Description
EMMETT MATHER.
Improvement-in Coal Scuttles. Q
No. 118,807. Patented Sep. 12,1871.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
EMMETT MATHER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO FRANK STURGES &
' (30., OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT lN COAL-SCUTTLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,807, dated September 12, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMMETT MATHER, of the city of Chicago, county of Cook and State of 11- linois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ooal-Hods; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side View of my improved coalhod with a portion of the body broken off, and Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in both figures of the drawing.
My invention relates to the construction of coal-hods; and consists in stamping or setting down the bottom upon the hoop of one and the same piece of metal, and throwing ofi' therefrom an annular flange,by which the said bottom and hoop are united to the body of the hod by doubleseaming them together.
In the drawing, A represents a portion of the body of a coal-hod; B, the bottom, and O the hoop, upon and to which the body rests and is firmly attached. I construct the bottom B and hoop O of one and the same piece of metal, by
stamping or setting down the bottom upon the hoop and throwing off therefrom an annular edge or flange, as shown at a. I also construct the bottom edge of the body with a corresponding flange, as shown at b, and then unite the bottom and hoop with the body by double-seaming the said flanges together, as shown at d, and which forms a water-tight joint.
By this construction of a coal-hod I am enabled to make it stronger and more durable than coal-hods in ordinary use, not liable to leak, nor of having the bottom drop out from the weight of the coal contained therein.
Having thus described the nature and object of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Stamping or setting down the bottom and hoop of a coal-hod with the annular flange a, of one and the same piece of metal, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. Uniting the body to the bottom and hoop by double-seaming, when said bottom and hoop are made from one and the same piece of metal, substantially asspecified.
EMMETT MATHER.
