PIN-HOLDING DEVICE.
Application filed September 13, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN B. BARLOW, a citizen of the United States, residing at lValker township, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pin-Holding Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to pin-holding' devices, and its object is to provide such a device which shall hold in convenient position the ordinary pins intended for domestic use and in the paper strip into which such pins are thrust as the same are usually furnished to the user. This object is attained by, and the invention finds preferable em-' bodiment in, the device hereinafter described and illustrated. by the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view of my device; Fig. 2 is an end view of the same; Fig. 3 is an end view of a modification thereof; Fig. 4: is an end view of the holder for holding a pincarrying strip; and Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view in perspective of a modification thereof.
A holder 1 adapted to hold a strip, 2 of the paper into which the pins 3 are thrust, as the same are usually furnished to the purchaser or user, comprises in the constructions shown a pair of members 4: preferably of rigid material as metal. The lower edges of these members are preferably hingedly connected at 5, as by a flexible material 6, such as cloth or felt, which extends upwardly on the inner or adjacent sides of such members. This material is preferably soft and yielding in order to more securely retain the paper strip and the pins thrust therein.
The members 4: of the holder 1 are opened as shown in Fig. 4 and a paper strip 2 of pins is inserted between them. On closing the members 4 together, the holder 1 is slid lengthwise into a suitable slot 7 in a base or support 8, the heads of the pins projecting above the upper surface of such base and being thus in convenient position to the drawn out for use. Mutually engaging portions of the holder and base are preferably provided to retain the holder in the slot against movement other than that by which it is slid into and out of the slot. Such portions may consist of the longitudinal rib 9 on the holder and the corresponding groove 10 in one side of the slot as shown. A spring 11 may be attached as by the rivet 12 to one side of the Specification of Letters Patent.

holder in order to press such holder against the opposite side of the slot, thus more securely retaining the holder and the pins in place.
A piece of suitable material 14, as cork, may be let into the top of the base to serve as a pin-cushion, and the space 13 between two holders 1 may be utilized as a pen rack.
The invention being intended to be defined solely by the claims, is not to be limited to or by the construction shown or described.
I claim:
1. In a device of the character described; a holder adapted to claspingly hold a pincarrying strip; and a base having a slot therein adapted to receive and hold said holder.
2. In a device of the character described; a holder comprising a pair of cooperating members adapted to hold a pin-carrying strip between them; and a base having a slot therein adapted to receive and hold said holder.
3. In a device of the character described; a holder comprising a pair of cooperating members hingedly connected and adapted to hold a pin-carrying strip between them; and a base having a slot therein adapted to receive and hold said holder.
4. In a device of the character described; a holder comprising a pair of coiiperating members lined on their adjacent sides with a yielding material, and adapted to hold a pin-carrying strip between them; and a base having a slot therein adapted to receive and hold said holder.
5. In a device of the character described; a holder adapted to claspingly hold a pincarrying strip: and a base having a slot therein adapted to receive and hold said holder; the holder and base having mutually engaging portions adapted to hold the holder against movement in the slot in one direction and to permit its sliding movement therein in another direction.
6. In a device of the character described; a holder comprising a pair of cooperating members adapted to hold a pin-carrying strip between them; a base having a slot therein adapted to receive and hold said holder; and a spring adapted to press the holder against a side of the slot.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
JOHN B. BARLOW.
