Description
Patented Sep. 19, .1871.
NATHANIEL CROCKETT mpmvemeijl'fSiri` WaShing Machines'.
UNITED STATES NATHANIEL CROGKETT, OF PORTLAND, MAINE.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,125, dated September 19, 1871.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHANIEL OROCKETT, of Portland, in the county of Cumberland and in the State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, an d exact description thereof, reference being` had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon makinga part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangementof a washing-machine, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled Vin the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section, and Fig. 2 a plan view of my machine.
A represents a box of any suitable dimensions, provided with an interior concavemetallic bottom, B. At the sides of the box, in the center, are two upright standards, C C, in the upper ends of which a shaft, D, has its bearings. From the shaft D depend two arms, E E, having each a rubber, G, attached toits lower end. The rubu bers G G are made of Wood, in the peculiar form shown in Fig. 1, the bottoms being convex, to correspond with the concavity of the metallic bottom B, and the ends forming, as it were, convex stair-steps. They are of such width as to take up the entire width of the box A, but still have room enough to swing back and forth. In the ends of the box A are arranged perforated boards H H, one for each end of each rubber. These boards are hinged at their upper edges, and each board has a spring, a, behind it to press it inward. By this means pressure is exerted in both directions upon the clothes as the rubbers force them against the perforated boards. The arms E E are, by means of pitmen I I, connected with a double crank-shaft, J by ther turning of which the rubbers G G are swung backward and forward. The cranks on the shaft J are placed in opposite directions, so that the motion of the rubbers will be alternating or in opposite directions, one moving one way and the other the oth er way.
Havingthus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The within-described washing-machine, conM sisting of the box A with interior concave bottom B, standards C, shaft D, arms E, rubbers G, hinged perforated boards H, springs a, pitmen I, and crank-shaft J, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 3d day of August, 1871.
