To all whom it may concern:

. Be it known that I, MICHAEL N. MIST-ILER, a citizen of the United States, residing at WValter, in the county of Cotton and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Holding and Cutting Attachments, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a new and improved holding and cutting attachment for roll paper racks.

One of the particular objects of my invention resides in the provision of a device of the above mentioned character which is attachable to the usual types of roll paper racks such as are in every day use in all stores, and it provides a means of exposing a short unwound length of paper to be grasped after a supply of paper has been severed from the main supply roll. It will at once be evident that a device of this sort is both practical and convenient, since with the usual paper roll rack including merely a guide or a tension device once a length of paper is severed from the roll the person desiring to withdraw a further length from the roll is put to considerable trouble in lo eating the free end of the paper web. It is to overcome this objection that my invention is used.

Another object of my invention resides in providing means for maintaining a pressure on the cutting member so that the latter is held against the paper and thus the severed ends of both the web and the'unwound length is even and free from irregularities.

A still further object of my invention resides in providing means which renders the attachment adjustable as to height with re spect to the axis of the supply roll, and thus the paper may be drawn through the roll on a line in the same horizontal plane with the axis thereof, or in a plane above or below the horizontal plane of the axisas may be found practical and convenient.

Still another object resides in the specific arrangement and combination of parts as herein illustrated and set forth.

Other objects of my invention will be apparent from the following description considered in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein I have illustrated one practical and specific embodiment of my invention, which embodiment I have found in practice to give good results.

Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation illustrating the device of my invention as applied to a roll paper rack of the usual type, the latter being shown in dotted outline to avoid confusion. Fig. 2 s an end elevation of the device shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation, on the line 3-8 of Fig. 1.

In detail, the device, as shown, comprises the member 1 which is attached by means of cleats 2 to the top cross piece of a frame 3 which supports a shaft a carrying a web of paper 5 in roll form, the upright member 6 of the frame 3 being provided with feet 7 which are secured to a base 8 by any suitable means such as the screws 9, the frailne and uprights constituting the roll rac On the forward edge of the member 1 are eye members 10 through which the shaft 11 extends, the shaft 11 having a horizontally extending length substantially equal to the length of the member 1 and each end thereof being bent over at right angles to the horizontal portion and arcuately curved in an inward direction toward the roll 5.

In order to hold the attachment in proper relation with respect to the surface of the roll 5, a coil spring 12 is provided, one end 13 of which is fixed to the member 1, whereas the'other end 1 1 is extended and engages the adjacent curved end of the shaft 11, thus at all times exerting a tension on the shaft which serves to contact the device with the paper roll 5.

The major portion of the device is suspended on the depending curved end por ing composed of side members 16 and the top and bottom members 17 and 18 respectively, the bottom member 18 being cut away on its forward edge at substantially the center thereof as shown at 19; thus when the end of the web of paper contained on a roll 5 covers the bottom member 18 as shown at 20 in Fig. 3, the paper may be grasped to draw a length thereof from the roll 5.

Between the top and bottom members 17 and 18 and parallel therewith is a member 21, the purpose of which will be hereinafter specifically set forth.

The frame 15 is provided on each side with members 22 through which the downwardly extending members or ends of the shaft 11 extend, and thus the entire frame is adjustable on these curved ends of the shaft 11, and it may therefore be raised or lowered depending on the size of the roll and on the existing conditions, the frame being retained in an adjusted. position by 5 means of the thumb screws 23 threaded into member 24 which is carriedin clips 25 and 25", these clips being mounted on the side members16 and the latter clip 25 being pivoted as at 26 and secured with a thumb screw 27, thus permitting it to be loosened,so as to- 5 remove the said member 24 should it become necessary.

Below the member 21 and carried by the side members 16' are tracks 28, in which are guided the vertical members 29 and which carry a knife member 30 coextensive in length with-the width of the paper roll 5 and movable horizontally with respect to the bottom member 18. In'orderto press the knife member 30 and the'spur roller 3l against the paper a ten= sion device is provided, and this comprises ,the transversely extending hook arms 32 of a U-shaped member 33, the base portion of which is journaled in eyelets 34 carried by the member 21. These arms are underthe influence of tensio'n exerted by a spring 35 ;having one end fixed to the member 21 and the other end in'engagement with one of the arms 32. For this purpose I have arranged on'the member 21 a member 38 which is journaledat 39 and is so curved as to engage the sidebars of the rectangular member 36. This member 38 is provided with a hand lever 40 and when the hand lever is pulled toward the operator (in the direction'of the arrow in Fig. 3) the knife member 30 and roller 31 are returned to the initial starting position, thereby leaving an exposed length of paper 20 on the bottom member 18,- and m withdrawing a further length of paper from the roll this end provides a convenient means of grasping the free end of the web.

In the foregoing description, and in the drawings, I have set forth one practical embodiment of my invention for the purpose of illustrating the principles thereof; it is, however, evident that variations and modifications may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of my im ention as set-forth inthe appended claims.

I claim:

1. A paper holding andcutting attachment for roll paper racks comprising, means for securing the attachment to the rack,

means for guiding the paper during unwinding travel, a cutting member movable to a severing position and to a position to expose and hold a-short unwound length of paper to be grasped in withdrawing an additional length of paper, and a tension device to press said cutting member against the paper whereby an even severed edge is obtained, substantially as described.

2. A paper holding and cutting attachment for roll paper racks comprising, means for securing the attachment to the rack, means for guiding the-paper during unwinding travel, a cutting member movable to and from a cutting position, and means for guiding the cutting member during such movement and to compensate for paper of'different thicknesses, substantially as described.

3. A paper holding and cutting attachment for roll paper racks comprising, means for securing the attachment to the rack, a cutting member movable to and from a cutting position, a tension device to press said cutting member against the paper, and manual means for returning said cutting member to the normal starting position to expose a short unwound length of paper to be grasped in withdrawing an additional length of paper from the rack, substantially as described.

A paper holding and cutting attachment for roll paper racks comprising, means for securing the attachment to the rack, spring means for maintaining the attachment in contact with the paper on the roll, and a cutting member movable into a severing position and into a position -to expose a short unwound length of paper to be grasped in subsequently withdrawing an additional length of paper from the rack, substantially as described.

5. A paper holding and cutting attach- 130 ment for roll paper racks comprising, a supporting structure attachable to the rack, a frame structure adjustable in a horizontal plane and including a cutting member movable by engagement with the paper into a severing position, and means for guiding said cutting member during movement and to compensate for difierent thicknesses of paper, substantially as described.

The combination in a paper holding and cutting attachment,.of a frame, a knife member movably mounted in said frame, a spur roller for engagement with the paper during unwinding travel of the latter and connected with the knife member to move the latter into a severing position, manual means for Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D.
