T 0 all 10 [tom it may concern Be it known that I, HARRY M. GOODING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Attica, in the county of Seneca and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Scarifier, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is a scarifier adapted to be used for the purpose of breaking up a crust which not infrequently forms above crops, after the same has been planted, thereby preventing, in some instances, the crops from making a proper initial growth.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is not a cultivator, strictly speaking, in that it does not break up the soil to any appreciable depth but merely loosens any crust which may be formed on the surface of the soil.
The invention aims to provide novel means for mounting the teeth of the scarifier for adjustment with respect to the ground and to provide novel means for effecting the adjustment above mentioned.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
\Vith the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing fromthe spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing :Figure 1 shows in side elevation, a scarifier constructed in accordance with the present invention, parts appearing in section; Fig. 2 is a top plan.
In carrying out the present invention there is provided an axle l carrying ground wheels 2. Disposed above the axle 1 and supported thereon intermediate its ends, by means of bearings at is a platform 3. The
a platform 3 carries upstanding brackets 5 on which are rotatably mounted the ends (3 of a shaft 7 secured as indicated at 8 to a tongue 9 carrying a hanger 10 supporting a frame embodying front bars 11 held together by bolts 12, rear bars 14 held together by bolts 15, side bars 16 connecting the front bars with the rear bars, and top bars 17 uniting the front bars with the rear bars, the top bars being held tothe front and rear bars by means of bolts 18.
Strong bowed springs 19 are provided, the lower ends of the springs 19 being attachedas shown at 20 to the ends of the top bars 17 of the supplemental frame above described, the upper ends of the springs 19 being secured as shown at 21 to the shaft 7. Secured to the rear end of the tongue 9 and constituting to all intents and purposes a part thereof is an upwardly inclined loop 22, the loop 22 being held to the rear end of the tongue 9 by means of the bolt 8 or in any other suitable manner.
The invention comprises a crank shaft 24: journaled for rotation in bearings 25 on the platform 3, the axis of rotation of the crank shaft 2% being located above and in front of the axis of the axle 1. Secured to one end of the crank shaft 2% is a lever 26 carrying a latch 27 of any desired sort, adapted to cooperate with a segment 28 secured to the platform 3.
The invention comprises a plurality of teeth 29 connected with the supplemental frame hercinbefore mentioned, the teeth 29 being more or less resilient and being of curvilinear form. In the rearmost bars 11 and 14. of the supplemental frame, recesses 30 are formed, the same receiving hooks 31 formed on the upper ends of the teeth 29, there being pivot elements extended across the recesses 30 and receiving the hooks 31. The teeth 29 pass through reinforcing bars 33. Braces 34- are secured at their upper ends as shown at 35, to the bars 11 and 1a and are attached by means of securing elements 36 adjustably, to the reinforcing bars 33. Owing to the cooperation between the braces 34: and the reinforcing bars 33, these elements may be moved longitudinally of the teeth 29, thereby to affect the resiliency of the teeth.
The springs 19 serve to force the teeth 29 downwardly into the ground, and as the vehicle is drawn over the surface of the soil, a crust formed on the surface of the soil will be broken up, for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
It is possible to raise and lower the supplemental frame and the teeth 29 with respect to the soil, this operation being brought about by swinging the crank shaft :24 through the medium of the lever 26. hen the latch 27 is engaged with the segment 28, the loop-shaped crank shaft 24 acts as a secure connection between the loop 22 of the tongue 9 and the platform 3, a rigid construction thus being brought about, and the construction being such that the teeth 29 will be held in adjusted positions with respect to the soil.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. In a device of the class described, a
' wheel mounted platform; a tongue; a compression spring having its rear end assembled with the tongue; a supplemental, toothcarrying frame pivotally assembled with the tongue and engaged by the compression spring; a crank shaft mounted to swing on the platform and engaged with the rear end of the tongue; a lever operatively connected with the crank shaft; latch mechanism on the lever; and means on the platform wherewith the latch mechanism coacts.
2. In a device of the class described, a wheel mounted platform; a shaft having its ends journaled in the platform; a tongue secured to the shaft; a supplemental, toothcarrying frame pivoted to the tongue; an
arched compression spring extended between the shaft and the supplemental frame; a loop carried by the rear end of the tongue; a crankshaft mounted to swing on the platform and engaged withthe loop; a lever connected with the crank shaft, and means coacting with the platform and with the lever for holding the crank shaft in adjusted positions.
3. In a device of the class described, a wheel mounted platform; brackets carried by the platform; a shaft having its ends journaled in the brackets; a tongue connected with the shaft; a tooth carrying frame pivotally suspended from the tongue; an arched compression spring extended between the shaft and the supplemental frame; and platform carried means operatively connected with the rear end of the tongue to effect a raising and a lowering of the tongue and the supplemental frame.
