To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, NICHOLAS IV. AN- TnoNY,-:a citizenof the United 'States,; and resident of. New York, countyiandwState of New York, have invented certain newv and useful Improvements in Burners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to burners and more particularly toimprovements in the details of construction of the type of burner-illustrated and broadly claimed in my earlier application No. 148,904: filed September 3, 1915.
It: is the object of the present invention to providea burner of the type described in my aforesaid earlier application which will be comparatively simple in construction and adaptedto supply the requisite amounts of air on the interior and exterior of the'ring of fuel spray so as to have a maximum effr ciency of combustion and produce anannular flame.

Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through a burner embodying. my improvements; Fig. 2 is an elevation of the front end of the same; and Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 10 indicates the burner casing which is supplied with air through the connection 11. The casing is preferably provided with a removable plug 12 in its rear wall in which there is arranged the fuel pipe 13 which is arranged substantially at the center of the casing and extends to a point near the front end thereof. A conical head 14 is secured to the forward end of the pipe 13 and provided with a cen tral recess 15 and a series of recesses 16 arranged in a circle about the recess 15. Ports 17 extend from the recess 15 rearwardly through the head 14: to convey air from the interior of the casing to the recess15 whence it is discharged in the manner hereinafter described. The recesses 16 are separately connected with the interior of the fuel supply pipe 13 by ports 18 so that each of these recesses willreceive a supply of fuel directly from the pipe 13.
In each of the recesses 16 there is secured a nozzle or nebulizer 19, preferably adapted to break up the fuel into a fine spray which is discharged through the central opening 20. It will be understood that the spray discharged from each of the nozzles 19 is in the Specification of Letters Patent.

form-.of'a cone and the series of nozzles, be ing arranged in a circle, will produce a ring of fuel spray. Each of the nozzles 19 may be provided with recesses 21 in the front surface thereof to receive a spanner wrench for thepurpose of securing the nozzlesin the recesses 16.
A deflector. 22 is secured to the head 14:, in alinement with the recess 15 by a screw threaded connection 23 so that the deflector may be adjusted to any desired position. A lock nut 24 may be provided for securing the deflector 22 in any position to which it is adjusted. The deflector 22 is preferably in the form of an outwardly flaring cone which will beadapted to direct the current of air from the recess 15, substantially at right angles to and against the inner side of the ring of fuel spray from the nozzles 19. The air from the recess 15, being formed into an annular current by the deflector 22 and strikingthe ring of fuel spray substantially at right angles, will thoroughly mingle with the particles of fuel so that all portions adjacent the inner side of the ring of spray will receive the requisite amount of air to burn the fuel with the maximum efiiciency.
A cap 25 is. secured on the exterior of .the casing 10 by the screw threads 26 and is provided with an inturned conical flange 27 which cooperates with the head 14 to de flect the air current, which is discharged around the head 14, substantially at right angles to and against the outer side of the ring of fuel spray. In his way the portions of the fuel adjacent the outer side of the spray will receive the requisite amount of air for the maxiuum efficiency of combustion and therefore the flange 27 cooperates with the deflector 22 to provide on the exterior and interior of the ring of spray the necessary amount of air and to also, due to the force of the air currents, produce a perfectly formed annular flame.
The burner above described is particu larly designed to be supplied with low pressure air and the arrangement of the nozzles 19 and the supply of air to the inner and outer sides of the ring of spray gives to the burner a large heat generating capacity.
lVhile the form of the invention illustrated in the drawings is a specific embodiment of the invention described and claimed in my aforesaid earlier application, it will be understood that the improvements herein claimed may be embodied in burners differing in minor details from that illustrated and therefore it will be understood that the V invention is not limited to the exact details I and provided with a plurality of ports, communicating with'the interior of the pipe,
and a central air opening, a series of nozzles arranged in a circle about said opening and adapted to cooperate to produce a ring of fuel spray, each nozzle being separately supplied by one of said-ports, a deflector adjustably'connected with said head and adapted to form the air passing through said opening into an annular current and direct the same against said ring of fuel spray,
and means for directing a current from around said head against the outer side of Saidring ofspray. V 5 v r ,2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a casing, an air connection thereon, a fuel supply pipe in thecasing, a conical head on said pipe provided with a V eentral'recess and'a" series of recesses arranged in a circle about the central recess, said head having one or more ports extending to the rear thereof from said centralrecess for supplying air to the latter and 'Gopiesof this patent may be obtained for ports separately connecting each of the recesses of said series with said pipe, spraying nozzles'secur'ed in said series of recesses and cooperating to form a ring of fuel spray, a deflector arranged in said central recess and adapted to direct the air therefrom in the form of an annular current against theinner side of said ring of spray,
and means for directing a current of alr from around said head against the outer side of said ring of spray.
8. In a device of the class described, the combination of a casing, an air connection thereon, a fuel supply pipe extending centrally through the casing, a conical head on the end of said pipe provided with a central recess and one or more openings extending rearwardly from said recess, and a series of recesses arranged in a circle about the central recess, said head having ports separately connecting each of the recesses of said series with said pipe, spraying nozzles secured in said series of recesses and coiiperating to form a ring of fuel spray, an ud ustable deflector arrangedin alinement with said central recess and adapted to direct the air therefrom in the form of an annular current against the inner side of said ring of spray, and a conical cap adjustably secured on said casing and adapted to cooperate with said head to direct the air discharged around the latter against the outer side of said ring of spray.
