Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed February 14, 1914. Serial No. 818,709.
Cleaning Currycombs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in self cleaning curry combs. V
The primary object of the invention is to provide a curry comb of a novel construction and provided with means for automati cally cleaning the teeth of the comb upon the active operation of the device.
A further object of the invention is to provide a curry comb operable in the usual manner but insuring a cleaning of the teeth at the completion of each operation of the comb.
A still further object is to provide a hand support upon the comb for readily retain ing the latter upon the hand of the operator, the same being mounted upon a comb so constructed that a closing movement of the hand acts to clean the teeth of the comb.
With these objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the device mounted upon the operators hand. Fig. 3 is a bottom perspective view of the cleaning plate employed with the device. Fig. 4 is a trans-- verse sectional view of said plate taken sub stantially upon line l4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the comb members detached, and Figs. 6 and 7 are plan views of the two metal blanks forming when folded the hand retaining means of the comb.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, the comb per se, it will be noted is formed of a rectangular plate 10 having longitudinally secured upon the under face thereof, a plurality of comb members 11 arranged in parallelism. It will be seen that in the present illustration three of these comb members are utilized each consisting of a member substantially U-shaped in cross section and with teeth bordering the edges of each of its flanges 12. It is obvious that any desired number of these comb members may be employed. A hand-hold device 13 is mounted transversely upon the upper surface of said plate 10 and comprises the two blanks shown in Figs. 6 and 7, the same being curvedalong the longitudinal axis and adapted to partially telescope with one another as best seen in Fig.1. A rectangular portion 14: of the mainblank 15 is secured to the plate by hold-fastdevices projected through the struck out lips 16, while the irregularend 17 of :said blank is given a double curve as illustrated forming a thimble member adapted for the reception of the thumb of the operator as illustrated in Fig.
2. The smaller blank member 18 shown in Fig. 7 is adapted to be curved over for the reception of the little finger of the operator and is preferably adjustably positioned with respect to the curved portion of the blank 15 for the better accommodation of the operators hand.
A cleaning plate 19 of rectangular configurationand of greater area than the plate 10 is provided with longitudinally extending struck-down flanges 20 forming longitudinal slots 21 between each pair of flanges and so spaced apart that the comb flanges 11 may be longitudinally slidable therein. For retaining the cleaner plate 19 and the main plate 10 in operative relations, the operatively arranged links 22 are pivoted between said plates and adjacent the rear ends thereof. Coil springs 23 are secured to said plates at opposite points adjacent the front ends thereof for resiliently connecting the same and normally holding the comb teeth substantially within the slots 21 which normally places the members in the comb cleaning position. The cleaning plate 19 moves in the lengthwise direction of the comb flanges 11, and to this end the slots 21 are relatively longer than said comb flanges.
. This construction allows of easy and normal Such a movement moreover rocks the links 22 upon their pivots, such readily and sub-- stantially automatically bringing the lowered teeth of the comb up into a position .to be cleaned by the flanges 20 of the slots 21;
It is also obvious that With thehand positioned as shown in Fig. 2, With the finger tips upon the end roll 5250f the plate 19,"
a slight closing movement of the hand operates to so elevate the comb teeth to the cleaning position.
VV'hile the forms ofthe invention herein" shown an didescribed are Whatare believed to be preferable embodiments thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood .1 that" minor changesmay be'madein form; proportion v havingthe flanged edges thereof formed With teeth; a cleaner plate having longitudinallyarrangedpairs of struck-down flanges forming slots to receive said toothed flanges, and'said' struck-down flanges adapted to having scraping engagement With said toothed flanges; said slots being relatively longer than: the toothed flanges and the cleaner plate being movable in the length- Wise direction of saidtooth'ed flanges; a pair of swinging links'located at opposite sides of andpivotally connecting said main and cleaner plates adjacent one end thereof; a pair-of spring members located at opposite sides of and ptvotaHy connecting said plates adjacent'therother end thereof and a handle mounted on the upper face of said main plate, substantially-asdescribed.
