REGISTERING DEVICE FOR TELEPHONE SYSTEMS.
Specification of Letters Patent.v
Patented May 16, 1916.
Application filed April 3, 1913. Serial No. 758,721.
'To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIJAH M. NORTHUM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Stephens, in the county of Ouachita and State of Arkansas, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Registerlng Devices for Telephone. Systems, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to registering devices for telephone systems, and it consists in the combinations, constructions, and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide an improved device overthat shown in a prior Patent #1,018,981, Feb. 27, 1912, these improvements consisting mainly in simplifying the construction of the deviceand 1n the provision of means for registering the number of disks deposited in the registering device.
A further object of the invention is to facilitate the posting of books and the checking up of telephone calls, especially those calls received on toll lines.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification and the novel features of the device will .be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming part of this application in which similar reference characters indicate like parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a face view of the device, the outer cover portion being removed and a portion of the lower part being broken away, Fig. 2 is a face View of the upper part of the device, and Fig. 3 is a section along the line 33 of Fig. 1.
In carrying out my invention I provide a rectangular box or casing 1. This box is provided with a cover portion 2 which may be screwed to the body portion 1 or secured to it in any other suitable manner. The cover is provided with a pair of openings 2* and 2 and a pair of slots 2 and 2. On each side of the slots are arranged guide lugs 3, these guide lugs being preferably wooden strips which are secured to and form an integral part of the cover.
Secured to the back of the body portion 1 is a base block 4 upon the edge of which are disposed a pair of number registering devices such as those shown at 5 in Fig. 1.
These registering devices may be of any suitable type. I Those illustrated in the drawing are of the well known cyclometer type. To the operatingv lever 5- of each cyclometer-is secured an arm 6 which extends downwardly in front of one of the slots 2 and 2 The dial 5 of the cyclometer is arranged to'register with the openings 2 and 2 so-that the numerals of the dial may be read fromthe front of'th'e registering device. r
Secured to the rear of the body portion 1 is a telephone transmitter T which is preferably of the watch case type. The block 4 forms a means for suspending the lead wires 7 of the transmitter, a screw 8 being provided for that purpose. I The lead wires pass out through an opening l in the back. Chutes 9 and 9 extend from the slots 2 and 2 respectively downwardly and terminate above a bell 10 which is disposed in an opening 11 of a central partition 11 which extends to the bottom of the casing 1.
In the bottom of the casing on each side of the partition 11 are disposed a pair of drawers such as those shown at 12 and 12". These drawers are provided with locks 13 and 13 They are open at their tops as shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device the operation thereof may be readily understood.
As stated before this device is primarily designed for assisting in the proper'registering of telephone calls. Let us suppose that the device is installed at a central station and that a call comes in from a substation. WVhen the call comes in the operator makes out the regular ticket and then writes on one of the disks 15 the name of the party, the number of the phone, and the date. The disks are preferably made of aluminum, so that the record can be erased. Connection being made with the party wanted the disk is pressed into one of the slots 2 or 2. This will force the arm 6 of the counting mechanism downwardly thereby registering the insertion of the disk.
When the latter falls over the arm it will return to its original position. The disk falls down the chute 9 or 9 and strikes the bell and the sound of the bell is heard by the operator at the end of the line or by the monitor thus affording an additional check that the call has been registered. The disk passes into one of the boxes at the bottom. The above described operation is repeated every time a call comes in. The number of disks in the drawer must correspond with the number indicated on the number registering mechanism 5. There are therefore three registrations besides the sound of the bell.
wardly :t'rom the bottom of the casing and terminating short of the guide means, said central partition having an opening disposed below the top of the partition, a bell disposed in said opening, the central portion of the bell being in alinement with said partition and the outer edge of the bell extending on opposite sides of the partition, underneath said guide means.
2. In a registering device for telephone systems, a casing having a pair of slots near its upper end arranged to receive disks, guide chutes disposed inside the casing for guiding the disks downwardly, a central partition within said casing extending up- Wardlv from the bottom of the casing and terminating short of the guide chutes, said central partition having an opening disposed below the top of the partition, a bell disposed in said opening, the central portion of the bell being in alinement with said partition, and the outer edge of the bell extending on opposite sides of the partition, underneath said guide chutes, and receptacles disposed beneath the bell on each side of said central partition.
