Description

@WWU/M0,
No. 118,473. Patented Augfzg, 1371.
UNITED STATES PATENT CFFIC'E.
HERMON NELSEN, OF JEROME, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN PADLOCKS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,473, dated August 29, 1871; antedated August 23, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMON NELSEN, of Je rome, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Padlocks; and the following is declared to be a correct description thereof.
Padlocks have been made with a circular case having flanges, between which the joint-pin of the shackle is introduced, and knobs for stationary locks have been made with the key-hole in the centre of the knob.
My invention is made for facilitating the construction of the padlock. Turned work is cheaper than work performed by planing, or cutting, or by hand, and the work can be very handsome. I make use of a lock-case formed of a short cylinder containing a central stud for the key, a stud for swinging tumblers, and openings for the shackle, combined with a cap-plate having a central key-hole and a projecting stud for the shackle to swing upon, the parts being put together and the cap retained by closing the edge ofthe cylindrical case around it.
In the drawing, Figure l is an elevation of the lock with the cap removed. Fig. 2 is a section at the line wm and Fig. 3 shows the inner side of the cap-plate.
The case of the lock is made of the back a and cylindrical edges b, cast together and provided with a central key-stud, c, and stud d, for the swinging' hook-tumblers e, and in the edge of the 4case are mortises for the ends of the shackle j' to be introduced. rlhe cap-plate g is circular and of a size to set within a recess in the cylindrical portion b of the case, and the edges of the capplate g are beveled, so that said plate will be v very firmly retained by closing the edge of the portion b around the same. This cap-plate ghas projecting from its inner side the stud t', upon which the shackle swings, and the end of this stud t' passes into a socket at the back a within the case, so as to be firmly supported at both ends. The stud d for the tumblers is supported at its outer end by entering a recess in the back ofthe cap-plate g. In this manner the case is very strong and the parts can all be nished very handsomely and at a small cost, and riveting and hand-work usual in looks of this class are dispensed with to a large extent. The key-hole k in the center of the cap g receives the key, and a spring-cover should be provided for the same.
- I have shown said cover as circular and attached by a stud, r, to which a spring is applied to turn the cover into place, and a stop-pin, s, in a segmental slot, limits the movement of the key-hole cover. The shackle f should be made with a spring, 0, for throwing the shackle up when unlocked.
I claim as my invention- The circular cover g, with a stud, i, projecting from the inner side for the shackle fand entering a recess in the case, in combination with the circular case a b, that is made with openings for the shackle and with a recess for receiving the edges of the cover g and securing the same, as'
set forth.
Signed this 10th day of December, A. D. 1870.
' HERMON NELSEN.
