To all whom #may concern.'
Be it lknown that I, Manco G. ZoNGARo, `a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State -of Oregon, have `invented certain new and useful Improvements in Double-Link Guards; and I 'do declare the following vto be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such las will enable others skilled in the art `to which it appertains to make and luse the same.
This invention relates to improvements in open rings or links and more particularly to the closures therefor, and which are -known as double llink guards.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which `is especially designed for use in logging campsfor attach- -in'gcables employed for use onvfallen trees and which is so constructed that the cable may -vbe iattached to both members thereof avoided.
With these and otherobjects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, and ythe combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: `-Figmre 1 `represents a side elevation -of a link guard constructed in accordance with this invention with the ends of the lcable secured to the hooks of the link; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section; Fig. 3 `is a transverse section taken on the 4line 3 3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 isa similar view taken on the line H of Fig. 2. In the embodiment illustrated an oblong 'link 1 :is shown having an opening in one side `member thereof, thusv `forming `hook shaped ends 2 and 3, the bills 4 of which extend towardeach other andare arranged in rlongitudinal ialinenient, said bills being provided in their free terminals with sockets 5 for a purpose to be described. A closure 10 for these hooks 2 and 3 is shown pivotally mounted on the side bar of the link at a point oppositethe space between the bills 4 of the hooks 2 and 3 and which is designed to span the space between the bases and the bills of the hooks, the bases G of said hooks being joined by a reduced neck 7 having shoulders at its opposite ends which serve as stops for limiting the longitudinal movement of the closure which is pivotally mounted on said neck. This closure 10 is shown in the form of a hollow casing having a tubular bearing member 11 at one end thereof. of a size designed to encircle `and freceive the neck 7 which joins the bases of the hooks 2 and 3 of the link. Projecting from this tubular member 11 is the hollow casing 12, the side walls of which are spaced apart a distance substantially equal to the thickness of the bases of the hooks and tapers toward its free end which is `designed to fit between the bills 4 of the hooks 2 and 3, said casing being of a Width corresponding to the distance between the bills 4 of said hooks 2 and 3. Disposed within the casing 12 is a substantially U- shaped spring 13, the cross bar of which is 4provided with a plurality of laterally extending loops 14, five being here shown, two extending in `one direction and three in the opposite direction, the central loop being secured to the end wall of the free end of the casing by a rivet or other suitable means. This U-shaped spring is'of a size to fit within the casing 12 with the arms 15 thereof arranged in close proximity to and parallel with the side edges of said casing, said arms being provided at their free ends with outwardly projecting laterally extending studs 16 which pass through apertures 17 in the edge walls of the casing 12 adjacent the free outer end thereof and which are so `positioned 'that when the closure is operatively disposed these studs will enter the sockets 5 in the terminals of the bills 4 and thereby reliably hold the closure in position and form two complete members for the link, said closure dividing said link transversely.
Two push buttons or `headed `pins 18 are mounted to slide laterally in the edge walls of the casing 12 with their inner ends positioned to engage the outer faces of the arms 15 ofthe springv 13 so that when these pins are compressed toward each other these arms 15 are similarly compressed, thereby forcing the studs 1G carried thereby inward and thus releasing them from the sockets 5 of the hook bills.
From the above description it will be obvious that should this link be employed for connecting the ends of a cable C which are tied or otherwise engaged with the hooks 2 and 3, that on the closing of the closure 10, said ends will be held entirely separated in spaced relation and will exert their pulling action on the curved portion of the hooks which have a similar resistance to breakage, and it will thus not interfere with the operation of the closure in any way. When it is desired to disconnect these cable ends or any other articles with which the link has been attached, it may be readily accomplished by simply pressing together the pins or push buttons 18 at opposite edges of the closure and thus simultaneously disengage the studs 16 from the sockets 5 in the hook bills and thus Vpermit the closure to swing laterally into open position and the hooks 2 andB to be readily disengaged from the article or articles with which they were connected.
While this link is shown and described for use in connection with a cable, it is obvious that it may be employed for many other different purposes, the gist of the invention residing in the peculiar means for closing the link and forming a double guard therefor.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination of a link having' hook-shaped ends with the bills of said hooks arranged in alinement and spaced apart, a closure for said hooks pivotally mounted on the link at a point opposite the space between the bills thereof, said closure spanning the space between said hook bills and the bases thereof and corresponding in width to the distance between said bills, the terminals of said bills having sockets therein and said closure having spring pressed studs positioned to enter said sockets when the closure is in operative position, and means for simultaneously releasing said studs.
2. The combination of a link having hook-shaped ends with the bills of said hooks arranged in alinement and spaced apart, a closure for said hooks pivotally mounted on the link at a point opposite the space between the bills thereof, said closure spanning the space between said bills, the terminals of said bills having sockets therein, said closure being hollow and having a substantially U-shaped spring mounted therein with its arms posit ioned at the side edges of the closure, studs carried by the free ends of said arms and extending outwardly in opposite directions through the edges of said closure in position to enter the sockets of said bills, and means for compressing said arms to release said studs.
3. The combination of a link having hook-shaped ends with the bills of said hooks arranged in alinement and spaced apart, a closure for said hooks pivotally mounted on the link at a point opposite the space between'the bills thereof, said closure spanning the space between said hook bills and the bases thereof and corresponding in width to the distance between said bills, the terminals of said bills having sockets therein, said closure being hollow and having a substantially U-shaped spring mounted therein with its arms positioned at the side edges of the closure, studs carried by the free ends of said arms and extending outwardly in opposite directions through the edges ofsaid closure in position to enter the sockets of said bills, and pins slidable in the edge walls of said closure and positioned to engage said arms for compressin them to release said studs.
4f. The combination of a link having hook-shaped ends with the bills of said hooks arranged in alinement and spaced apart, a closure for said hooks pivotally mounted on the link at a point yopposite the spacebetween the bills thereof, said closure spanning the space between said hook bills and the bases thereof and corresponding in width to the distance between said bills, the terminals of said bills having sockets therein said closures being hollow and having a substantially U-shaped spring mounted therein with its arms positioned at the side edges of the closure, studs carried by the free ends of said arms and extending outwardly in opposite directions through the edges of said closure in position to enter the sockets of said bills, the cross bar ofV said spring being provided with a plurality of laterally extending loops to increase the resiliency of said arms, and means for com- Y pressing said arms to release said studs.
5.
