FRED H. LYSONS, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
. BABY-HAMMOGK.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRED H. LYsoNs, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Baby-Hammocks, of which the following is specification.
A My invention'relates to hammock beds or cots intended more particularly forthe use of babies, and also particularly intended for use upon automobiles.
The object of my invention is to provide a means whereby a child may be comfortably and safely carried upon an automobile without the necessity'of having to hold the child in somebodys arms or on a lap, and a means which :will also furnish effective protection against] winds and the sun.
It is a further object to so construct device of thischaracter that it may; be,col-
lapsed orfolded into a not'in use. I I
My invention comprises the novel parts and combinations which will be hereinafter described and particularly defined-in the claims. 1
In the drawingsI have shown my invention in the form of construction which "is now most preferred by me.
Figure 1 is a perspective showing the device in position for use and secured as it would be" when'used upon an'automobile. Fig. 2 is a cross sectionalelevation' of the device in open position. Fig. 3 'isa similar view showing the outer edge reduced so as to narrow the surface upon which the baby 'is to be placed. 4 shows the position of. the device when folded. Fig. 5 is. a detail showing theconstruction of thehook by which it is suspendedupon the robe rail of an automobile. Fig. 6 is a cross sectional detail showing the manner of SGCUI'lIlg. the
stifleningbar which is at the back edge of the device, and F 1g. 1s a detall'showlng the manner of connecting the stiffening bar of the canopy with its supporting bar.
This device employs a bottom or Supporting section 1., a back or side wall section 2 and a canopy or cover section 3, these being formed as a continuous part of the same sheet of fabric; )In addition to'this 1 prefer to use a depending flap which'more Specification of Letters Patent.

and end sections '5 which connect the bottom Patented May 9, 1916. 7 Application filed July 22, 1915. Serial No. 41,242.
and top sections. At the open or front edge.
of the bed section a stiffening rail 10 is secured. At the opposite or backsection a -stiffening bar 6 is incorporated in and secured to the fabric at'the point ofjoining of the bottom and'backsections 1 and 2. I I
A stifie'ning bar 61 is also placed at the point of joining of the backsection and the top or canopysectio'nii. "In the preferred form of construction, these latter two stiffening bars are formed of an integral piece of heavy wire bent into shape, the ends being joined by the vertical sections and the center, or as many intermediate points as may be desired, by transverse portions 62.
As herein shown the portion 62 constitutes the ends of the bar, these being twisted at 63a sufli'cient amount to insuretheir being held in proper-relation and having their tips bent about thelower bar 6 so as to form eyes 64:. The ends may then be eXtended'to ward the back'and bent into shapeto form a hook 65whi'ch is adapted to be pla d Over the robe-rail 9. a I
Near each end of the lower bar 6 ofthis frame the wire is doubled upon itself and bent intoshape to form a hook 61 the shape of which isclearly shown in FigsBand 5.
'At the point where this hook joins the bottombar 6,the wires are also preferably twisted enough to hold the two parts ,se-, These hooks are provided with a curve 67 which embraces the roberail 9,*when the device is in use. Theyare also provided near their tips with a curve 68 which embraces the robe rail when the device is folded, as has'beenshown in Fig. l. The lower bar 6 of the back frame is preferably secured tothe fabric sheet by being inserted'within sections 12 of fabric which are stitched to the bottom 1. The
central hook 65' does not have the extension '68, as it 1s designed for use in securing the parts in folded position.
The stiffening bar 7, which is placed'at theupperand forward edge of the, top 3, islpreferably a stiff wire, which has an eye 70 formed in its ends, into which is secured :a-ney'e'72 of the supporting-bar 71. This bar7lgis a. piece of sim'ilarwire which has its lower end off-set in any suitable manner,
cation of the hole 74: in the bottom piece,
should be between the back edge of the bottom and a point immediately under the bar 7.
