To all whom it may concern Latch Mechanisms; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference-numerals marked thereon.

Another and further purpose of my invention is to'reduce to a minimum the number of indiv'dual and separate elements re-v quired in a structure of this character, and to correlate them insuch a way as to make it possible to manufacture the device at a reasonably small cost, at the same time affording an arrangement which can be readily assembled or disassembled, and in which the parts are not likely to in any way in which the bolt can get out of order.

The mechanism attached to the door is arranged within a housing 5, and includes acylindrical hollow bolt 6. The bolt includes a frame 7 which carriesa projection 8'for a purpose that will appear presently. The latch member; is designated at 9, being movable within the cylindrical bolt 6, and it lII-j cludesa plate 10, slidable within the sides of the frame 7 and supported in recesses 11 formed between the upper and lower lugs or flanges 23 of the-frame 7 as shown in Fig. 7, while the which rests upon the floor of the housing and maintains the parts in proper relation.

the bolt happens to be in its inner position, upon closing the door, the latch will be moved inwardly, as already described, to release the bolt which is thereupon moved to its outer position by a spring 18 mounted on V the post 19 and engaging a wall of the housing and a pin 20 on the bolt frame; and when the bolt is in its outermost or locked position, provision is made for releasing the locking device or detent 14 by inward movement of the latch through an actuator that I will describe more fully a little later.
The locking device or detent 14 cooperates on opposite sides of the projection 8 for retaining the bolt. Thus when it is on one side of the projection 8, it holds the bolt in its outer position, as in Fig. 4, and when on the opposite side, it retains the bolt in its inner position, as in Fig.2. The latch member is held in its normal position through the action ofa spring 21 mounted on the afore mentioned post 19 with one end in engagement with the latch member and the opposite I end in engagement with the pin 15 of the detent, causing the latch member to be actuated under normal conditions to the position shown in Figs. 2 and 4. The actuator forinsertionof a proper key, the actuator will be turned to release the bolt 6. To this end,

Upon the initial movement of the actuator, one of the cam surfaces 26 engages a pin 12, moving the latch member inwardly far enough to release the locking device from engagement withthe bolt, while its further movement causes the bolt to be moved by engagement of the actuator with the flanges 23 on the bolt frame, as shown in Fig. 5. other side of the door without the aid of a key bya correspondingly formed actuator 28 which is connected to and operated-by a handle in the form of a knurled head 29 arranged on the outside of the housing. The operation of the structure may be described briefly as follows: With the parts in normal position, as shown in Fig. 2, the bolt being in its inner position, upon closing the door the latch 9 is forced inwardly, releasing the locking device from engagement with the bolt frame after which both the latch member and bolt are moved outwardly by their respective springs, and the bolt is locked in its outer position by the'detent 14. The lock may be opened either from the outside through the key controlled tumbler lock mechanism, or from the inside by turning the handle 29, initially causing inward movement of the latch member, and'thereby moving the lockingdevice or detent 14' out of engagement with the bolt frame, after which the bolt is free to be moved to its innermost position by continued turning of the actuator,'and the parts are then in the position shown in Fig. 2 ready for another operation.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination with a hollow locking bolt, of a latch member movable within the bolt, and means controlled by the latch member acting to retain the bolt in its inner or outer position. i A

The combination with a hollow cylindrical locking. bolt, of a cylindrical latch member movable within the bolt, and a looking device arranged to engage the bolt and retain it in position, the latch member acting, during its initial inward movement, to release the locking device and permit movement of the bolt. i
3. The combination with a hollow locking bolt, of a latch member movable within the bolt, means controlled by the'latch member acting to retain the bolt in its'in'ner or outer position, and a stop adapted to be adjusted into the path of the' bolt to prevent 4. The combination with a hollow locking bolt, of a latch member movable within the bolt, a locking device arranged to engage said bolt and retain it in either its inner or outer position, the latch member having a pin and slot connection with the locking device whereby the latter is removed from engagement with the boltupon inward movement of the latch member.
