UNITED NSTATES PATENT QEEICE.
MARSHALL HARRISON, OF LAOLEDE, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF ANI) JEFFERSON MIZE, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CUTTING APPARATUS FOR HARVESTERS.
Specication' forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,029, dated September 19, 1871.
To allwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARSHALL HARRISON, of
y Laclede, in the countyjof Linn and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cutter-Bar for Reapers and Mowers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilledI in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming partof this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a top view of my improved cutterbar, the top plate deing removed. Fig. 2 is a detail cross-section of the same taken through the line :v .'10, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. i
My invention consists in improving the means by which harvester-cutters are operated, as hereinafter fully described and subsequently pointed out in the claim.
A is the bottom plate, having ribs al a2 a3 thereon, and B is the top plate. D G is a series of cutters. F are guards, and B is the movable cutter-bar,- to which the cutters D are pivoted. These cutters are also pivoted to the fixed rib a2,
on which they vibrate in a horizontal plane. In
my invention the rear ends of the movable cutters D are pivoted to a supplementary spacingbar, C. The object of this is to connect the series of cutters in such a manner that, if either one of the pivots by which they are connected to the sliding bar B and stationary rib a2 should give way, the operation of the tooth will not be prevented but allowed to go on as usual. In this way many of the usual stoppages in cutting, by which all the hands that follow the harvester are delayed in their work, are entirely obviated.
Having thus described all that is necessary to a full understanding of my invention, what I esteem to be new and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the bottom plate A al a2 a3, top plate E, and a series of cutters, D, pivoted tobar B, and fulcrumed to rib a?, the supplementary bar G, to which the rear ends of all the Vcutters are pivoted, as and for the purpose specified.
MARSHALL HARRISON.
