Description

C. R. LAW.
TONGS.
APPLICATION men AUG-6., m5.
Patented J 1111B 13, 1916.
Inventor 4 Witnesses I NJ 4 76K79vm tw w e n r. O t A CHARLES R. LAW, OF MANSFIELQILOUISIANA.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES R. LAW, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Mansfield, in the parish of De Soto and btate of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful. Tongs, of which the following. is a specification. i
This invention relates to tongs such as chain tongs, etc., one of the objects being to provide tongs having all of the advantages of casing and tool joint tongs, such as used primarily in the construction of oil wells and for like purposes.
A further object is toprovide an attachment for ordinary pipe tongs whereby the same tool can be used as casing tongs.
With the foregoing and other objects in view. which will appear; as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit'of the invention. In the accompanying drawings, the preferred forms of the invention have been shown. g
In said drawings :Figure.1 is aside elevation of pipe tongs of ordinary construction having combined therewith an attachment whereby the same can be used as casing tongs. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the attachment and showing the grip block. in elevation. Fig. 3 is an end view of the attachment, the grip block be ing removed. Fig. 4: is a section on line A.-B Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the grip block, a part being shown in section. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of a modified form of tongs.
Referring to the'figures by characters of reference l'designates the head of pipe tongs of any standard form, the same having op-' usual manner. In order to adapt these tongs for use in casing tongs, an attachment such as shown in Figs. 2 to 5 inclusive may be employed. This attachment includes a member in the form of a sleeve 5 adapted to fit snugly over the jaws of the head 1, the ing TONGS.
terior of the sleeve being tapered toward one Patented June 13, 1916.. Application filed August 6, 1915.. Serial No. 44,058. i
end so that the jaws willfitgproperly therein and the small end of the sleeve being open to permit the chain 4 to extend therethrough. This sleeve is open at both ends and at one side and isprovided within the large end portion thereof, with parallel webs 6 extending -fromthe open side to the closed side of thesleeve and forming spaces 7 for the reception of the jaws of the tongs and an intermediate space 8 for the reception of the chain. Inwardly extended flanges 9 are formed along the open side of the sleeve for engaging the jaws and holding the sleeve against lateral displacement relative thereto.
Formed in opposed. faces of the sleeve are threaded openings 10 for the reception of set screws 11, these set screws being adapted to bind upon opposite sides of the head 1, thus to fasten the sleeve securely to the'head.
Formed in the closed side of the sleeve close to the small end thereof is a transverse upon the back of a grip block 16. This grip block is curved from one end to the other and is provided, on its concave face with transverse teeth or serrations 17, adapted to' engage a casing being turned by means of the tongs.
Obviously by loosening the screws 11, the sleeve 5 can be detached readily from the tongs and said tongs used as ordinary pipe tongs. I
Instead of providing pipe tongs with an attachment such as described, it is to be understood that, if preferred, and as shown in 'Fig. 6, the tongs can be provided with the usual toothed jaw 18 at one side of the mem ber or head 19, while at the other side of said member or head may be provided outstanding ears 20 to which a block 21 corresponding with block 16 may be pivotally connected in the manner hereinbefore pointed out. Thus without providing an attachment, the one tool can be used as ordinary pipe tongs and as casing tongs.
Obviously various changes in the arrangement and proportions of the parts can be made to adapt the attachment herein dedifferent shapes and sizes, Withoutdepartscribed for use in connection with tongs of ing from the spirit of the invention.
1 Importance is attached to the fact that the bearing rib 14 engages the Wall of the chanmil or groove 12 so that said Wall thus re- -ceives all of the strain exerted through the block 16 andthe screw of pin merely operates to hold the parts together.
It Will be noted that the pivot member 15 is removable so that it is'thus possible to remove the grip blocks readily. Consequently,
grip blocks of different sizescan be used in connection with the attachment.
that When the device is'used', the block Will grip an object at one point While the chain will grip the object at opposed points and in the same plane;
What is claimed is 1. In chain tongs, a member, a chain ex-.
tending at one end into said member, a toothed grip block pivotally connected to the member and supported therebeyond, said chain and grip block being extended in the same plane.
Coflel of thll patent may be obtained for 2. In chain tongs, a head, a member detachably secured to the head, and a toothed.
grip block pivotally connected to said member.
3. In chain tongs,'a head, a member detachably secured to the head, said member having arecess, a grip" block, a bearing proj ection on the block and fitted snugly Within the recess, and a pivotal'connection between said projection and the member.
4. In chain tongs, ahead, a sleeve embracing the head and having an opening for the extension of a chain therethrough, and a toothed grip block pivotally connected to the sleeve.
5. In chain tongs, a head, a chain, a sleeve embracing the head end having an opening for the extension of the tongs chain therethrough, means for detachably securing said sleeve to the head, the said sleeve having a recess in one side thereof, a grip block, a bearing projection on the block fitting snugly Within the recess, and a pivotal connection between said projection and the sleeve. 7
6. In chain tongs, a head, a sleeve having separate jaW receiving spaces and mounted on the head, said sleeve having open ends, means Within the sleeve for detachably securing the sleeve to the head, and a curved andtoothed grip block pivotally connected tothe sleeve.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as myoWn, I have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
