ATTORNEY WWW ALLEN NELSON FOUNTAIN, CF ASHTABULA, OHIO.
COAL-CAR COVER.
Application filed November 6, 1915.
To 117/ IF/I01)! it vim con ern Be it known that l. Annex Nnmox Foos- TAIN, a citizen of the nited States. residing atkShLillJlliil. in the county of Ashtabula and State oi Ohio. have invented certain new and useful improvements in Coal-Car Covers. of which the following a specii'i tion.
This invention relates to a, coal car cover which may be locked secureuv over the top of a coal car to prevent theft of the contents thereof. such as often occurs when coal cars are standing; on sidings or in yards.
()ne particular object of the present invention is to provide means. in combination with the coal tar cover. for passage over the. car when the cover is closed which will thus greatly facilitate the wort-zinc" of the train crew.
Another object resides in the arrangement by which the cover may .be opened and closed.
With the abov and other objects in view E vviil now proceed to describe a specific embodiment of the invention as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a coal car equipped with my invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. and Fig. 3 is a detail section view on the line ,-3 ot'Fig. i.
in detail the invention as shown is appiied to the coal car A ha ring the usual ends 1 and and the sides and 4. Upon each side of the car and along the top edge thereof are mounted a plurality of supports 5 which have pivoted thereto at (3 the latticed work cover portions 7. 8. 9 and 10 formed of longitudinally and transversely extending iron strips.
At each end 1 and of the car A are the transversely positioned rods 11 which are left hand threaded at one end, and right hand threaded at the other end so-that the threaded portions meet at substantially the center. The rods ii are supported in bearinc; 12 and may be rotated through the medium of bevel gears 13. carried by said rods and which mesh with bevel gear H carried by a shaft 15 extending: longitudinally of the side 3 of the ca and supported in bear- 16, said 'shatt having. at its center, a bevel gear 17 meshing: with the bevel gear 18 carried by a vertical shaft 19 rotated by Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 6,1916.
Serial No. 60.075.
the crank 20 through the medium of intermeshingz bevel gears .21 and 22.
The portions 8 and 10 of the cover are hinged together at 23 and the hinge projects sutliciently below the normal plane of the cover to ride upon a support 2% and thus the hinged relation between the portions 8 and 10 is kept at such an angle that the said portions are easily broken to raise them upwardly as indicated on the left hand side of Fig. 2. The portions 7 and 9 are similarly hinged at 25. The portions 7 and 10 carry on their adjacent edges the members 26 and 27 for threaded engagement with the proper threads of the rods 11. Also on their adjacent edges these members 7 and 10 are provided with rollers 28 hearing on members 24, thus as the handle 20 is turned to rotate the. rods 11 the latticed Work members com-' prising the cover may be raised to the position shown on the left hand side of Fig. 2 or may be lowered to the position shown on the right hand side of Fig. 2.
Furthermore the adjacent edges of the portions 7 and 10 carry the treads 29 and 30 which, when the cover is closed meet and Form a path thereover which may be used by the t'ain crew in passing over the cars. The ditiiculty of passing over a loaded coal car is well known and the accidents occurring from this source are numerous. However it will be evident that safe passage is provided from a loadedcoal car by means of this invention.
\Vhile l have herein described a specific i form of the invention. it isto he understood that I do not limit myself to such construction except in so far as the invention is defined in the appended claims.
I claim: z
1. In combination with a coal car, a cover therefor including", a' shaft mounted transversely of said car at each end and each shaft having one half provided with left hand threads and the other half with right hand threads. latticed membershinged to the opposite sides of said car at the top and each provided, on their adjacent edges, with, members in threaded engagement with said transverse shafts, and means to rotate said transverse shafts to extend said latticed members over the top of said can 2. In combination \vithra coal car, a cover therefor including a shaft mounteti transversely of said car at each end, and each shaft having one half provided with left hand threads and the other with right hand threads, a plurality of hinged lattieed members secured to opposite sides of said car, a member carried by each latticed member and engaging said transverse shaft for move ment thereby, and means to rotate said transverse shaft to move said member to extend 13 said lattieed 'n ielnbers over the top of said car.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presenee of two witnesses. ALLEN NELSON FOUNTAIN. Witnesses CARL C. PLAIN, HENRY MQKINNIEL.