The end pieces 5 are secured to the bottom 1 from the rear of the latter to a point 51, which is somewhat back from the forward edge of the bottom. The outer lower corner of the flap 5 is provided, at 52, with one part of a securing means as, for instance, spring buttons or fasteners, the other part of which is secured to the bottom 1, so that it may be secured at this point, or left free, as is shown at the left hand end of Fig. 1. Additional securing. means may be provided if desired, as has been shown in the loose flap of Fig. l.
The depending curtain 1 is not fixedly secured to the end sections 5, but is provided with securing members 40 of any suitable character analogous to those described at 52, whereby itslower corners may be secured to the. end sections 5. p
The stiffening bar 10, at the forward or outer edge of the bottom, has straps, or other analogous members8, secured thereto, whereby it may be connected with any convenient and suitable'part of the automo bile for support. Short straps 11 are also provided, which are secured at one end to the bottom 1, but have a sectioncorrespond, ing with the width from the point 51 to th bar 10, which are not secured to the bottom. The buckle 13 is secured to the bar 10, whereby the width of the bottom may be adjusted by tightening these belts,thus-forming the fold 14, as has been shown in Fig. 3.
I prefer to provide pockets at the under side of the bottom section 1, the same being formed by stitching the edges of a piece of fabric 16 to the bottom along three sides,
' this being done in such a way that the pocket will depend somewhat. The ends of the pocket may be secured with hooks and eyes, spring fasteners or any other suitablemeans. I have herein shown three such pockets, two
' of which extend, one from each end lengthwise the device and the other extends from the front or outer edge transverse thereof. The number and position of these pockets may be varied at will.
hen not in use, the device may be folded and then placed so that the hooks 68v engage the robe-rail 9, from which it willthen depend in the manner shown in Fig. 4. The outer edge ofthe bottom should preferably be formed with an eyelet, so placed that it may be hooked over the central hook 65, as has, been indicated in Fig. 4.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secureby Letters Patent of the United States of Amer- 10a, is:-
' 1. In a device of the character described, a supporting sheet, a stiffening frame secured along one side of the sheet and having means for. engagement with a supporting memberand also having a canopy supporting member, a canopy, a stiffening bar engaging the outer edge of the canopy, and supporting posts supporting the ends of said bar from the said sheet.
I 2. hammock bed comprising a bottomor supporting sheet, a canopy comprising a side edge and a top extending from the upper edge of said wall, a bar secured along the outer or free. edge of the top and sup porting posts pivotally connected; with the V ends of said bar and adapted to be supported by the bottom.
4. A hammock bed comprising a bottom provided with means for supporting engagement along opposite side edges, a wall section secured. along one side edge, a supporting frame secured to said wall section,
atop secured to the. upper edge ofsaid wall section, a bar secured along the outer edge of the top section, supporting bars hingedly connected with the ends of said bar and adapted to engage. and be supported from the bottom, and end sections connected with the bottom, back and top. sections.
5. A hammock bed' comprising a bottom provided with means for supporting engagement along opposite side. edges, a Wall section secured along oneside edge, a supporting frame secured to said wall, section, a top secured to the upper edge of said wall section, a bar secured along the outer edge vof the top section, supporting barshingedly connected. with the ends of said bar and adapted to engage and be supported from.
the bottom, end sections connected with the bottom, back and top sections, and a flap depending from the outer side edge of the top section.
6. A hammock bedcomprising bottom, side wall and, top sections, a frame secured to the side wall and acting to maintain it extended, said frame having hooks projecting therefrom for supporting engagement With a fixed member, means for supporting with a fixed member, and means for supthe opposite edge of the bottom, and a 001- 10 porting the opposite edge of the bottom. lapsible frame supporting the outer edge of 7 A hammock bed comprising bottom, the top from the bottom. side Wall and top sections, a frame secured Signed atSeattle, Washington, this 14th to the side Wall and acting to maintain it day of July, 1915. extended, said frame having hooks project- 7 ing therefrom for supporting engagement FRED H.
