Description

I. A. IVIANLEY.
PLOW. I APPLICATION FILED AUG.27| I9I2.
Patented. July 11, 1916.

IIVILAI-I A. MANLEY, OF CANON, GEORGIA, ASSIGNOR TO WORLEY ADAMS, 0F ROYSTON, GEORGIA.
PLOW.
Application filed August 27, 1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IMLAI-I A. MANLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canon, in the county of Franklin and State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Plows, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to plows, and it has for its object to provide simple and of ficient means whereby the plow foot may be adjusted so as to present the blade at varlous angles with respect to the surface of the ground.
A further object of the invention is to produce a lever of simple and improved construction, whereby the plow foot may be actuated and retained at various adjustments, said lever having arms on whlch segment racks by adjusting the plow foot may be secured, and said arms being extend ed beyond the rack segments to gulde the plow foot.
With these and other ends in view wh ch will readily appear as the nature of the 1nvention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and par ticularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited,
but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claim may be resorted to when desired.
In the. drawing,Figure 1 is a side elevation of a plow constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation taken on the line 22 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the adjusting lever detached.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of wt erence.
The plow beam 1 is provided with the usual handles 2 whereby it may be guided. The plow foot F is composed of two bars or side members 3, 3 which are positioned adjacent to opposite sides of the beam with which they are pivotally connected by means of a belt or pivot member 4. The lower end of the foot supports the ground engaging blade 5,. The upper forward ends of the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 11, rare.
Serial No. 717,337.
side bars 3 are formed with arcuate racks 6 which are concentric with the axis of the pivot member 4.
The lever L whereby the plow foot is adj usted and retained at various angles is comnosed of two bars or side members 7, the lower ends of which are spaced apart, as shown, said side members being provided intermediate their upper and lower ends with shoulders or offsets 8 whereby the upper ends of the side members are positioned closer together, as shown, to form a han- (lie 9. The lower extremities of the side members 7 are provided with lugs or arms 10 which extend rearwardly with respect to the pivot member 11 whereby the lever is fulcrumed on the plow beam. Firmly secured upon the inner faces of the side members 7 and arms 10 of the lever L are segmental rack plates 12 that mesh with the rack segments 6 of the plow foot, thus enabling the latter to. be adjusted about the axis of the pivot 4 by means of the lever 11. Said lever is provided with a spring actuated latch 18 of well known construction, said latch engaging a rack segment 14 which is mounted on the plow beam, thus enabling the plow foot to be secured in any position to which it may be adjusted.
The rack plates 12 which are secured on the limbs or side members of the lever L will be held very firmly, being secured not only to the limbs, but also to the rearwardly extending lugs or arms 10. Should said rack plates break, they may be easily replaced at a trifling expense.
It will be noted that the lugs or arms 10 are made of suflicient length to overlap the rack segments 6 of the plow foot, thereby securely holding said segments against lateral displacement which would interfere with the operation of the plow, and thus providing an extremely simple and durable, as well as inexpensive, construction.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
In a device of the class described, the combination with a plow beam and a plow standard pivoted thereon, said standard having side members positioned adjacent to opposite sides of the beam, and said side members being provided with segment racks at their front ends, of a bifurcated lever straddling the beam and extending upwardly therefrom, said lever having limbs provided ber extending through the beam and through with rearwardly extending arms, a pivot memthe first mentioned rack segments, fastening means whereby the last mentioned rack segments are secured upon the limbs and arms of the lever, and-means for retaining the lever and related parts at various adnotched bar.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
IMLAH A. MANLEY.
