To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ARTHUR Barns, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Leicester, in the county of Leicester, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in iVork-Support-Operating Mechanism; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact de scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which 1t appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to machines for operating around the marginal portions of the bottoms of shoes of the class in which the shoe is supported upon a rotatable work support or horn. I
The object of the invention is to improve the construction and operation oi'machines of this class with a view of assisting the operator in the presentation of the shoe to the operating devices. I
With the above object in view, a feature of the invention comprises the combination in a machine-for performing successive operations around the marginal portions of the bottoms of shoes of a rotatable work support or horn, and mechanism that assists the operator to turn the work support when the toe or other curved part of the shoe is to be operated upon. Conveniently the arrangement is such that the said mechanism is brought automatically into operation when the work support is turned manually to bring the curved part of the boot into position to be operated upon. The said mechanism may comprise a mutilated friction wheel that is operatively connected with the work support and is .adapted to be driven by a constantly rotating friction wheel.
The present application is a division of application Serial No. 633,750, filed June 20th, 1911, upon which Patent No. 1,080,879, dated December 9, 1913, was granted.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a ide elevation, partly in section, of a sewing machine embodying the'present invention in its preferred form; Fig. 2 is a detail view, in front'elevation, of the mechanism for assisting in the turning of the horn; and Fig. '3 is a detail plan view of the mechanism illustrated in Fig. 2.
The invention has been illustrated as embodied in a machine for sewing the sole of Serial No. 703,485.
' boots and shoes, but it must be clearly unof the well-known McKay type, comprising a rotatable work support or horn 1 for supporting the shoe in position of presentation to the vertically reciprocating straight hook needle 2, which during its work-piercing stroke is projected through the Work into operative position with relation to the looper located in the horn tip. The work is fed forward over the upper surfaceof the horn by afeed point or awl both the needle and awl are actuated by suitable connections from the main shaft 3 of the machine. The horn is arranged to move vertically to accommodate varying thicknesses of work, and a stationary abutment 4 1s provided against which the horn clamps the work during such times as the stitch is in process of formation. In order to permit the horn to move vertically in the frame, the horn is provided with an extension 5 arranged to move in suitable guides in the frame. A sleeveG is mounted 011 the extension of the horn and is connected by means of a link 7 with a treadle lever 8. The connection between the sleeve 6 and the horn is such as to permit the horn to turn with relation to the sleeve, but to compel it to move vertically therewith. The sleeve 6 may be connected with the extension 5 of the horn in any convenient way as by one or more screws or pins 6 threaded'into the sleeve 6, the inner ends of which engage a groove in the extension 5. The rear end of the treadle lever is connected with a vertically extending rod 9, and a spring 10 coiled about the rod andengaging a lug on the frame, tends to maintain the horn in'its uppermost position. The upper end'of the rod 9 is-connected with the needle actuating mechanism which is constructed and arranged'to vary the downward stroke of the needle in accordance with changesin the vertical position of the horn due to the changes in the thickness of the work. Since the said mechanism forms no part of the present invention, no detailed description thereof is made in this application.

In order to assist the operator in the presentation of the work to the sewing devices, means are provided for turning the horn 1 when the toe portion or other sharply curved portions are being dealt with. In the construction herein illustrated these means comprise a friction wheel 11 which is driven from the main shaft 3 of the machine and is adapted to engage with a companion wheel 12 upon the extension 5 of the horn 1. The wheel 11 is mounted on a shaft 13 in a manner as hereinafter described, the said shaft being held in bearings on the machine frame and receiving motion from the main shaft 3 by the following means :On the shaft 18 is a pulley 14 around which a belt 15 is passed, the said belt also; passing around another pulley 16 secured upon a transverse shaft 17 mounted upon the machine frame. The shaft 17 is also provided with a bevel wheel 18 in gear with another bevel wheel 19 secured on a Vertical shaft 20 mounted in bearings upon the machine frame. At the upper end of the shaft 20 is another bevel wheel (not shown) in gear with a bevel wheel secured upon the main shaft 3. The companion wheel 12 has a friction surface 21 which is incomplete and only extends partially around the circumference. The acting surface of this wheel is so disposed in relation to the horn 1 that when the horn is turned into the position it occupies when the toe of the boot is sewn the said friction surface 21 will be brought into engagement with the friction wheel 11 that is driven from the main shaft so that the horn will be rotated until the two friction surfaces are again disengaged and the sewing around the toe has been completed.
Since the extension 5 from the horn is mounted so as to be capable of rotation and endwise movement in brackets extending from the machine frame, it is necessary that some device be provided to maintain the friction surface 21 of the wheel 12 in cooperative relation with the friction wheel 11 notwithstanding this vertical movement of the horn. As shown in the drawings this is accomplished by mounting the friction wheel 11 on the shaft 13 in such a manner that while it is restrained from rotary movement in relation thereto it will be free to move longitudinally of the shaft to the extent necessary to compensate for the vertical movement of the horn. To cause the friction wheel 11 to move vertically with the horn, flanges 22 are provided on the wheel, which flanges embrace each face of the wheel 12.
It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to any particular machine for operating about the marginal portions of the bottoms of boots and shoes, or to any particular construction or arrangement of parts.
Having explained the nature and object of the invention, and having described a machine embodying the same in its preferred form, what is claimed is:
1. In a machine for operating around the marginal portions of the bottoms of shoes, a work supporting horn arranged for free rotation except when the toe portion of the shoe is operated upon, and mechanism operated by the machine thrown into operation during each rotation of the horn and acting to assist the operator in turning the horn when operating about the toe of a shoe.
2. In a machine for operating around the marginal portions of the bottoms of shoes, a work supporting horn arranged for free rotation except when the toe portion of the shoe is operated upon, and mechanism thrown into operation by the turning movement of the horn and tending to rotate the horn to assist the operator in turning the horn when operating about the toe of a shoe.
8. In a machine for operating around the marginal portions of the bottoms of shoes, a work supporting horn arranged for free rotation except when the toe portion of a shoe is operated upon, and a frictional driving mechanism thrown into operation during each rotation of the horn, tending to turn the horn while the toe portion of the shoe is being operated upon, and permitting the turning movement to be controlled by the operator.
4. In a machine for operating around the marginal portions of the bottoms of shoes, a rotatable work supporting horn, a mutilated friction wheel connected to the horn and a friction driving wheel arranged to engage the mutilated wheel and assist the operator in turning the horn while the toe portion of the shoe is being operated upon.
5. In a machine for operating around the marginal portions of the bottoms of shoes, a rotatable work supporting horn arranged for free rotation except when a certain portion of the margin of a shoe is being operated upon, and means tending to rotate the horn to assist the operator in turning the horn thrown into operation automatically during each operation of the machine about the shoe bottom.
