 12, the other end of said rod being pivotally connected to the end of the hand-lever 6.
13 are loops having the projecting flanges 14 which are provided with holes 15, said loops being so arranged as to engage the projecting pins 11.
16 and 17 are rods pivotally secured at one end between the flanges 14 by means of the bolt 18 which passes through the holes 15.
19 and 20 are jaws each semi-elliptical and having projecting therefrom the members or arms 21 and 22, which are pivotally see cured to the ends of the connecting rods 16 and 17 by means of the bolts 23 and 24, each of said aw members being pivoted intermediate of their length to the projecting arm 3 by means of the bolt 25, thus forming sc1ssors-like gripping members which are covered with any suitable material to prevent the articles that are gripped from slipping. used.
27 is a coil spring secured at one end to the bolt 23 and at the other end to the bolt 24.
In the operation of the invention, the
A rubber cap 26 is preferably hand-lever 6 which is secured at the lower end of the handle 1 is pressed down thereby actuatlng the lever 9 fulcrumed at 10 by means of the rod 12. The projecting pins 11 on the end of the lever-9 engage the loops 13 when tipped over, pull the arm or rod 16 and. 17 forward, thereby effecting a spread out motion of the jaw members 19 and 20. When the hand-lever -6 is released, the coil spring 27 pulls the jaw members 19 and 20 together, which form a substantial gripping member sufliciently strong to hold a bottle or a box. 7 I
A feature of the invention is that in stores, one may dispense with the usual foot ladder which is generally used, and use a device such as herein described, thus saving'valuable time.
WVhat I claim is A device of the character described, com-' pris ng a pole, a cap thereon provided with an arm, a pair of crossed pivotally connected arms terminating in cooperating jaws and fulcrumed on the arm of the aforesaid cap, rods pivotally connected to said pivotally connected arms at one end, the other end of said rods being pivotally connected together, loops pivotally connected on the pivotal connection of said rods, a bell crank lever carried by .said pole near its upper end and Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, I). 0.
