Description
ASA A. WESTCOTT lmp rovement in Steps fo r Spindles of Spinning-Machines.
PatentedSep. 5.1871.
a M A J, f if 21 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ASA A. WESTCOTT, OF NORTH SOITUATE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO GEORGE DRAPER, OF HOPEDALE, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN STEPS FOR SPINDLES OF SPINNING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,763, dated September 5, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AsA A. WESTCOTT, of North Scituate, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have made a new and use ful invention having reference to the Spindles of Spinning-Frames or Machinery; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawing, of which Figure l is a front elevation, and Fig. 2 a vertical section of a spinning-spindle with my invention applied to it, and its bolster and step-rails.
The nature of the invention consists in the combination and arrangement, substantially as hereinafter explained, of a movable step-post applied to its snpportingrail, as hereinafter described, with the spindle, the whirl, the bolster, and the supporting-rail. of the latter, arranged as shown; the object of the said invention being to shorten the spindle and enable it to be readily removed from or introduced into the bolster and step, as occasion may require.
In the drawing, A denotes the spindle; B, the whirl; C, the ring 5 D, the ring-rail; E, the bolster; F, the bolster-rail; G, the step-post; and H, its supporting-rail. The pivot a or foot of the spindle enters within or has a bearing, 1), in the top or upper part of the step-post or standard G. This step post, at its base or lower part, is extended into a socket, 0, made through the steprail H, and with a diameter larger than that of the post. The said post is fastened in the steprail by means of a clamp-screw, (I, screwed laterally into the rail and against the post. On loosening the said screw the post may be moved downward through and out of the rail H, so as to allow the spindle to be drawn down entirely out of the bolster.
By means of the post extended up from and applied to the lower rail H, in manner as described and shown, there is saved the necessity of extending the spindle down, or nearly down, to the said rail, as it has been customary heretofore to do, the spindle, when so extended, being supported in a short step fixed in or to the rail. With my invention the spindle is not so liable to vibrate as it will be when extended nearly down to the lower rail. Besides, with my said invention the Whirl becomes located very close to the step and bolster, and, as a consequence, the chance of the spindle oscillating or vibrating while in use is very little.
I make no claim to the spindle as extended nearly down to the step-rail.
What I claim as my invention or improvement 1s The combination and arrangement of the movable step-post Gr, constructed and applied to its supporting-rail H and spindle A, as described, and extending up nearly to the bolster-rail, with the said spindle, the whirl, the bolster, and the supportingrail of the latter all disposed as ex plained and represented, the said post being provided at its upper end or part with a socket or hearing to receive the foot or pivot of the spindle, essentially as hereinbefore explained.
ASA A. VVESTOOTT.
