Description

M. V. CROWNER.
FRUIT GATHEREB.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. 26 1915.
F/G. a.
Elma/MM M. V firawher I wirbmeooeu Patented May 23,1915f a re naarnn UFFIUM FRUIT-GATHERER.
Application filed November 26, 1915.
To all whom it may concern? Be it known that I, MARTIN V. CRowNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fennville, in the county of Allegan and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fruit-Gatherers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fruit gatherers, and has for its object the provision of a receptacle, together with means for supporting the receptacle upon the hand of the user in a position wherein the fruit can be readily deposited as soon as picked, without injury to the fruit,-and at the same time permitting a large quantity of fruit to be picked in very short order.
In carrying out my invention I aim to provide a means for supporting the receptacle from the wrist and little finger of the hand of the user, the construction of the supporting means being such to permit the receptacle to be quickly and easily associated with or removed from the hand when desired.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood from the following description when read in connection with the accompanying drawing, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts defined in the appended claims.
In the drawing forming part of this specification, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views and wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the receptacle applied upon the hand and wrist of the user. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the receptacle removed.
As hereinabove stated the device forming the subject matter of my invention is in the nature of a fruit gatherer, primarily intended for receiving small fruit such as cherries, berries or the like, and consists of a receptacle 5 which may be constructed from any suitable material and desired formation. As shown in this specific instance I employ a wire mesh basket of cylindrical contour provided with a reinforcing band or ring encircling the upper edge of the basket.
The ring is formed to provide a pair of spaced loops 7 rising from the upper edge of the receptacle at right angles thereto. The terminals of the reinforcing band are intertwisted as at 8 and extend laterally beyond the plane of the receptacle an appre- Specification of Letters Patent.

ciable distance as shown. Each of the terminals are then extended upwardly and formed to provide companion wrist engaging members or loops 10 and 11 respectively, which are held associated with each other in any suitable manner, in spaced confronting relation to facilitate the insertion between said loops or the removal therefrom, the wrist of the user of the device in the manner clearly illustrated in Fig. 1. Carried by the upper end of the wrist engaging loop 10 1s a strap 13 provided with a buckle 14 of usual construction, said strap being adapted to be passed within the loop 11 and adjustably connected with said buckle for the purpose of firmly holding said wrist engaging members 10 and 11 operatively associated about the wrist of the user. While passing the wrist between the members 10 and 11 respectively, the little finger is passed within the loops 7 whereby the receptacle is supported upon the hand while adjusting the strap 13 about the wrist for the purpose hereinafter stated. Furthermore the provision of the loops 7 permits the receptacle to be also supported from the little finger of the hand thereby relieving the wrist and wrist engaging members 10 and 11 respectively of undue strain under the weight of the receptacle. It will be also noted upon inspection of Fig. 1 that the user of the device has the freedom of movement of the fingers and thumb of the hand upon which the article is supported, thereby permitting the use of both hands for the purpose of removing the fruit. The device is extremely simple in construction, and it is therefore believed that the nature and advantages of the invention will be thoroughly understood from the foregoing description.
It is to be understood that the article disclosed is hereinabove merely illustrative of one embodiment of the invention, and I do not limit myself to the construction and arrangement of parts shown and described, as various changes in this respect may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is 1- 1. A device of the class described comprising a basket and wrist engaging means rigidly attached thereto for supporting said basket immediately beneath the hand of the user of the device.
2. A device of the class described comprising a basket, a Wrist engaging means rigidly attached thereto for supporting said basket immediately beneath the hand of the 1 user, and rigid finger receiving loops rising y from the upper edge of the basket in parallelism with said Wrist engaging means.
A device of the class described comprising a basket, companion Wrist'engag'ing members disposed at oneside of the basket and rigidly connected thereto, and a strap carried by one of said members and adapted to be adjustably associated with the other of said members for the purpose described.
4. A device of the class described com- (logic; or this pa'tent m be obtained 1'o'r from the upper edge thereof, said parts projecting above the receptacle and disposed in confronting relation, and means for holding said parts operatively associated about the Wrist. 6. A device of the class described comprising a Wire mesh basket, the material forming the basket being extended and formed to provide finger engaging loops rising from the upper edge of the basket and disposed at right angles with relation to saidedge, said material being further extended laterally from said upper edge to provide an intertwisted shank, and continued to provide companion Wrist engaging members rising from the outer extremity of said shank and disposed in parallelism with respect to said loops, and means for holding said members operatively associated about the Wrist.
In testimony whereof I, aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
