HANS L. BOOTH, OF BLACK HAWK, SOUTH DAKOTA.
ABM-REST.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 14, 1914. Serial No. 877,157.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HANS L. Roorrr, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Black Hawk, in the county of Meade and State of South Dakota have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Arm-Rests, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in arm rests or supports for the use of riflemen or others requiring a steady arm in the exercise of their vocation.
The object is to provide an improved arm rest or support designed for convenient attachment to the users body and that will not interfere with the free movement of the users arm.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described in the following specification, pointed out in the claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part of said specification and in which Figure 1 is a perspectiveview of one embodiment of my improved arm rest. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side view of the inner face of one of the adjusting disks and a portion of the arm channel. Fig. 4: is a vertical sectional view through the adjusting disks. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of one adjusting disk with the connecting rivet and locking pawl removed. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the locking pawl. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the modification of the arm rest. Fig. 8 is a front view of the same folded. Fig. 9 is a side view of Fig. 8.
Like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the first six figures of the drawings, the reference numeral 1 designates a post, adapted to be secured to the body by straps 2, and which terminates at its upper end in a circular disk or rack 3 provided with teeth 4 formed upon one face.
The rack 3 is pivotally carried upon the rivet 5 which connects it to the adjusting disk 6 formed with a square opening 8 through which the shank 9, square in cross section, of locking pawl 10 is removably disposed; said pawl being provided with a spring 11 which serves to keep its working end-in engagement with the teeth of the rack 3. The adjusting disk 8 is made integral with the arm channel 12 longitudinally of which the arm of the user may rest.
The arm channel is adjustable in a vertical plane and to adjust the same the locking pawl is drawn away from the adjusting disk 6 until the shank 9 leaves the square open portion 8; the pawl is now turned half way around or until the beveled end of the same will travel freely over the teeth 4 of the rack 3, the rack and adjusting disk may now be adjusted with relation to each other and the pawl then turned back to original position with the beveled point at right angles to the teeth a: and the rest will be locked in adjusted position.
Referring to Figs. 7, 8 and 9 the post 1 is secured to the body in the same manner as post 1 and it terminates at one end in ears 13 through which the pivot 14. passes that carries the bar 16 upon which the users arm may freely rest. The bar 16 is connected to the post 1 by the hinged link 15 which, when extended, will retain said bar and post in extended position.
What is claimed is 1. An arm rest comprising a post adapt ed to be strapped to the body of the user, an adjusting disk terminally carried by said post, a circular rack, pivotal connection between said rack and adjusting disk, means connecting said adjusting disk and circular rack for releasably locking them in adjusted position with relation to each other and an arm channel carried by said circular rack.
2. An arm rest comprising a post adapted to be strapped to the body of the user, an integral adjusting disk for said post, said disk being formed with a square opening in its face, a rack pivotally connected to said adjusting disk and having its teeth arranged in a circle the circumference of which is in the plane of the square opening in said adjusting disk, and a spring-pressed locking pawl carried by said adjusting disk and having its square shank normally disposed in the square opening in said disk.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afiiXed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HANS L. BOOTH.
