PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE E. HOPKIN, OF BHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN COOKING-STOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,534, dated August 29, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. HOPKIN, of the city of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain improvements in the application of hot-Water tanks to stoves, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to the application to the top plate of a cooking-stove of a water-heating tank, in such ahnanner that the hot products of combustion which usually escape from the stove to the chimney will be compelled to pass in contact with the whole surface of the bottom and one side of the tank before they reach the chimney; and this I accomplish by the attachment of an open case provided with partitions, an opening in its bottom for the insertion of the outside flanch of the exit-flue of the stove, and a flanched opening in the top of the case for the usual chimney-pipe, in such a manner that when the .watertank is applied to the said open case the usual hot waste products of combustion will pass in contact with the bottom and one side of the tank, as before stated 5 the object of my invention being the production of a water-tank, applicable to any of the cooking-stoves in use, that will be heated in the manner stated by the usual waste heat'on its passage to the chimney.
Figure 1 is a perspective view ofthe open case for receiving the Water-tank, the front plate at the bottom being removed. Fig. 2 is an'end elf evation of the open case with the Water-tank applied thereto.
The open case A is closed at its top and bottom, and partly at its ends and front, so as to leave an open space in front for the reception of an oblong rectangular Water-tank, B, which Will accurately t and close the said open space. (See Fig. 2.) The interior of the caseAis divided by two vertical partitions, a a, and one horizontal partition, a", which connects with the extreme upper ends of the vertical partitions a a, all in such a manner that when the tankl B is applied the case Will be divided into a middle flue, 4, communicating with two end ilues, 5 5, and a horizontal flue, 6, above the middle ue. The middle of the rear side of the case has a semicircular projection, 7, in the plate for the twofold purpose of affording room for an opening, 8, in
It will be understood, without further descrip A tion, that the case A, with its water-tank B applied as in Fig. 2, is to be placed on the back part of the top plate of the stove, and the 'case bolted or otherwise securely fastened and supported upon the plate, with the lanched end of the exit-flue of the stove inserted in the hole 8, the dotted lines V W, Fig. 2, indicating, respectively, the back and top plates of the stove. It will also be understood that the draught through the iues in the case A will be substantially in the direction indicated by the arrows shown in Fig. l, and that the whole outward surface ot the bottom and one side of the water-tank B will be exposed to the heat of the draught, and the Water of the tank kept proportionately heated.
I claim as my invention- The construction and arrangement of the case A and the water-tank B in relation to each other and to any suitable stove, whereby the escapeue draught on its way to the chimney passes outside ofthe tank B and in direct contact with the whole surface of the bottom and one side of the same, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth and described.
GEORGE E. HOPKIN.
